Evidence For The Existence Of Two Stable Sites For Cobalt Impurity Atoms In Aluminum, Arun Venkatachar Aug 1971

Evidence For The Existence Of Two Stable Sites For Cobalt Impurity Atoms In Aluminum, Arun Venkatachar

Dissertations and Theses

Using Fe57Mössbauer spectroscopy, two alternative sites occupied by cobalt (10-4 at. % ) impurity atoms in aluminum have been isolated. The substitutional site A is the stable position after annealing the sample above 840 K, followed by a rapid quench. The impurity atoms in site A are characterized by a single line Mössbauer spectrum (indicative of a cubic environment), a room-temperature f = 0.502 (r. m. s. displ. 0.071 A) and an I. S. (reI. to Fe) = -0.421 mm/sec. For anneals below 770 K the cobalt atoms migrate to site B, which is characterized by a …

An Application Of Spectroscopic Techniques To The Measurement Of Electron Density And Temperature In A Brush Cathode Plasma, Ramabhai M. Patel Aug 1971

An Application Of Spectroscopic Techniques To The Measurement Of Electron Density And Temperature In A Brush Cathode Plasma, Ramabhai M. Patel

Physics Theses & Dissertations

A brief review of the Langmuir probe, microwave and spectroscopic techniques most commonly used to make measurements .of plasma electron temperature and density is presented. Of these various methods, certain spectroscopic methods are applied to the measurements of electron density and temperature in a helium brush cathode plasma. The density measurement is based on the manner in which a series of Stark broadened spectral lines merges into an apparent continuum before the normal series limit is reached. This approach met with only limited success in that the density could be determined only by extrapolating the data obtained. Primarily because of …

Crystal Structure Determination Of Β-Lactoglobulin From Electron Micrographs, Richard Roeter Jul 1971

Crystal Structure Determination Of Β-Lactoglobulin From Electron Micrographs, Richard Roeter

Dissertations and Theses

Often electron micrographs exhibit a repeating structure. Sometimes this repeating structure satisfies the definition of a crystal in that it has a three dimensional repeating structure. If the unit cell structure of this repeating structure can be determined it can be used to help categorize different sections of a particular sample. In some cases, the use of optical diffraction analysis of electron micrographs with repeating structure is a method of determining the unit cell structure.

Samples of β-Lactoglobulin were prepared for viewing in the electron microscope using both the crystalline material and carbon replicas of the crystal surface. Because the …

Data from the University of New Mexico High Energy Neutron Detector flown on NASA satellite OSO-VI arc analyzed with the aim of detecting neutrons from the sun. The detector is a proton recoil telescope capable of directional discrimination and responsive to neutrons of energies between 20 and 200 MeV with an effective average efficiency for this analysis of 10-4 and an effective area of 80cm2. The detector was located in a wheel compartment of OSO-VI and scanned the sun once per revolution of the wheel at a rate of 30 rpm. The satellite was launched on August …

Laser Induced Optical Modulation In Zinc Selenide, Donald Edward Everett Jul 1971

Laser Induced Optical Modulation In Zinc Selenide, Donald Edward Everett

Master's Theses

The experiments reported here with zinc selenide have a two-fold purpose. First, by using basically the same experimental set-up as Conway did, we are attempting to duplicate this LIMA using zinc selenide instead of cadium sulfide. Unlike his set-up, primarily one laser chopping frequency was used. Also, only one laser wavelength, 632.8 nanometers, was available, where Conway used lasers of wave lengths 647.1 nanometers and 530.8 nanometers. Another main difference is that in earlier works by Conway, laser pulse duration was of the order of 40 milliseconds, whereas the present duration is approximately 2.5 milliseconds. It was observed that the …

Increasing The Efficiency Of A Surface Ionization Mass Spectrometer, Thomas Curtis Adams Jul 1971

Increasing The Efficiency Of A Surface Ionization Mass Spectrometer, Thomas Curtis Adams

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

An Avco surface ionization mass spectrometer (model 90,000) was installed at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in February, 1968. Since that date this machine has been used as a production instrument for the isotopic analysis of uranium and plutonium samples. During 1969, it was realized that a problem inherent in the ionization mechanism of the instrument was degrading the accuracy of results, and that the number of man-hours expended in reducing data had become excessive. As soon as this situation became apparent, corrective action was initiated to reduce the effect of the ionization problem and to decrease the amount of …

Intensity Ratios For Polarized Refracted Light Near The Critical Angle., Stephanie Layne Moore May 1971

Intensity Ratios For Polarized Refracted Light Near The Critical Angle., Stephanie Layne Moore

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

It was undertaken to investigate the intensity ratio of refracted light polarized parallel and perpendicular to the plane of incidence. The primary object of the experiment was to obtain this ratio for light incident at very nearly the critical angle on a water-air interface, the light having first passed through the water. A laser was used to produce the light beam and the experimental results were compared with the theory propounded by Fresnel for infinite plane waves and elsewhere asserted to hold for bound plane waves. As this theory predicted a ratio of the square of the refractive index (n) …

Linear Pulsation Analysis Of Cluster Cepheid Variables, Charles E. Needham Apr 1971

Linear Pulsation Analysis Of Cluster Cepheid Variables, Charles E. Needham

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Models for thirteen classical Cepheids found in galactic clusters or associations are analyzed. The models are calculated using the most recently published photometric data and theoretical evolutionary tracks. The linearized equations of mass, momentum and energy conservation are solved subject to an infinitesimal radial perturbation of each equilibrium model. The equations are first solved in the adiabatic approximation. This solution is then used as the initial value for the iterative solution of the non-adiabatic equations. The linearized analysis provides information on pulsation periods of fundamental and harmonic modes, stability against pulsations and phase differences between various physical parameters, such as …

Spectroscopic Measurement Of The Electron Temperature In The Tenuous Argon Ion Laser Plasma, Dane Danijel Bicanic Apr 1971

Spectroscopic Measurement Of The Electron Temperature In The Tenuous Argon Ion Laser Plasma, Dane Danijel Bicanic

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The validity of the line intensity ratio technique for measuring the electron temperature was examined for an argon plasma with a "population inversion" i.e., the number of ions with electrons in the upper 4p levels was greater than in the lower 4s levels. The line intensities from these levels, the argon ion lasing transitions, were measured in a pulsed tenuous plasma at 110μ Hg produced by discharging a capacitor through a tube 2m long and 7mm inside diameter. The electron impact cross sections for simultaneous excitation and ionization as measured by Latimer and St. John were used and averaged over …

Photoionization Of Photoexcited Cesium, Robert E. Hebner Jan 1971

Photoionization Of Photoexcited Cesium, Robert E. Hebner

Doctoral Dissertations

"A new method for obtaining the cross section for photoionization of photoexcited cesium is presented. The salient feature of this experiment is to use three crossed beams, i.e., two light beams intersecting a beam of cesium atoms. The cross section is determined by counting the ions produced by the two step process: Cs (6S) + h[upsilon]₁ --> Cs (6P) ; Cs (6P) + [upsilon]₂ --> Cs⁺ + e⁻ The relative cross section for the second step has been obtained from threshold (5060 Å) to 2500 Å. The excitation light source used in obtaining this cross section was a rf resonance …

Absolute Cross Sections For Excitation Of Neon By Impact Of 20-180 Kev H , H₂ And He Ions, George William York Jan 1971

Absolute Cross Sections For Excitation Of Neon By Impact Of 20-180 Kev H , H₂ And He Ions, George William York

Doctoral Dissertations

"The technique of heavy-ion energy-loss spectrometry has been used to measure excitation cross sections for the (2p⁵)3s and (2p⁵)3p electronic configurations of Neon. The incident particles used were H⁺ , H⁺₂ and He⁺ at impact energies from 20-180 keV. The results are compared with previous optical measurements of the emission cross sections of lines from these levels as excited by H⁺ and He⁺ impact. Agreement is not good, either in shape or in absolute magnitude for excitation of the (2p⁵)3s configuration. However, agreement is surprisingly good for excitation of the (2p⁵)3p configuration. A curve fitting technique has been applied to …

MöSsbauer Studies Of Stable Interstitial And Substitutional Sites Of Cobalt In Gold, Charles Freeland Steen Jan 1971

MöSsbauer Studies Of Stable Interstitial And Substitutional Sites Of Cobalt In Gold, Charles Freeland Steen

Dissertations and Theses

Precision measurements of the Debye-Waller factor of Fe57 in Au using the wide black absorber technique have been made in the temperature range from room temperature to 830 K. The major source of error arises from Au Ly x-rays which are unresolved by the radiation detection system from the 14.4 KeV gamma ray. The K absorption edge of Br has been used to correct for the presence of x-rays.

These measurements have revealed the existence of two nonequivalent lattice sites which the Co57 impurity (parent of Fe57) may occupy. One of the sites has been …

X-Ray And Mössbauer Spectroscopy Studies Of The Silicon-Antimony And Bismuth-Antimony Alloys, James Ralph Teague Jan 1971

X-Ray And Mössbauer Spectroscopy Studies Of The Silicon-Antimony And Bismuth-Antimony Alloys, James Ralph Teague

Doctoral Dissertations

"X-ray and Mossbauer spectroscopy were used to investigate two antimony alloys, Bi-Sb and Si-Sb, showing semiconductorsemimetallic transitions or vice versa, depending on the antimony concentration in the host lattice. Resistivity and density measurements were found to be helpful in the analysis of the results. X-ray studies for dislocation-free antimony-doped silicon showed that the lattice constant of the alloy increased as the antimony concentration increased from 10¹⁸ to 10¹⁹ Sb atoms/cc. Rather good agreement was found between theoretical and experimental changes in lattice constant for dislocation-free silicon. Mössbauer studies showed that the isomer shift decreased linearly with increasing antimony concentration, which …

Theory Of Nucleation Of Water Properties Of Some Clathrate Like Cluster Structures, Mehdi Daee Jan 1971

Theory Of Nucleation Of Water Properties Of Some Clathrate Like Cluster Structures, Mehdi Daee

Doctoral Dissertations

"The tranquility of classical homogeneous nucleation theory has been disturbed by the introduction of statistical mechanical correction factors to a basically thermodynamic theory. These factors, which appear to be essential, destroy much of the agreement with experiment in the case of water vapor. A molecular model for the pre-nucleation water clusters is proposed with a view toward resolving some of these difficulties. As a first step, the Properties of a few specific cluster configurations have been examined. Clathrate-like structures containing 16 to 57 water molecules are discussed. The hydrogen bonds were treated as simple harmonic oscillators for the purpose of …

Homogeneous Nucleation Of Water Vapor In Inert Gas Atmospheres, Arthur Henry Biermann Jan 1971

Homogeneous Nucleation Of Water Vapor In Inert Gas Atmospheres, Arthur Henry Biermann

Doctoral Dissertations

"The homogeneous nucleation of water vapor in atmospheres of helium, neon, argon, krypton, and xenon was studied using an expansion type cloud chamber. A strong dependence of the nucleation rate on the particular inert carrier gas was observed. At present the only dependence upon the nature of the carrier gas included in classical nucleation theories is a small factor arising from kinetic considerations which is in the wrong direction to explain the observations. To explain the dependence of the rate on the nature of the carrier gas, a molecular cluster model is assumed allowing inert gas atoms to occupy the …

Surface Plasmon-Longitudinal Optical Phonon Contribution To The Reflectivity Of N-Type Insb, William Eugene Anderson Jan 1971

Surface Plasmon-Longitudinal Optical Phonon Contribution To The Reflectivity Of N-Type Insb, William Eugene Anderson

Doctoral Dissertations

"The reflectivity of n-type InSb has been measured in the far infrared. The doping of the samples was such that the free-carrier plasma frequency was near the longitudinal optical phonon frequency. The results suggest that samples with a sufficiently thick damage layer show effects due to surface plasmons. The results also indicate that the surface plasma excitations are coupled to the phonons. A simple model of this coupling is presented which agrees qualitatively with the observed reflectivity. A somewhat more rigorous theory of the coupling is also presented"--Abstract, page ii.

Thermal Expansivity And Refractive Index Determinations For Some Hydrosol Systems And Their Similarity To Properties Ascribed To "Anomalous" Water, Gerald Wayne Chappue Jan 1971

Thermal Expansivity And Refractive Index Determinations For Some Hydrosol Systems And Their Similarity To Properties Ascribed To "Anomalous" Water, Gerald Wayne Chappue

Masters Theses

"The characteristic thermal expansion and refractive index of aqueous dispersions of SiO₂ and NaOH were determined for samples contained in quartz micro-capillaries. Comparison is made with the expansivity and refractive properties of anomalous water or polywater as reported by other investigators. The similarity between the properties and behavior of various hydrosol systems and those ascribed to anomalous water is cited as a serious challenge to the hypothesized existence of an allotropic modification of water"--Abstract, page ii.
