Single Top Quark Production At The Fermilab Tevatron: Threshold Resummation And Finite-Order Soft Gluon Corrections, Nikolaos Kidonakis

Faculty and Research Publications

I present a calculation of threshold soft-gluon corrections to single top-quark production in p(p) collisions via all partonic processes in the t and s channels and via associated top quark and W boson production. The soft-gluon corrections are formally resummed to all orders, and finite-order expansions of the resummed cross section are calculated through next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNNLO) at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy. Numerical results for single top-quark production at the Tevatron are presented, including the dependence of the cross sections on the top-quark mass and on the factorization and renormalization scales. The threshold corrections in the t channel are small while …

Emergence Of The Fuzzy Horizon Through Gravitational Collapse, Anand Murugan '07, Vatche Sahakian Nov 2006

Emergence Of The Fuzzy Horizon Through Gravitational Collapse, Anand Murugan '07, Vatche Sahakian

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

For a large enough Schwarzschild black hole, the horizon is a region of space where gravitational forces are weak; yet it is also a region leading to numerous puzzles connected to stringy physics. In this work, we analyze the process of gravitational collapse and black hole formation in the context of light-cone M-theory. We find that, as a shell of matter contracts and is about to reveal a black hole horizon, it undergoes a thermodynamic phase transition. This involves the binding of D0 branes into D2’s, and the new phase leads to large membranes of the size of the horizon. …

A Measurement Of The Top Quark Mass With A Matrix Element Method, Adam Paul Gibson '96 Oct 2006

A Measurement Of The Top Quark Mass With A Matrix Element Method, Adam Paul Gibson '96

Doctoral Dissertations

We present a measurement of the mass of the top quark. Our event sample is selected from proton-antiproton collisions, at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy, observed with the CDF detector at Fermilab's Tevatron. We consider a 318 pb-1 dataset collected between March 2002 and August 2004. We select events that contain one energetic lepton, large missing transverse energy, exactly four energetic jets, and at least one displaced vertex b tag. Our analysis uses leading-order tt and background matrix elements along with parameterized parton showering to construct event-by-event likelihoods as a function of top quark mass. From the 63 events observed …

Running Coupling Constant And Transition From Low To High Energies In Quantum Chromodynamics, Alexander Babansky Apr 2006

Running Coupling Constant And Transition From Low To High Energies In Quantum Chromodynamics, Alexander Babansky

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The remarkable feature of QCD is that the coupling constant (the strength of the interaction) depends on the energy of the interacting particles. At high energies, the coupling constant vanishes and QCD becomes asymptotically free. However, at lower energy, the running coupling constant increases, leading to the confining strong-coupling theory at energies of the order of hadron masses. We study the essential effects of the running coupling constant and analyze the transition from high to low energies in different processes.

Next-To-Next-To-Next-To-Leading-Order Soft-Gluon Corrections In Hard-Scattering Processes Near Threshold, Nikolaos Kidonakis Feb 2006

Next-To-Next-To-Next-To-Leading-Order Soft-Gluon Corrections In Hard-Scattering Processes Near Threshold, Nikolaos Kidonakis

Faculty and Research Publications

I present a unified calculation of soft-gluon corrections to hard-scattering cross sections through next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (NNNLO). Master formulas are derived, from a threshold resummation formalism, that can be applied to total and differential cross sections for hard-scattering processes in hadron colliders. I also present numerical results for charged Higgs production at the LHC where these corrections are large, and for top quark production at the Tevatron where these corrections greatly reduce the scale dependence of the cross section.

W-Boson Production With Large Transverse Momentum At The Lhc, Nikolaos Kidonakis, Richard J. Gonsalves, Agustin Sabio Vera Jan 2006

W-Boson Production With Large Transverse Momentum At The Lhc, Nikolaos Kidonakis, Richard J. Gonsalves, Agustin Sabio Vera

Faculty and Research Publications

We study W-boson production with large transverse momentum, QT, in pp collisions at the LHC. We calculate the complete NLO corrections and the soft-gluon NNLO corrections to the differential cross section. The NLO corrections are large but they do not reduce the scale dependence relative to LO, while the NNLO soft-gluon corrections, although small, significantly reduce the scale dependence and thus provide a more stable result.

We report the most precise measurement to date of a parity-violating asymmetry in elastic electron–proton scattering. The measurement was carried out with a beam energy of 3.03 GeV and a scattering angle (θlab) = 6.0○ , with the result A PV = ( − 1.14 ± 0.24 ( stat ) ± 0.06 ( syst ) ) × 10−6 . From this we extract, at Q2 = 0.099 GeV2 , the strange form factor combination GsE + 0.080 GsM = 0.030 ± 0.025 ( stat ) ± 0.006 ( syst ) ± …

Hairy Strings, Vatche Sahakian Jan 2006

Hairy Strings, Vatche Sahakian

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Zero modes of the world-sheet spinors of a closed string can source higher order moments of the bulk supergravity fields. In this work, we analyze various configurations of closed strings focusing on the imprints of the quantized spinor vacuum expectation values onto the tails of bulk fields. We identify supersymmetric arrangements for which all multipole charges vanish; while for others, we find that one is left with Neveu-Schwarz–Neveu-Schwarz, and Ramond-Ramond dipole and quadrupole moments. Our analysis is exhaustive with respect to all the bosonic fields of the bulk and to all higher order moments. We comment on the relevance of …

We report results for the virtual photon asymmetry A1 on the nucleon from new Jefferson Lab measurements. The experiment, which used the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer and longitudinally polarized proton (15NH3) and deuteron (15ND3) targets, collected data with a longitudinally polarized electron beam at energies between 1.6 GeV and 5.7 GeV. In the present Letter, we concentrate on our results for A1 ( x , Q2 ) and the related ratio g1 / F1 ( x , Q2 ) in the resonance and the deep inelastic …

We report results from an experiment measuring the semiinclusive reaction 2H(e,e′ps) in which the proton ps is moving at a large angle relative to the momentum transfer. If we assume that the proton was a spectator to the reaction taking place on the neutron in deuterium, the initial state of that neutron can be inferred. This method, known as spectator tagging, can be used to study electron scattering from high-momentum (off-shell) neutrons in deuterium. The data were taken with a 5.765 GeV electron beam on a deuterium target in Jefferson Laboratory's Hall B, using the CEBAF …

Production Of Large Transverse Momentum W Bosons At The Tevatron, Nikolaos Kidonakis, Agustin Sabio Vera Jan 2006

Production Of Large Transverse Momentum W Bosons At The Tevatron, Nikolaos Kidonakis, Agustin Sabio Vera

Faculty and Research Publications

We discuss the production of W bosons at large transverse momentum in p pbar collisions at the Tevatron Run I and II. W boson hadroproduction is a process of relevance in testing the Standard Model and in estimates of backgrounds to new physics. The next-to-leading order cross section in the region of large transverse momentum is dominated by threshold soft-gluon corrections which arise from incomplete cancellations near partonic threshold between graphs with real emission and virtual graphs due to the limited phase space available for real gluon emission. In this contribution it is shown how, by including next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) soft-gluon …

High-statistics cross sections for the reactions 𝛾 + p → K⁺ + Λ and 𝛾 + p → K⁺ + Σ⁰ have been measured using CLAS at Jefferson Lab for center-of-mass energies W between 1.6 and 2.53 GeV, and for -0.85 < cos θ Kc.m. < +0.95. In the K⁺ + Λ channel we confirm a resonance-like structure near W=1.9 GeV at backward kaon angles. The position and width of this structure change with angle, indicating that more than one resonance is likely playing a role. The K⁺ + Λ channel at forward angles and all energies is well described by a t-channel scaling characteristic of Regge exchange, whereas the same scaling applied to the K⁺ + Σ⁰ channel is less successful. Several existing theoretical models are compared to the data, but none provide a good representation of the results.

High-Energy Effective Action From Scattering Of Qcd Shock Waves, Ian Balitsky Jan 2006

High-Energy Effective Action From Scattering Of Qcd Shock Waves, Ian Balitsky

Physics Faculty Publications

At high energies, the relevant degrees of freedom are Wilson lines--infinite gauge links ordered along straight lines collinear to the velocities of colliding particles. The effective action for these Wilson lines is determined by the scattering of QCD shock waves. I develop the symmetric expansion of the effective action in powers of strength of one of the shock waves and calculate the leading term of the series. The corresponding first-order effective action, symmetric with respect to projectile and target, includes both up and down fan diagrams and pomeron loops

Two types of electric discharges were used to demonstrate the validity of plasma surface treatment for superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities. The experiments were performed on disc-shaped Nb samples and compared with identical samples treated with buffer chemical polishing (BCP) techniques. Surface analysis indicates comparable or superior properties of plasma-treated samples. These promising results are still preliminary and additional work is in progress.

Differential cross sections for the reaction γp→η′p have been measured with the CLAS spectrometer and a tagged photon beam with energies from 1.527 to 2.227 GeV. The results reported here possess much greater accuracy than previous measurements. Analyses of these data suggest for the first time the coupling of the η′N channel to both the S11(1535) and P11(1710) resonances, known to couple strongly to the ηN channel in photoproduction on the proton, and the importance of J=3/2 resonances in the process.

Inclusive electron scattering off the deuteron has been measured to extract the deuteron structure function F2 with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The measurement covers the entire resonance region from the quasielastic peak up to the invariant mass of the final-state hadronic system W similar or equal to 2.7 GeV with four-momentum transfers Q2 from 0.4 to 6 (GeV/c)2. These data are complementary to previous measurements of the proton structure function F2 and cover a similar two-dimensional region of Q2 and Bjorken variable x. Determination of …

Vector Theory Of Spontaneous Lorentz Violation, Shu Hong Fung Jan 2006

Vector Theory Of Spontaneous Lorentz Violation, Shu Hong Fung

Honors Theses

Classical electromagnetism predicts two massless propagating modes, which are known as the two polarizations of the photon. On the other hand, if the Lorentz symmetry of classical electromagnetism is spontaneously broken, the new theory will still have two massless Nambu-Goldstone modes resembling the photon. If the Lorentz symmetry is broken by a bumblebee potential that allows for excitations out of the minimum, then massive modes arise. Furthermore, in curved spacetime, such massive modes will be created through a process other than the usual Higgs mechanism because of the dependence of the bumblebee potential on both the vector field and the …
