In some applications flexible plastic substrates are advantageous over glass substrates for organic light emitting diode (OLED) fabrication due to properties such as higher refractive index, ease ofnano-patterning for enhanced extraction of light generated in the OLED, and promise in wearable electronics and biochemical sensing. Defects, impurities, and in particular sharp edges that may be formed in patterned plastic substrates such as polycarbonate (PC) can lead to catastrophic shorts when biased due to very high local electric fields. Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) are electronic devices made by sandwitching organic light emissive materials between two electrodes. When voltage is applied across the two conductors, a bright light is generated. The color of the emitting light depends on the band gap of the semiconducting material. The work described here focuses on designing and synthesizing narrow band gap molecular systems derived from fused-arene derivatives for producing organic blue light emitting diodes. Three molecular systems derived from anthracene, pyrene, and carbazole, were designed and synthesized. The wide use of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) is materializing as devices exhibit enhanced performance. Attention has been placed on finding quality solution-processable organic semiconducting materials amenable to low cost processing via solution-based fabrication methods. The high solubility and good film formability intrinsic to polymers have led to their use in the majority of solution-processed devices. Growing commercialization and extensive research demonstrate that OLEDs have promising applications in solid state lighting, display, and optical sensor technologies. This work focuses on development of OLED-based optical sensors. OLEDs, sensor films, parallel sensing and enhanced integration with photodetectors were studied.

Interface engineering methods e.g., UV-Ozone treatment, graded junction, nanoparticle based coating were investigated to improve microcavity OLEDs, UV OLEDs and Alq3 OLEDs. Sensors are expected to have better performance when excited by these OLEDs.
