A Theoretical Model For Biased Superlattice Devices, Michael Ferner

Theses

A model describing the subband structures and tunneling characteristics of superlattices is presented. The model solves the envelope function equations by the transfer matrix technique. The results are codified in a Fortran program, and the model is applied to several structures.

Superlattice have been studied extensively, however many new structures await investigation.

This model is presented as a preliminary design tool. The program allows a designer to do preliminary calculations. This type of investigation guides a designer toward a goal by making possible a large number of calculations on many different structures.

Recently, in communication system, fiber optics has become a most interesting development tool as a transmission medium. It first appeared as a feasible transmission medium in 1970. The reason for the development in fiber optics comes from the overwhelming advantage in technology and economy compared to wires and coaxial links. For technology progress, typically, optical fiber has a wide transmission band-width (0.1-1000 GHz), lower loss per unit length (0.15 – 5 dB km-1[1]), and does not allow electromagnetic interference. The theoretical basis for using electron mirrors as correctors of chromatic aberration is presented and an experimental verification of correction of chromatic aberration is demonstrated. A hyperbolic electrostatic electron mirror operating in its converging range and at unity magnification was used as a corrector. A novel separating system with deflections taking place at image planes was developed to implement the mirror without impairing the resolution. Correction was demonstrated in an electron optical probe system. The chromatic aberration was measured by means of the shadows cast by a fine mesh placed near the final image. Current adaptive optical telescope designs use a single deformable mirror (DM) to compensate for atmospheric distortion. The corrected field of view (FOV) of an adaptive optics system could be increased through the use of multiple DMs optically conjugated to corresponding planes which sample the turbulence region in altitude. Often, the atmospheric turbulence responsible for the degradation of telescope images is concentrated in several layers. Each DM would correct for the component of the total wavefront in the pupil contributed by one or more layers. Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometry (FTMS) is used to make energy resolved ion-neutral reaction measurements at high translational energies (up to several hundred eV). The technique is demonstrated for collisional detachment of anions, and should be easily applied to other inelastic reactions. Collisional detachment cross sections of iodine anions onto gas phase targets of neon, xenon, and trifluoromethyl iodide are measured for 1-300 eV (lab frame). Peak detachment cross sections are roughly 2, 8.5, and 7 Å2, respectively. Ion kinetic measurements show the iodine anion is unreactive in trifluoromethyl iodide at thermal energies. A molecular-beam-sampling apparatus utilizing both a time-of-flight mass spectrometer with vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization and a quadrupole mass spectrometer with electron impact ionization is described. These systems are used to analyze reactants and products, as well as reactive intermediates, from flow tube experiments at reduced pressures and elevated temperatures. It is shown that the quadrupole signal sensitivity can be predicted using literature cross sections which are based upon the atom hybridization within the various molecules. Measurements of the VUV photoionization sensitivity for stable species led to development of a group additivity approach to predict cross sections. This approach was extended …

In the atmospheric window thermal imaging technology, the 8-12 micron spectral range is of particular interest, since the 300 K black body radiation peaks at around 10 micron with a flux as large as 1019photons/cm2sec. Due to its extreme temperature sensitivity for the 300 K background imaging, this long wave length infrared atmospheric window is vital for a variety of applications. A monolithic GaAs multiple quantum well (MQW) IR image sensor in this spectrum region is being developed in the research group of Profs. K. Chin and J. C. Hensel.

A theoretical study of the electronic and optical properties in polytype heterostructures is presented in this thesis.

In the first part of the thesis (Chap. 2 and Chap. 3), an explicit expression for calculating the subband structure and tunneling is formulated by the incorporation of the envelope function approximations and the transfer matrix technique. This paper presents an approach to modeling a binary mixture near a surf ace. The approach used is based on statistical mechanics. The Cluster Variation (CV) method is used to solve an Ising-like model with a cluster size of two (neighboring lattice points). The free energy of the system is expressed in terms of the probabilities of occurrences of particular clusters. The CV method is first developed for a homogeneous system which leads to a set of three non-linear partial differential equations. A Li vapor oven, to be used as a source of Li target atoms in electron capture and multiple ionization experiments, was designed and installed in the beamline of the Van de Graaff accelerator at Western Michigan University. The oven was tested using two different projectile beams, protons and He+. The test results indicate that Li evaporated from the oven in the form of a cloud rather than as a jet spray. For He+ colliding with Li it was found that the projectile single-electron loss yield is about three orders of magnitude larger than the single-electron capture yield, as expected …

W ith the complex continuation method, introduced by Gupta and Sutherland (1976), the grand partition function for the sine-Gordon model of charge density waves may be calculated without violation of charge conservation. Contrary to previous works by Okwamoto, Takayama and Shiba (1979) and Turkevich and Doniach (1982) the chemical potential becomes temperature dependent. By direct comparison of numerical results with those of the above mentioned authors it is shown that the incommensurate-commensurate transition does not occur in the previously predicted temperature range.

The concept of localization of electrons in semiconductors has been known ever since the 1960's when P. W. Anderson and N. F. Mott made detail investigations on the transport properties of alloys. At the end of the last decade, however, physicist started looking for localization in other systems. Specifically, they looked at the localization of light and acoustic waves in disordered systems. Localization is a property which arises for all wavelike excitations in disordered media.

Two formalisms using the transfer matrix technique, the first one by Gupta and Sutherland (1976) and the second one by Guyer and Miller (1979), are investigated and a proof is given for their equivalence.

Furthermore, it is pointed out that previous studies neglected the difficulties that arise from nonhermitian pseudo Hamiltonian. This work proves that the same results are obtained by taking into account the nonhermiticity of the pseudo Hamiltonian.

Thus, the transfer integral technique is extended to nonhermitian pseudo Hamiltonians.

This research concerns the effects on samples of nominal composition Bil.8Pb0.2Sr2Ca2cu30y which were exposed to hot, dense argon in a ballistic compressor. The investigations were concentrated on two specimens which were exposed to hot, dense argon at about 1800 K (peak pressure 330 atm) and 1500 K (peak pressure 230 atm), respectively. Sample Bi #1 showed a completely melted surface structure after triple exposure in the ballistic compressor at 1800 K while the surface of sample Bi #7 was just partly melted after double exposure at 1500 K. A new technique is used to observe the dynamics of electronic alignment in a dissociating collision complex. The technique requires the absorption of two optical photons during a single binary collision. Two exciting light fields are tuned into the wings of the 3s1s0-3p1 and 3p1p1-5s1s0 resonances of Mg where strong collisions with rare gas atoms induce transitions between corresponding molecular states. A simulation model was developed for a dye mixing process and for the prediction of the optical properties of the paper. The model was integrated with the MAPPS (Modular Analysis of Pulp and Paper Systems) simulation software package. The model was validated using dyed handsheets made in a laboratory and dyed paper made on a pilot papermachine. Validation comprised of prediction of the optical properties of the handsheets and the machine-made paper which contained various combinations of three non-fluorescent dyes. Doubly differential cross sections, in angle and energy, for state-selective single-electron capture from He and Ar by Ar4+ and Ar5+ ions have been studied experimentally at laboratory impact energies of 25q, 50q, and lOOq eV (q = 4 and 5, where q is the ion charge state) and at laboratory scattering angles between 0° and 5.5°, by means of translational energy spectroscopy. The translational energy-gain spectra show that only a few final states are selectively populated. A theoretical approach was developed to model the vibrational dynamics of amorphous, two-dimensional materials. The materials were modeled as continuous random networks (CRN's) comprising an assemblage of planar rings of diverse size. In-plane vibrational modes for symmetric 4-, 5-, 6-, 7-, and 8-membered rings were examined. Vibrational states of isolated rings were modified by coupling the rings to a continuous network to represent rings embedded in a CRN. An effective force constant was used to couple the ring vibrations to the network's collective motions. The 88-keV first-excited nuclear state in 109Ag has a mean lifetime of 57.1 sec and a corresponding natural linewidth of 1.15 x 10-17 eV which is nearly six orders of magnitude narrower than the width for the 93-keV 13.2-μsec state in 67Zn. The 93-keV transition in 67Zn has the narrowest linewidth for which the Mossbauer effect has been observed. The 88-keV transition in 109Ag is obviously a very difficult case for the observation of the Mossbauer effect and provides a stringent test for exploring the practical limits of inhomogeneous line broadening in real single …

Single and double ionization of helium by highly charged sulfur projectiles is investigated over an energy range of 0.16 to 1.6 MeV/u. Absolute cross sections for the processes of pure ionization, ionization associated with single capture, and ionization associated with single loss by S6,13+ projectiles were experimentally determined and compared with previous results and theories. Ratios of double-tosingle ionization for each outgoing projectile charge state were also determined and compared with theory. The interaction of a high intensity laser beam with a plasma is generally susceptible to the filamentation instability due to nonuniformities in the laser profile. In ponderomotive filamentation high intensity spots in the beam expell plasma by ponderomotive force, lowering the local density, causing even more light to be focused into the already high intensity region. The result--the beam is broken up into a filamentary structure.;Several optical smoothing techniques have been proposed to eliminate this problem. Calcium ions are important mediators in the mechanism of contraction and relaxation of muscle fibers. Depolarization of sarcolemma and transverse tubule causes an increase of myoplasmic ca2+ concentration which induces contraction of the myofibrils. In skeletal muscle fibers, the intracellular Ca2+ concentraton is regulated by an extensive membrane system, the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). Ca2+-release from SR is initiated by depolarization of the transverse tubule via a process referred to as excitation-contraction coupling. The Ca2+ - release channel located in the junctional SR plays an important role in this mechanism.

This thesis presents the results of a measurement of the branching fraction of the $K\sb{L}\to\mu\bar{\mu}$ decay. This decay is scGIM supressed in the Standard Model, and provides a useful test of that model. Additionally, the degree of deviation from the unitary limit provides a useful test for several other models. The experiment was performed at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Alternating Gradient Synchrotron facility. The apparatus consisted of a two-magnet mass spectrometer, together with dual electromagnetic and muon particle identification systems. A total of 281 $K\sb{L}\to\mu\bar{\mu}$ events were observed. Normalizing to the 15,768 $K\sb{L}\to\pi\bar{\pi}$ events observed results in a branching fraction …

A common example for which this technique is used is a system with electric and magnetic fields given by B = {dollar}\delta y{dollar}cx x + xcx y + {dollar}\gamma{dollar}cx z and E = {dollar}\epsilon{dollar}cx z, where {dollar}\delta{dollar}, {dollar}\gamma{dollar}, and {dollar}\epsilon{dollar} are constant parameters. Investigations of negative ion and electron emission from gas-covered metal surfaces due to the impact of low energy (30-300 eV) positive ions and, separately, photons (2-5 eV) are presented. In both cases, the negative ion formation process is thought to occur via electron tunneling from the surface or its substrate to a sputtered or photodesorbed neutral atom or molecule.;In particular, absolute total negative ion and electron yields for collisions of positive alkali ions with a gas-covered Mo substrate have been measured. In this study, liquid junctions were used to characterize silicon and silicon subjected to various reactive ion etching (RIE); surface optimization of CuInSe{dollar}\sb2{dollar}; and photo-modification of InSe. Impedance spectroscopy and modulation spectroscopies such as electrolyte electroreflectance (EER), photoreflectance (PR), and photoreflectance in the presence of electrolyte (EPR) were the major methodologies that were used for investigating the dielectric properties of the semiconductors and their interface with the ambients.
