Three-Body Analytical Potential For Interacting Helium Atoms, Carol A. Parish, Clifford E. Dykstra Nov 1994

Three-Body Analytical Potential For Interacting Helium Atoms, Carol A. Parish, Clifford E. Dykstra

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Large basis set ab initio calculations have been carried out for a dense grid of points on the He, potential energy surface. Three-body contributions were extracted at every point, and a number of concise functional representations for the three-body potential surface were then examined. Three-body multipolar dispersion terms and other radial and angular terms were used in the representations, and an assessment of relative importance of the different terms is presented. Combined with a two-body He-He potential, the results of this work should offer a high quality interaction potential for simulations of aggregated helium.

The magnetic properties of a series of Nd2Fe17-xAlx solid solutions, with x equal to 2.04, 4.01, 5.97, 7.94, and 9.06, have been studied by magnetic measurements, neutron diffraction, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Magnetization studies indicate that the Curie temperature increases from 330 K in Nd2Fe17 to a maximum of ~470 K at an x of 3.5. The compounds crystallize in the Th2Zn17 structure with lattice parameters and unit cell volumes which increase linearly with increasing aluminum content. The neutron diffraction results indicate that aluminum ...

Aluminum-substituted Nd2Fe17-xAlx solid solutions with x=2.30, 4.44, 6.13, 8.00, and 9.40 have been studied by neutron diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. A Rietveld analysis of the neutron scattering indicates that the aluminum atoms have a high initial affinity for the 18h site, show a high affinity for the 6c site at high aluminum concentrations, and are absent from the 9d site at all aluminum concentrations. The Mössbauer spectra show a maximum in both the maximum and weighted average hyperfine field for x≅2. This indicates that the lattice expansion which ...

Neutron-Diffraction And Mössbauer Effect Study Of The Tb2Fe17-XAlX Solid Solutions, Gaya Kanishka Marasinghe, Sanjay R. Mishra, Oran Allan Pringle, Gary J. Long, Zhong Bo Hu, William B. Yelon, Fernande Grandjean, D. P. Middleton, K. H. J. Buschow Sep 1994

The magnetic properties of a series of Tb2Fe17-xAlx solid solutions, with nominal x compositions of 0, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, have been studied by neutron diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Neutron-diffraction data indicate that the compounds all crystallize with the Th2Zn17 structure and that the aluminum atoms are excluded from the 9d site and show a distinct preference for the 6c site only for an aluminum content greater than 6. The unit-cell volume increases by approximately 1% per aluminum atom substituted in the formula unit. The magnetic moment per ...

Method For Producing Strain Tolerant Multifilamentary Oxide Superconducting Wire, Douglas K. Finnemore, Theodore A. Miller, Jerome E. Ostenson, Louis A. Schwartzkopf, Steven C. Sanders

Iowa State University Patents

A strain tolerant multifilamentary wire capable of carrying superconducting currents is provided comprising a plurality of discontinuous filaments formed from a high temperature superconducting material. The discontinuous filaments have a length at least several orders of magnitude greater than the filament diameter and are sufficiently strong while in an amorphous state to withstand compaction. A normal metal is interposed between and binds the discontinuous filaments to form a normal metal matrix capable of withstanding heat treatment for converting the filaments to a superconducting state. The geometry of the filaments within the normal metal matrix provides substantial filament-to-filament overlap, and the ...

An x-ray diffraction study of the substitution of gallium in Tb 2Fe17 to form the Tb2Fe17-xGax solid solutions indicates that the compounds adopt the rhombohedral Th2Zn17 structure. The unit cell volume and the a-axis lattice parameter increase linearly with increasing gallium content. The c-axis lattice parameter increases linearly from x=0 to 6 and then decreases between x=7 and 8. Magnetic studies show the Curie temperature increases by ~150° above that of Tb2Fe17 to reach a maximum between x=3 and 4, and then decreases with ...

The surface-induced ordering in thin films of asymmetric deuterated polystyrene (dPS)- poly(viny1pyridine) (PVP) diblock and triblock copolymers of comparable polymerization index and PVP volume fraction - 0.25) was studied using transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, secondary ion massspectrometry, and neutron reflectivity. The morphology of both di- and triblock copolymer films was found to be cylindrical except for the layer adjacent to the silicon oxide surface, which due to the strong interaction of silica with PVP, was lamellar. The spacing between adjacent cylindrical layers was found to be consistent with mean field theory predictions. In the triblock copolymer films ...

The Mössbauer spectra of Sm2Fe17 and Ho 2Fe17 and their nitrides have been measured between 295 and 85 K and analyzed with a model which is consistent with our earlier work on R2Fe17 and R2Fe17Nx compounds, where R is Pr, Nd, and Th. This model is completely consistent throughout these rare-earth compounds and is in agreement with the crystallographic changes occurring upon nitrogenation and with the prediction of band structure calculations. The dramatic increase in Curie temperature in the nitrides results from the expansion of the crystallographic ...

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

We have used differential scanning calorimetry and x-ray diffraction to study the crystalline phases of the 6,5-annulene isomer of C61H2. At 308 K the methylenated fullerenes are orientationally disordered in a face-centered cubic lattice with lattice parameter 14.19±0.02 Å. Below Tc=290 K the symmetry is lowered to Pa3¯, a simple-cubic structure. At 20 K the lattice parameter is 14.06±0.02 Å, with substantial statistical disorder remaining. The transition temperature in C61H2 is slightly higher than in C60O and higher still than in C60 ...

A Mössbauer Effect Study Of The Microscopic Magnetic Properties Of Th2Fe17 And Its Nitride, Th2Fe17N2.6, Gary J. Long, Oran Allan Pringle, Fernande Grandjean, T. H. Jacobs, K. H. Buschow Mar 1994

A Mössbauer Effect Study Of The Microscopic Magnetic Properties Of Th2Fe17 And Its Nitride, Th2Fe17N2.6, Gary J. Long, Oran Allan Pringle, Fernande Grandjean, T. H. Jacobs, K. H. Buschow

The Mössbauer spectra of Th2Fe17 and Th2Fe17N2.6 have been measured at various temperatures between 85 and 295 K and analyzed with a model that is based on the Wigner-Seitz cell environment of each iron site, the orientation of the magnetization, and the magnetic moments as determined from either neutron-diffraction measurements or band-structure calculations. Upon nitrogenation of Th2Fe17, the 85 K weighted average isomer shift increases from 0.037 to 0.156 mm/s and further the isomer shifts of the four crystallographically distinct sites increase in agreement with ...

Nmr And Nqr Study Of The Thermodynamically Stable Quasicrystals , Ananda Shastri Jan 1994

Nmr And Nqr Study Of The Thermodynamically Stable Quasicrystals , Ananda Shastri

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

[superscript]27Al and [superscript]63,65Cu NMR measurements are reported for powder samples of stable AlCuFe and AlCuRu icosahedral quasicrystals and their crystalline approximants, and for a AlPdMn single grain quasicrystal. Furthermore, [superscript]27Al NQR spectra at 4.2 K have been observed in the AlCuFe and AlCuRu samples. From the quadrupole perturbed NMR spectra at different magnetic fields, and from the zero field NQR spectra, a wide distribution of local electric field gradient (EFG) tensor components and principal axis system orientations was found at the Al site. A model EFG calculation based on a 1/1 AlCuFe approximant was ...

Characterization And Analysis Of Viscoelastically Loaded Thin Film Piezoelectric Resonators Incorporated In An Oscillator Microsensing System , Ronald Patrick O'Toole

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In the recent advancement of piezoelectric resonator technology, there has been a large growth in the application of these devices for chemical sensing. These sensors operate by detecting changes in their environment which perturb the electrical - acoustic operation and in turn can be harnessed by means of supporting electronics and signal processing to monitor various processes. Examples include remote environmental monitoring, chemical process control, and commercial gas phase detectors. In this dissertation, the chemical sensing theory and properties of piezoelectric resonators such as the bulk-acoustic wave thin-film resonator (TFR) and the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) are developed. This analysis concentrates ...
