Metal-organic macrocycles have received increasing attention not only due to their versatile applications such as molecular recognition, compounds encapsulation, anti-bacteria and others, but also for their important role in the study of structure-property relationship at nano scale. However, most of the constructions utilize benzene ring as the backbone, which restricts the ligand arm angle in the range of 60, 120 and 180 degrees. Thus, the topologies of most metallo-macrocycles are limited as triangles and hexagons, and explorations of using other backbones with large angles and the construction of metallo-macrocycles with more than six edges are very rare.

Size-Controlled Synthesis Of Nickel Nanoparticles Enclosed In Carbon Nanocages, Felicity Peebles, Grigorii Rudakov, Gamini U. Sumanasekera Apr 2020

Size-Controlled Synthesis Of Nickel Nanoparticles Enclosed In Carbon Nanocages, Felicity Peebles, Grigorii Rudakov, Gamini U. Sumanasekera

Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase

We have demonstrated a simple, scalable, and tunable method of obtaining densely packed Ni Nanoparticles encapsulated in Carbon Nanocages (Ni@CNCs). Using a facile method, it was shown that via a simple annealing process of precursor based on nickel acetate and citric acid, Ni@CNCs with sizes varying from 5 to 20 nm can be synthesized by changing the heating ramp rate during the synthesis from 25 to 53 °C/min. The final temperature of 600 °C was held for 10 min, and was the same for all the samples. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) multiple peaks analysis was performed to show large Ni nanoparticles …

3d Imaging Of A Binary Colloidal Fluid, Kate Livermore, Michael Korth Mar 2019

3d Imaging Of A Binary Colloidal Fluid, Kate Livermore, Michael Korth

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2019

In order to understand the nature of colloidal fluids, we wanted to visualize a 3D representation of their thermodynamic distribution. Colloidal fluids are fluids that consist of two parts: colloidal particles and a dispensing medium. Some examples include toothpaste, mayonnaise, plaster, and muddy water. We could also think about colloidal fluids simply as a mixture of two or more parts. In this poster, we used the hard-sphere system to represent the structure of colloidal fluids in a 3D graph using Mathematica (MMA). In the hard-sphere system, we used two different sizes of impenetrable spheres that could not overlap to represent …
