Low temperature powder inelastic neutron scattering measurements were performed on three different powder samples; parent BaMn2As2,12.5% K-doped Ba0.875K0.125Mn2As2 and 25% K-doped Ba(0.75)K0.25Mn2As2. The Heisenberg Model involving J1‐J2‐Jz coupling constants were compared to the data by a powder integration routine using Monte Carlo integration methods. The best magnetic parameters were selected using a chi-square test where model intensities were compared to the full (q,E) dependence of magnetic scattering. A key step to this analysis is the characterization of the background which is formed mostly by phonon scattering intensities along with other sources including the magnetic impurity scattering events. The calculated powder …

Anyonic Superconductivity In A Modified Large-U Hubbard Model, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Prasanta Panigrahi Dec 2015

Anyonic Superconductivity In A Modified Large-U Hubbard Model, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Prasanta Panigrahi

Asim Gangopadhyaya

A modified large-U Hubbard model at half filling is analyzed by a mean-field approach. Preserving a local U(1) symmetry of the action, the fluctuations about half filling are studied in the spirit of the commensurate-flux-phase condition. The fluctuations then contribute a Chern-Simons term to the tree-level Lagrangian with a coefficient appropriate to that of a half fermion. With the Coulomb repulsion term, we study the low-energy excitations of the model and show the existence of superconductivity in the presence of a four-Fermi interaction term.

Fabrication Of Robust Superconducting Granular Aluminium/Palladium Bilayer Microbolometers With Sub-Nanosecond Response, Thomas E. Wilson Feb 2014

Fabrication Of Robust Superconducting Granular Aluminium/Palladium Bilayer Microbolometers With Sub-Nanosecond Response, Thomas E. Wilson

Thomas E. Wilson

We provide a convenient recipe for fabricating reliable superconducting microbolometers as acoustic phonon detectors with sub-nanosecond response, using imagereversal optical lithography and dc-magnetron sputtering, and our recipe requires no chemical or plasma etching. Our approach solves the traditional problem for granular aluminium bolometers of unreliable (i.e., non-Ohmic) electrical contacts by sequentially sputtering the granular aluminium film and then a palladium capping layer. We use dc calibration data, the method of Danilchenko et al. [1], and direct nanosecond-pulsed photoexcitation to obtain the microbolometer’s characteristic current, thermal conductance, characteristic relaxation time, and heat capacity. We also demonstrate the use of the deconvolution …

Charge Instabilities And Phase-Separation In 3-Band Extended Hubbard Models: Effect Of O-O Hopping, N. Kothekar, K. F. Quader, David W. Allender Oct 2013

Charge Instabilities And Phase-Separation In 3-Band Extended Hubbard Models: Effect Of O-O Hopping, N. Kothekar, K. F. Quader, David W. Allender

David W Allender

We explore the interplay between various interaction and hopping terms, in particular the effect of O-O hopping, tppo on the charge instabilities and phase separation in the three-band extended Hubbard models. Within a weak-coupling mean-field approach, we find that in two dimensions (2D), tppo moves the phase separation boundary appreciably to higher dopings. This would increase the window of doping over which charge-transfer-mediated superconductivity can occur. Considering a larger phase space, we also obtain a more complete picture of the coexistence lines and spinodal decompositions, and determine the charge-transfer-instability critical point. We also consider the 1D case: tppo is found …

Vortex Physics In Confined Geometries, M. Cristina Marchetti, David R. Nelson Apr 2013

Vortex Physics In Confined Geometries, M. Cristina Marchetti, David R. Nelson

David R. Nelson

Patterned irradiation of cuprate superconductors with columnar defects allows a new generation of experiments which can probe the properties of vortex liquids by forcing them to flow in confined geometries. Such experiments can be used to distinguish experimentally between continuous disorder-driven glass transitions of vortex matter, such as the vortex glass or the Bose glass transition, and nonequilibrium polymer-like glass transitions driven by interaction and entanglement. For continuous glass transitions, an analysis of such experiments that combines an inhomogeneous scaling theory with the hydrodynamic description of viscous flow of vortex liquids can be used to infer the critical behavior. After …

Structures And Incommensurate Spin Excitations In Excess Oxygen-Doped La2cuo4+Y, Robert Birgeneau, Rebecca Christianson, Yasuo Endoh, Marc Kastner, Young Lee, Gen Shirane, Barrett Wells, Kazuyoshi Yamada Jul 2012

Structures And Incommensurate Spin Excitations In Excess Oxygen-Doped La2cuo4+Y, Robert Birgeneau, Rebecca Christianson, Yasuo Endoh, Marc Kastner, Young Lee, Gen Shirane, Barrett Wells, Kazuyoshi Yamada

Rebecca J. Christianson

Over the past decade, we have studied in detail the low-energy spin fluctuations in :a2−xSrxCuO4 for xbetween 0 and 0.18. Our experiments, as well as those by others, have revealed a fascinating interplay between the hole doping, the static and dynamic spin fluctuations and superconductivity. Recently, using electrochemical techniques, we have learned how to produce large single crystals of La2CuO4+y which are relatively homogenous. In this latter system, the dopants are characterized by annealed rather than quenched disorder. Furthermore, we have demonstrated staging behavior of the excess oxygen analogous to staging in intercalated graphite. We have now succeeded in carrying …

Topics In Electronic Structure And Spectroscopy Of Cuprates, Hsin Lin

Hsin Lin

I have applied first-principles calculations to investigate several interrelated problems concerned with the electronic structure and spectroscopy of cuprates. The specific topics addressed in this thesis are as follows. 1. By properly including doping effects beyond rigid band filling, a longstanding problem of the missing Bi-O pocket in the electronic structure of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8}$ (Bi2212) is solved. The doping effect is explained in terms of Coulombic effect between layers and is a generic property of all cuprates. 2. A systematic study for Pb/O and rare-earth doping in Bi2212 is carried out to explain the experimental phase diagrams, and a possible new …
