Two Aspects Of Magnetic Nanoparticle Self-Assembly On Thin-Film Multilayers: Custom Media Properties And Accurate Determination Of Nanoparticle Anisotropy Constant, Sara L. Fitzgerald

Theses and Dissertations

ZFC/FC moment versus temperature measurements are a common technique to determine magnetic properties of nanoparticles. In this work, I varied both applied field strength and nanoparticle concentration to study resulting changes in blocking temperature, TB, and anisotropy constant, K. TB and K values were obtained using both existing and new analytic methods. Accurate determination of these parameters helps researchers optimize the use of magnetic nanoparticles for a variety of applications, including magnetic heating, drug delivery, and magnetic field-directed self-assembly. For magnetic self-assembly particularly, not only nanoparticle properties, but also the magnetic properties of the substrate alter …

Here we seek to take a traditional Magneto Optic Kerr Effect (MOKE) experimental design, useful for local magnetization measurements, and apply it to measuring aligned multiferroic Janus nano fiber agglomerates. In order to achieve this we modify the traditional MOKE geometry by measuring our Kerr rotation from collimated scattered light, rather than the conventional specular reflection. Using various techniques to improve signal to noise ratio (SNR), we extend the application of this scattered MOKE geometry to build families of First Order Reversal Curves (FORC). Using an alternative analysis technique, FORC curves are processed and become a FORC diagram, which is …

Electronic Structure And Stability Of Ligated Superatoms And Bimetallic Clusters, William H. Blades Jan 2016

Electronic Structure And Stability Of Ligated Superatoms And Bimetallic Clusters, William H. Blades

Theses and Dissertations

Quantum confinement in small metal clusters leads to a bunching of states into electronic shells reminiscent of shells in atoms. The addition of ligands can tune the valence electron count and electron distribution in metal clusters. A combined experimental and theoretical study of the reactivity of methanol with AlnIm clusters reveals that ligands can enhance the stability of clusters. In some cases the electronegative ligand may perturb the charge density of the metallic core generating active sites that can lead to the etching of the cluster. Also, an investigation is conducted to understand how the bonding …
