Time-Delay And Doppler Tests Of The Lorentz Symmetry Of Gravity, Quentin G. Bailey

Modifications to the classic time-delay effect and Doppler shift in general relativity (GR) are studied in the context of the Lorentz-violating standard-model extension (SME). We derive the leading Lorentz- violating corrections to the time-delay and Doppler shift signals, for a light ray passing near a massive body. It is demonstrated that anisotropic coefficients for Lorentz violation control a time-dependent behavior of these signals that is qualitatively different from the conventional case in GR. Estimates of sensitivities to gravity-sector coefficients in the SME are given for current and future experiments, including the recent Cassini solar conjunction experiment.

This thesis discusses research being done to understand the inner parts of the Milky Way Galaxy. We already know that there are dense star clouds, a supermassive black hole, and a large bar structure, but much of the inner galaxy is shrouded in mystery. Dust absorption, for one thing, prevents us from seeing the galactic center directly with our eyes.

Gravitational Lensing has become an integral part of astrophysics and the study of matter in the universe. In weak gravitational lensing, an object appears distorted when viewed from the observer’s perspective. This is caused by the bundle of light being distorted by an object of considerable mass. Because the distance to each part of this bundle is not the same, the rays of light are affected differently causing a shearing and magnification of the image. Using the requirement of Möbius invariance of 𝒩 = 4 super Yang-Mills amplitudes in the Regge limit, we restore the explicit form of the conformal next-to-leading-order Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) kernel out of the eigenvalues known from the forward next-to-leading-order BFKL result.
