Theses

Properties of monolayer semiconductor, MoS2, are presented in the research. Schottky barrier height and Schottky-Mott rules are discussed. The current-voltage measurement and capacitance-voltage measurement are analyzed considering the role of the work function. We mainly focus on metal semiconductor contacts on molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). The properties of bulk and monolayer molybdenum disulfide are discussed. The differences between the bulk and monolayer, based on band gap structure theory, are presented. Utilizing the data obtained in the literature, the influence of temperature on the electrical properties of monolayer molybdenum disulfide are analyzed. In particular, the electrical properties of metals on MoS2 such …

Gamma-Ray Metallic Magnetic Calorimeters With Nbta Passive Persistent Switches And Electroformed Au Absorbers, Ruslan Hummatov Dec 2017

Gamma-Ray Metallic Magnetic Calorimeters With Nbta Passive Persistent Switches And Electroformed Au Absorbers, Ruslan Hummatov

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Metallic Magnetic Calorimeters (MMCs) are low temperature particle detectors which can be used for a wide range of applications including high-resolution γ -ray spectroscopy. High energy resolution in γ -ray spectroscopy is desired for Non Destructive Assay (NDA) of nuclear material and improved measurements of nuclear data. Our group has been developing γ -ray MMCs that should ultimately provide energy resolution more than an order of magnitude better than the benchmark detector technology, high purity germanium detectors (HPGe). Two components of these MMCs have been developed as a part of this dissertation: an on-chip passive superconducting persistent current switch and …

An Application Of M-Matrices To Preserve Bounded Positive Solutions To The Evolution Equations Of Biofilm Models, Richard S. Landry Jr. Dec 2017

An Application Of M-Matrices To Preserve Bounded Positive Solutions To The Evolution Equations Of Biofilm Models, Richard S. Landry Jr.

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In this work, we design a linear, two step implicit finite difference method to approximate the solutions of a biological system that describes the interaction between a microbial colony and a surrounding substrate. Three separate models are analyzed, all of which can be described as systems of partial differential equations (PDE)s with nonlinear diffusion and reaction, where the biological colony grows and decays based on the substrate bioavailability. The systems under investigation are all complex models describing the dynamics of biological films. In view of the difficulties to calculate analytical solutions of the models, we design here a numerical technique …

Underwater Acoustic Signal Analysis Toolkit, Kirk Bienvenu Jr Dec 2017

Underwater Acoustic Signal Analysis Toolkit, Kirk Bienvenu Jr

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This project started early in the summer of 2016 when it became evident there was a need for an effective and efficient signal analysis toolkit for the Littoral Acoustic Demonstration Center Gulf Ecological Monitoring and Modeling (LADC-GEMM) Research Consortium. LADC-GEMM collected underwater acoustic data in the northern Gulf of Mexico during the summer of 2015 using Environmental Acoustic Recording Systems (EARS) buoys. Much of the visualization of data was handled through short scripts and executed through terminal commands, each time requiring the data to be loaded into memory and parameters to be fed through arguments. The vision was to develop …

Automated Species Classification Methods For Passive Acoustic Monitoring Of Beaked Whales, John Lebien Dec 2017

Automated Species Classification Methods For Passive Acoustic Monitoring Of Beaked Whales, John Lebien

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Littoral Acoustic Demonstration Center has collected passive acoustic monitoring data in the northern Gulf of Mexico since 2001. Recordings were made in 2007 near the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that provide a baseline for an extensive study of regional marine mammal populations in response to the disaster. Animal density estimates can be derived from detections of echolocation signals in the acoustic data. Beaked whales are of particular interest as they remain one of the least understood groups of marine mammals, and relatively few abundance estimates exist. Efficient methods for classifying detected echolocation transients are essential for mining long-term passive …

Muon-Neutrino Electron Elastic Scattering And A Search For The Muon-Neutrino Magnetic Moment In The Nova Near Detector, Biao Wang Dec 2017

Muon-Neutrino Electron Elastic Scattering And A Search For The Muon-Neutrino Magnetic Moment In The Nova Near Detector, Biao Wang

Physics Theses and Dissertations

We use the NOvA near detector and the NuMI beam at Fermilab to study the neutrino-electron elastic scattering and the muon neutrino magnetic process beyond the Standard Model physics. The particle identifications of neutrino on electron elastic scattering are trained by using the multi-layer neural networks. This thesis provides a general discussion of this technique and shows a good agreement between data and MC for the neutrino-electron elastic weak scattering. By using 3.62e20 POT dataset in the NOvA near detector, we find 1.58e-9 Bohr magneton as the 90% C.L. upper limit. We also find a sensitivity of 8e-10 Bohr magneton …

Multiscale Imaging Of The Mouse Cortex Using Two-Photon Microscopy And Wide-Field Illumination, Jonathan Richard Bumstead Dec 2017

Multiscale Imaging Of The Mouse Cortex Using Two-Photon Microscopy And Wide-Field Illumination, Jonathan Richard Bumstead

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The mouse brain can be studied over vast spatial scales ranging from microscopic imaging of single neurons to macroscopic measurements of hemodynamics acquired over the majority of the mouse cortex. However, most neuroimaging modalities are limited by a fundamental trade-off between the spatial resolution and the field-of-view (FOV) over which the brain can be imaged, making it difficult to fully understand the functional and structural architecture of the healthy mouse brain and its disruption in disease. My dissertation has focused on developing multiscale optical systems capable of imaging the mouse brain at both microscopic and mesoscopic spatial scales, specifically addressing …

Structured Illumination Diffuse Optical Tomography For Mouse Brain Imaging, Matthew Reisman Dec 2017

Structured Illumination Diffuse Optical Tomography For Mouse Brain Imaging, Matthew Reisman

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As advances in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have transformed the study of human brain function, they have also widened the divide between standard research techniques used in humans and those used in mice, where high quality images are difficult to obtain using fMRI given the small volume of the mouse brain. Optical imaging techniques have been developed to study mouse brain networks, which are highly valuable given the ability to study brain disease treatments or development in a controlled environment. A planar imaging technique known as optical intrinsic signal (OIS) imaging has been a powerful tool for capturing functional …

Fast Monte Carlo Simulations For Quality Assurance In Radiation Therapy, Yuhe Wang Dec 2017

Fast Monte Carlo Simulations For Quality Assurance In Radiation Therapy, Yuhe Wang

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is generally considered to be the most accurate method for dose calculation in radiation therapy. However, it suffers from the low simulation efficiency (hours to days) and complex configuration, which impede its applications in clinical studies. The recent rise of MRI-guided radiation platform (e.g. ViewRay’s MRIdian system) brings urgent need of fast MC algorithms because the introduced strong magnetic field may cause big errors to other algorithms. My dissertation focuses on resolving the conflict between accuracy and efficiency of MC simulations through 4 different approaches: (1) GPU parallel computation, (2) Transport mechanism simplification, (3) Variance reduction, …

System Characterizations And Optimized Reconstruction Methods For Novel X-Ray Imaging, Huifeng Guan Dec 2017

System Characterizations And Optimized Reconstruction Methods For Novel X-Ray Imaging, Huifeng Guan

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In the past decade there have been many new emerging X-ray based imaging technologies developed for different diagnostic purposes or imaging tasks. However, there exist one or more specific problems that prevent them from being effectively or efficiently employed. In this dissertation, four different novel X-ray based imaging technologies are discussed, including propagation-based phase-contrast (PB-XPC) tomosynthesis, differential X-ray phase-contrast tomography (D-XPCT), projection-based dual-energy computed radiography (DECR), and tetrahedron beam computed tomography (TBCT). System characteristics are analyzed or optimized reconstruction methods are proposed for these imaging modalities. In the first part, we investigated the unique properties of propagation-based phase-contrast imaging technique …

System Optimization And Iterative Image Reconstruction In Photoacoustic Computed Tomography For Breast Imaging, Yang Lou Dec 2017

System Optimization And Iterative Image Reconstruction In Photoacoustic Computed Tomography For Breast Imaging, Yang Lou

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Photoacoustic computed tomography(PACT), also known as optoacoustic tomography (OAT), is an emerging imaging technique that has developed rapidly in recent years. The combination of the high optical contrast and the high acoustic resolution of this hybrid imaging technique makes it a promising candidate for human breast imaging, where conventional imaging techniques including X-ray mammography, B-mode ultrasound, and MRI suffer from low contrast, low specificity for certain breast types, and additional risks related to ionizing radiation. Though significant works have been done to push the frontier of PACT breast imaging, it is still challenging to successfully build a PACT breast imaging …

Investigation Of Neonatal Pulmonary Structure And Function Via Proton And Hyperpolarized Gas Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Nara Savoye Higano Dec 2017

Investigation Of Neonatal Pulmonary Structure And Function Via Proton And Hyperpolarized Gas Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Nara Savoye Higano

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a modality that utilizes the phenomenon of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to yield tomographic images of the body. Proton (1H) MRI has historically been successful in soft tissues but has suffered in the lung due to a variety of technical challenges, such as the low proton-density, rapid T2* relaxation time of the lung parenchymal tissue, and inherent physiological motion in the chest. Recent developments in radial ultrashort echo time (UTE) MRI have in part overcome these issues. In addition, there has been much progress in techniques for hyperpolarization of noble gases (3He and 129Xe) out …

Untangling The Mechanics Of Co-Entangled Cytoskeletal Networks, Shea Ricketts Dec 2017

Untangling The Mechanics Of Co-Entangled Cytoskeletal Networks, Shea Ricketts

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Active networks of interlinked protein filaments comprising the cytoskeleton largely control cellular mechanics and cell architecture. By forming cytoskeleton networks that combine motile, semiflexible actin with rigid, supportive microtubules, cells maintain structural integrity and shape while being able to flow and move. To elucidate the complex mechanical processes that arise between interacting networks of actin and microtubules within cells, we create a suite of randomly-oriented, well mixed networks of actin and microtubules by co-polymerizing varying ratios of both proteins in situ. We use optical tweezer microrheology in order to characterize the nonlinear mesoscale mechanics of in vitro co-entangled actin-microtubule composites. …

Three Experiments On Complex Fluids, Yang Liu Dec 2017

Three Experiments On Complex Fluids, Yang Liu

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The behaviour of complex fluids is fundamentally interesting and important in many applications. This thesis reports on three experiments on the thermal and rheological behaviour of complex fluids. The first is a study of the rheological properties of and heat transport in a saline solution of hydroxyethyl cellulose. This material has been used as a tissue phantom in testing the behavior of medical devices in MRI scanners. We find it behaves as a typical entangled polymer, and flows in response to local heating, such as could occur due to eddy-current heating of metallic devices in an MR scanner. We use …

Measurement Of The Prompt J/Psi Pair Production Cross Section In Pp Collisions At Sqrt(S) = 8 Tev With Cms, Grant Valentine Riley Dec 2017

Measurement Of The Prompt J/Psi Pair Production Cross Section In Pp Collisions At Sqrt(S) = 8 Tev With Cms, Grant Valentine Riley

Doctoral Dissertations

The cross section for the prompt production of J/ψ [J/Psi] meson pairs in proton-proton collisions at √ s[sqrt(s)] = 8 TeV at the LHC from a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.2±0.5 fb−1 [inverse femtobarns] has been measured with the CMS detector. It provides unique insight into particle production and proton structure in proton-proton (pp) collisions. The two J/ψ mesons are fully reconstructed in their µ +µ −[mu+ mu-] decay. An acceptance region is defined by the individual J/ψ transverse momentum pT J/ψ [J/Psi pT] and rapidity |y J/ψ| [J/Psi Rapidity]. The total fiducial cross section assuming unpolarized …

From Pyrochlore To The Tripod Kagome Lattice: Magnetism Of New Compound Family A2re3sb3o14 (A = Mg, Zn; Re = Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb), Zhiling Dun Dec 2017

From Pyrochlore To The Tripod Kagome Lattice: Magnetism Of New Compound Family A2re3sb3o14 (A = Mg, Zn; Re = Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb), Zhiling Dun

Doctoral Dissertations

Geometrical frustration refers to the inability of a complex system to satisfy all its competing interactions within an underlying topological constrained lattice. The two-dimensional kagome lattice is one of the most frustrated lattices and has been a favorite in the theoretical condensed matter community. However, the large variety of exotic states predicted in kagome lattices lies in contrast to a paucity of experimental systems, making new kagome lattice compounds highly desired.

In this dissertation, I shall provide a systematic study of the structural and magnetic properties of a new compounds family, A2RE3Sb3O14 (A = Mg, Zn; RE = Pr, Nd, …

Transport Of Water And Ions Through Single-Walled Armchair Carbon Nanotubes: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Michelle Patricia Aranha Dec 2017

Transport Of Water And Ions Through Single-Walled Armchair Carbon Nanotubes: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Michelle Patricia Aranha

Doctoral Dissertations

The narrow hydrophobic interior of a carbon nanotube (CNT) poses a barrier to the transport of water and ions, and yet, unexpectedly, numerous experimental and simulation studies have confirmed fast water transport rates comparable to those seen in biological aquaporin channels. These outstanding features of high water permeability and high solute rejection of even dissolved ions that would typically require a lot of energy for separation in commercial processes makes carbon nanotubes an exciting candidate for desalination membranes. Extending ion exclusion beyond simple mechanical sieving by the inclusion of electrostatics via added functionality to the nanotube bears promise to not …

Analysis Of Primary Stripper Foils At The Spallation Neutron Source By An Electron Beam Foil Test Stand, Eric Paul Barrowclough Dec 2017

Analysis Of Primary Stripper Foils At The Spallation Neutron Source By An Electron Beam Foil Test Stand, Eric Paul Barrowclough

Doctoral Dissertations

Diamond films are used at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) as the primary charge exchange foils (i.e., stripper foils) of the accelerated 1 GeV (Gigaelectron volts) hydride ions. The most common type of film used is a nanocrystalline diamond film, typically 17 mm x 45 mm (millimeter) with an aerial density of 350 μg/cm2 (microgram per square centimeter). The diamond film is deposited on a corrugated silicon substrate using plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition. After the growth of the diamond film, 30 mm of the silicon substrate is etched away, leaving a freestanding diamond foil with a silicon handle that …

Exploration Of Equal Tune Transverse Coupling In The Spallation Neutron Source Accumulator Ring, Robert Edward Potts Iii Dec 2017

Exploration Of Equal Tune Transverse Coupling In The Spallation Neutron Source Accumulator Ring, Robert Edward Potts Iii

Doctoral Dissertations

The development of hadron machines is one of the main areas of focus in accelerator technology and is specifically called out as a priority in the high energy physics 10-year plan[70]. The trend for future accelerators is to move towards very high-intensity high-power accelerators to be used as proton drivers for secondary particles, target stations, and high-energy accelerators. These accelerators require lower beam losses and more stringent beam controls to maintain typical loss levels and meet specific final beam distributions.

This study focuses on the recently documented coupling resonance in the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accumulator ring. It was previously …

Exterior Giant Planet Effects On Terrestrial Architecture, Anna Corinne Childs Dec 2017

Exterior Giant Planet Effects On Terrestrial Architecture, Anna Corinne Childs

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Terrestrial planet formation is a chaotic and violent process which is not fully understood. Prior to Kepler, Solar System observations were the basis for planet formation models. How- ever, Kepler observations have shown that exoplanet systems are very different from our solar system, thus requiring a more complete planet formation model. With advancements in com- putational ability, N-body integrators, and collision models, we can explore planet formation by experimenting with simulations in different parameter space. Our Solar System has shown us that exterior giant planets can play a vital role in the shaping of the final terrestrial planet system. Our …

Probing Broad Line Regions Of Active Galactic Nuclei, Champika Sandamali Weerasooriya Dec 2017

Probing Broad Line Regions Of Active Galactic Nuclei, Champika Sandamali Weerasooriya

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The broad line regions (BLR) of Type I Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are too small to be spatially resolved even with the most powerful telescopes available. Observations suggest that BLR gas is moving under the influence of the gravitational potential of the central supermassive black-hole (SMBH) and responds to the variations in the ionizing continuum flux of the accretion disk, giving rise to broad emission line variations with a time delay. Reverberation mapping campaigns seek to use this time variability to resolve the BLRs in the time domain instead of spatial domain, providing a way to infer geometry and kinematics …

A Case Study In The Application Of Model-Based Systems Engineering To Laboratory Research Science, Brad Crochet Dec 2017

A Case Study In The Application Of Model-Based Systems Engineering To Laboratory Research Science, Brad Crochet

Dissertations

This dissertation presents an exploration of the application of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools and methods to the design and execution of sophisticated laboratory experiments. An experiment to measure the first excited state diffusion coefficient, recently attempted by the author, is used as an example. Several MBSE analysis methods are applied, retrospectively, to the process by which the experiment in question was planned and executed. The potential for increased efficiency in managing the diverse types of information associated with such laboratory experiments is demonstrated, as well as possible further avenues for future research.

Development Of An Innovative Observational Astronomy Class For High School Students In Collaboration With The University Of Texas/Rio Grande Valley, Alan W. Hendrick

Theses and Dissertations

The vision presented by the National Academy of Science Standards is for all students to spend more time ‘doing’ science in order to develop science literacy and be better prepared not only for college but also in understanding and participation in global current events. A course in observational Astronomy is just that, an opportunity for student to “do ‘science by collaborating with actual scientists in real research. The course follows a path in which students learn foundational knowledge and apply this knowledge to complete a successful celestial observation, interpreting the results by making inferences and predictions. This paper begins with …

Star Formation Density And Galactic Outflows At Z~2, Matthew Coon Dec 2017

Star Formation Density And Galactic Outflows At Z~2, Matthew Coon

Theses and Dissertations

Galactic-scale outflows of gas play a significant role in galaxy evolution. They push gas to larger radii, slowing the star formation rate near the center of the galaxy, and increasing it at larger radii. Eventually, these outflows can expel the gas from the galaxy, depositing metals into the intergalactic medium, and limiting star formation in the galaxy. Galaxies from the Keck Baryonic Structure Survey (KBSS) and 3D- Hubble Space Telescope (3D-HST) Survey were used in order to measure the velocities of galactic outflows from the KBSS spectra, and the grism spectra from the 3D- HST survey were used in order …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Gas analysis is an important part of our world and gas sensing technology is becoming more essential for various aspects of our life. A novel approach for gas mixture analysis by using portable gas chromatography in combination with an array of highly integrated and selective metal oxide (MOX) sensors has been studied. We developed a system with small size (7 x 13 x 16 inches), low power consumption (~10 W) and absence of special carrier gases designed for portable field analysis (assuming apriori calibration). Low ppb and even sub-ppb level of detection for some VOCs was achieved during the analysis …

Numerical Investigation Of Drop Impingement On Dry And Wet Surfaces., Yisen Guo Dec 2017

Numerical Investigation Of Drop Impingement On Dry And Wet Surfaces., Yisen Guo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In-flight icing due to supercooled large droplets (SLDs) imposes great danger on aviation safety. Because of the large size, SLDs have different characteristics than typical cloud droplets that most icing encounters involve. As a result, SLDs more likely hit the wing surface and move into areas not protected by de-icing devices to form ice, which can lead to loss of lift, increase in drag, altered controllability, and eventually stall and loss of control of the aircraft. The phenomenon of droplet splashing is considered as the most important aspect of the SLD icing accretion problem. Although previous studies have established splashing …

On The Ground State And Evolution Of Structural And Transport Properties Of Tin Selenide, Yufei Liu Dec 2017

On The Ground State And Evolution Of Structural And Transport Properties Of Tin Selenide, Yufei Liu

All Dissertations

The recent surge of interest in tin selenide (SnSe) is due to the reported record-high thermoelectric figure of merit at elevated temperatures. While the researchers are exerting tremendous efforts to further improve the thermoelectric performance of SnSe via doping and nanostructuring, it is getting more and more apparent that SnSe is fascinating in many aspects of fundamental physics. SnSe is, in many aspects, an outlier of the current materials selection rules for high thermoelectric performance. Hence, answering why thermoelectric performance is high in SnSe should come before addressing how to further improve its thermoelectric performance. To this end, there are …
