Four Derivations Of Schrödinger’S Time Dependent Equation, Sydney Swanson
Four Derivations Of Schrödinger’S Time Dependent Equation, Sydney Swanson
Essential Studies UNDergraduate Showcase
Physics and the natural world have been studied by humans since the first person wondered ‘Why?’ The Schrödinger equation is important because it attempts to describe a relatively new (to us) and unfamiliar part of our universe, behavior of subatomic particles, and helps modern scientists uncover secrets that have proven useful in technology and explaining our origins. The time dependent Schrödinger equation can be derived from various starting points in Classical such as the equation of a wave, the time independent Schrödinger equation, and Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Why Quantum mechanics exists, useful applications, and cases when it fails or is inaccurate …
Computational Techniques For Scattering Amplitudes, Juliano A. Everett
Computational Techniques For Scattering Amplitudes, Juliano A. Everett
Publications and Research
Scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory can be described as the probability of a scattering process to happen within a high energy particle interaction, as well as a bridge between experimental measurements and the prediction of the theory.
In this research project, we explore the Standard Model of Particle Theory, it’s representation in terms of Feynman diagrams and the algebraic formulas associated with each combination.
Using the FeynArts program as a tool for generating Feynman diagrams, we evaluate the expressions of a set of physical processes, and explain why these techniques become necessary to achieve this goal.

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Excited nucleon states are established as an important milestone to understand quantum chromodynamics in the non-perturbative region. Even after decades of study, not all of the excited states predicted by different theoretical approaches have been verified. The disparity between the predicted states and the verified states is known as the “missing baryon problem". The verified states were mostly established using pion beam data or through Nπ decay channels, but are not sufficient to address the missing baryon problem. In recent years, new experiments were conducted worldwide at CLAS in Jefferson Lab, ELSA in Bonn, MAMI in Mainz, and so on, …
Geometry, Growth And Pattern Formation In Thin Elastic Structures, Salem Al-Mosleh
Geometry, Growth And Pattern Formation In Thin Elastic Structures, Salem Al-Mosleh
Doctoral Dissertations
Thin shells are abundant in nature and industry, from atomic to planetary scales. The mechanical behavior of a thin shell depends crucially on its geometry and embedding in 3 dimensions (3D). In fact, the behavior of extremely thin shells becomes scale independent and only depends on geometry. That is why the crumpling of graphene will have similarities to the crumpling of paper. In this thesis, we start by discussing the static behavior of thin shells, highlighting the role of asymptotic curves (curves with zero normal curvature) in determining the possible deformations and in controlling the folding patterns. In particular, we …

This paper reports the measurement of polarized and unpolarized cross sections for the ep→e′p′γ reaction, which is composed of deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) and Bethe-Heitler (BH) processes, at an electron beam energy of 5.88 GeV at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility using the Large Acceptance Spectrometer CLAS. The unpolarized cross sections and polarized cross section differences have been measured over broad kinematics, 0.10 < xB < 0.58, 1.0 < Q2 <4.8 GeV2 and 0.09<−t <2.00 GeV2. The results are found to be consistent with previous CLAS data, and these new data are discussed in the framework of the generalized parton distribution approach. Calculations …−t>4.8>
Indirect Imaging Using Computational Imaging Techniques, Aparna Viswanath
Indirect Imaging Using Computational Imaging Techniques, Aparna Viswanath
Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations
The work describes various methods employed towards solving the problem of indirect imaging. Computational techniques are employed to indirectly decipher information about an object hidden from view of a camera. Notion of virtualizing the source of illumination and detectors on real world rough surfaces was exploited to construct a non line of sight computational imager. Diversity was explored from the stand point of both illumination of the object and imaging of light reflected from the object. To understand the impact of scattering by real world rough surfaces, an instrument was developed that allows characterization of isoplanatic angle for different surface …
Using Strong Laser Fields To Produce Antihydrogen Ions, Christopher Michael Keating
Using Strong Laser Fields To Produce Antihydrogen Ions, Christopher Michael Keating
Dissertations and Theses
We provide estimates of both cross section and rate for the stimulated attachment of a second positron into the (1s2 1Se) state of the H+ ion using Ohmura and Ohmura's (1960 Phys. Rev. 118 154) effective range theory, Reiss's strong field approximation (1980 Phys. Rev. A 22, 1786), and the principle of detailed balancing. Our motivation for producing H+ ion include its potential to be used as an intermediate state in bringing antihydrogen to ultra-cold (sub-mK) temperatures required for a variety of studies, which include both spectroscopy and the probing of the gravitational interaction of …

New results on the single-differential and fully integrated cross sections for the process γvp -> p'π+π- are presented. The experimental data were collected with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. Measurements were carried out in the kinematic region of the reaction invariant mass W from 1.3 to 1.825 GeV and the photon virtuality Q2 from 0.4 to 1.0 GeV2. The cross sections were obtained in narrow Q2 bins (0.05 GeV2) with the smallest statistical uncertainties achieved in double-pion electroproduction experiments to date. The results were found to be in …
Three Dimensional Passive Localization For Single Path Arrival With Unknown Starting Conditions, Britt Aguda
Three Dimensional Passive Localization For Single Path Arrival With Unknown Starting Conditions, Britt Aguda
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Introduced in this paper is the time difference of arrival (TDoA) conic approximation method (TCAM), a technique for passive localization in three dimensions with unknown starting conditions. The TDoA of a mutually detected signal across pairs of detectors is used to calculate the relative angle between the signal source and the center point of the separation between the detectors in the pair. The relative angle is calculated from the TDoA using a mathematical model called the TDoA approximation of the zenith angle (TAZA). The TAZA angle defines the opening angle of a conic region of probability that contains the signal …

We present precision measurements of the target and beam-target spin asymmetries from neutral pion electroproduction in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab. We scattered 6-GeV, longitudinally polarized electrons off longitudinally polarized protons in a cryogenic 14NH3 target, and extracted double and single target spin asymmetries for ep→e′ π0 X in multidimensional bins in four-momentum transfer (1.0 2 < 3.2 GeV2), Bjorken -x (0.12 < x < 0.48), hadron energy fraction (0.4 < z 0.7), tranverse pion meomentum (0 < PT < 1.0 GeV), and azimuthal angle ϕh between the lepton scattering and hadron production planes. We extracted asymmetries as a function of both x …

The Development Of A Diffraction Grating For An Element Of Directional Output Of Radiation From Microlasers, Evgenii Levdik
The Development Of A Diffraction Grating For An Element Of Directional Output Of Radiation From Microlasers, Evgenii Levdik
The International Student Science Fair 2018
In nanophotonics, axisymmetric microlasers became widespread. As they have lots of advantages, they can be used in many scientific and industrial areas, such as microchips for data transfer in order to make electrical circuits smaller. But there is a drawback: they radiate in all directions in the plane of the substrate. This is why elements of directional output of radiation are being developed. A necessary part of such element is the diffraction grating applied to the surface of the waveguide. Such gratings are already being created, but with very expensive methods, for example, electronic lithography. We present a technique for …
Determining The Activation Energy Of Glucose Syrup Using The Arrhenius Equation, Utkarsh Sharma
Determining The Activation Energy Of Glucose Syrup Using The Arrhenius Equation, Utkarsh Sharma
The International Student Science Fair 2018
This experiment finds the activation energy of corn syrup using the Arrhenius equation. This was done through a simple experiment of dropping a ball into corn syrup and measuring its terminal velocity. From this, the viscosity could be derived, through the use of rearrangement of Newton’s First Law. The temperature of the corn syrup was also varied through the use of a microwave by raising it to 50 degrees Celsius. It is known that the more viscous a liquid is, the greater the activation energy for the liquid, which is essentially the energy barrier that a molecule has to overcome …

Energy Conversion System For Travelers (Ecost), Thipok Bovornratanaraks
The International Student Science Fair 2018
We have innovated “The Energy Conversion System for Travelers” or the ECoST. With the fact that most travelers have wheeled cabin-bags, whilst walking, the wheels will rotate so why don’t we harvest electricity from this kinetic energy? We thus install our innovation, the ECoST, to the bag to generate electricity from the spinning wheels. The electricity is then kept in the storage unit and ready to charge your empty battery devices in an emergency case via a USB port. To make life easy, our ECoST was designed to replicate the power bank charging method; therefore, we can charge …
Granular Convection And Crystallization Of A Two-Dimensional Granular Medium, Donley S. Cormode
Granular Convection And Crystallization Of A Two-Dimensional Granular Medium, Donley S. Cormode
Honors Projects
Granular media are everywhere from beaches to factories to your kitchen cabinets. There are a rich array of phenomena to study with granular media. These include granular convection, jamming, and crystallization. The systems tend to be macroscopic, so it is easy to collect data. The supplies are low-cost and easy to obtain. Studying granular media gives researchers the opportunity to explore foundational ideas in fields such as crystallography and condensed matter. This paper describes a simple, low cost apparatus used to study a vertically shaken two-dimensional granular medium of glass beads. This paper will also describe a few preliminary studies …
An Analysis Of Frenkel Defects And Backgrounds Modeling For Supercdms Dark Matter Searches, Matthew Stein
An Analysis Of Frenkel Defects And Backgrounds Modeling For Supercdms Dark Matter Searches, Matthew Stein
Physics Theses and Dissertations
Years of astrophysical observations suggest that dark matter comprises more than ~80 % of all matter in the universe. Particle physics theories favor a weakly-interacting particle that could be directly detected in terrestrial experiments. The Super Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (SuperCDMS) Collaboration operates world-leading experiments to directly detect dark matter interacting with ordinary matter. The SuperCDMS Soudan experiment searched for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) via their elastic-scattering interactions with nuclei in low-temperature germanium detectors.
During the operation of the SuperCDMS Soudan experiment, 210Pb sources were installed to study background rejection of the Ge detectors. Data from these sources …
The Impact Of Ppb W/Z Lhc Data On Ncteq15 Parton Distribution Functions With An Emphasis On Refitting The Ncteq15 Npdf Set, Eric Godat
Physics Theses and Dissertations
As the LHC experiments increase their statistics and reduce their systematics, it is in- creasingly important to reduce the theoretical uncertainties so we can perform precision com- parisons. The parton distribution functions (PDFs) which describe the hadronic structure of protons and nuclei are the critical link between the experimental data and the proposed theoretical models; hence, a better understanding of the PDFs is essential for improved pre- dictions. Nuclear PDFs, in particular, have proven valuable in this regard, especially for flavor differentiation. I introduce ”nCTEQ+LHC,” the first PDF set fit using the nCTEQ formalism to include data from the LHC. …

Investigating Student Understanding Of Vector Calculus In Upper-Division Electricity And Magnetism: Construction And Determination Of Differential Element In Non-Cartesian Coordinate Systems, Benjamin Schermerhorn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Differential length, area, and volume elements appear ubiquitously over the course of upper-division electricity and magnetism (E&M), used to sum the effects of or determine expressions for electric or magnetic fields. Given the plethora of tasks with spherical and cylindrical symmetry, non-Cartesian coordinates are commonly used, which include scaling factors as coefficients for the differential terms to account for the curvature of space. Furthermore, the application to vector fields means differential lengths and areas are vector quantities. So far, little of the education research in E&M has explored student understanding and construction of the non-Cartesian differential elements used in applications …

We report on the first measurement of cross sections for exclusive deeply virtual pion electroproduction off the proton, ep→e′nπ+, above the resonance region at backward pion center-of-mass angles. The φπ⁎-dependent cross sections were measured, from which we extracted three combinations of structure functions of the proton. Our results are compatible with calculations based on nucleon-to-pion transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs). These non-perturbative objects are defined as matrix elements of three-quark-light-cone-operators and characterize partonic correlations with a particular emphasis on baryon charge distribution inside a nucleon. The photoproduction of omega mesons off the proton has been studied in the reaction γp -> pω using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and the frozen-spin target in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. For the first time, the target asymmetry T has been measured in photoproduction from the decay ω -> π+π-π0, using a transversely polarized target with energies ranging from just above the reaction threshold up to 2.8 GeV. Significant nonzero values are observed for these asymmetries, reaching about 30-40% in the third-resonance region. New measurements for the …
On The Quantization Of Plane Gravitational Waves In Loop Quantum Gravity, Elise Lepage '18
On The Quantization Of Plane Gravitational Waves In Loop Quantum Gravity, Elise Lepage '18
Physics Theses
Gravitational waves are oscillations in the geometry of spacetime caused by the movement of mass or energy. In loop quantum gravity, geometry is quantized so spatial quantities such as area and volume take on discrete values. We worked on quantizing plane gravitational waves, which propagate in one direction and have uniform wavefronts perpendicular to the direction of travel, using the method of canonical quantization on general relativity.
For canonical quantization, a theory is expressed in terms of its canonical variables and constraints on those variables, then the variables and constraints are taken to quantum operators and the states of the …

Electronic devices are useful when going out into the wilderness. A portable power supply is necessary to keep an electronic device alive. This project created a device that converts human energy into electricity to charge electronic devices. This thesis overviews the device’s design, build, and tests. Two different tests were run to determine that the device is capable of charging the storage battery. The device presented can provide 14 minutes of charging time with one hour …
Increasing The Longevity Of Tungsten Filaments In A Zone Refiner, Byron D. Greenlee
Increasing The Longevity Of Tungsten Filaments In A Zone Refiner, Byron D. Greenlee
Senior Theses
Zone refining is used for its ability to purify material and grow single crystals. To produce these single crystals, a suspended molten zone, generated by electron bombardment, passes along the polycrystalline stock. During a zone refining run, the filaments that produce the electron bombardment can fail. In this project, the longevity of tungsten filaments in a zone refiner was investigated. A new bombardment geometry was constructed to attempt to increase the longevity of the filaments. The new geometry had a shield machined into it to prevent line-of-sight impurities originating in the molten zone from striking the filaments. It was found …
Effects Of Tension On Resonant Frequencies Of Strings, Blake Burnett
Effects Of Tension On Resonant Frequencies Of Strings, Blake Burnett
Senior Theses
This project tests and explores resonance of strings. Since all materials and mechanisms are affected by vibrations, it is important to know the frequencies at which resonance occurs. To explore this subject, strings were used as a model material to test the effect tension has on resonance. The fundamental frequencies and the corresponding modes of resonance were used to analyze the data. The results of this experiment show that increasing tension on a string increases its resonance frequency. Understanding the physics behind resonance frequency allows systems to be designed to take advantage of resonance properties, or to avoid resonance where …
