A gradient annealing cell has been developed for the high-throughput study of thermalannealing effects on thin-film libraries in different environments. The inexpensive gradientannealing unit permits temperature gradients as large as 28 °C/mm and can accommodate samples ranging in length from 13 mm to 51 mm. The system was validated by investigating the effects of annealing temperature on the crystallinity, resistivity, and transparency of tin-doped indium oxide deposited on a glass substrate by magnetron sputtering. The unit developed in this work will permit the rapid optimization of materials properties such as crystallinity, homogeneity, and conductivity across a variety of applications.

Co–W alloy clusters with extended solubility of W in hcp Co were produced by inert-gas condensa-tion. The structural state of the as-deposited Co–W clusters was found to be critically dependent on processing parameters such as the cooling scheme and sputtering power. For the water-cooled clus-ters, the mean size and percent crystalline were strongly dependent on sputtering power, while the percent crystalline of the liquid nitrogen-cooled clusters was not as affected by the sputtering power. At low sputtering powers, the water-cooled clusters were predominantly amorphous, but became increasingly more crystalline as the sputtering power increased. The predominant crystalline phase was hcp …

A high-throughput high-sensitivity optical technique for measuringmagnetostriction of thin-film composition-spread samples has been developed. It determines the magnetostriction by measuring the induced deflection of micromachined cantilever unimorph samples. Magnetostrictionmeasurements have been performed on as-deposited Fe–Ga and Fe–Ga–Al thin-film composition spreads. The thin-film Fe–Ga spreads display a similar compositional variation of magnetostriction as bulk. A previously undiscovered peak in magnetostriction at low Ga content was also observed and attributed to a maximum in the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Magnetostrictive mapping of the Fe–Ga–Al ternary system reveals the possibility of substituting up to 8at.%Al in Fe70Ga30 without significant degradation of magnetostriction.

Electron and hole traps in N-doped ZnO were investigated using a structure of n+-ZnO:Al/i-ZnO/ZnO:N grown on a p-Si substrate by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (for growth of the ZnO:N layer) and sputtering deposition (for growth of the i-ZnO and n+-ZnO:Al layers). Current-voltage and capacitance-voltage characteristics measured at temperatures from 200 to 400 K show that the structure is an abrupt n+p diode with very low leakage currents. By using deep level transient spectroscopy, two hole traps, H3 (0.35 eV) and H4 (0.48 eV), are found in the p-Si …

Regular nanosized structures are considered to be promising materials for magnetic information storage media with high density of information. Recently attention was paid to static and dynamic magnetic properties arising from dimensional confinement in such nanostructures. Here we present an investigation of permalloy antidot arrays of different thicknesses. Thin permalloyfilms of thickness ranging from were deposited on nanoporous membranes with a pore size of . It was found that additional ferromagnetic resonance peaks appear for film thicknesses below , while films with larger thicknesses show resonanceproperties similar to continuous films. A comparison between the filmsdeposited onto Si wafers and porous …

We have fabricated Fe∕Sm–Co bilayers with gradient Fe thicknesses in order to systematically study the dependence of exchange coupling on the thickness of the Fe layer. The Fe layer was deposited at two different temperatures (150 and 300°C) to study the effect of deposition temperature on the exchange coupling. Magneto-optical Kerr effect and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) have been employed as nondestructive rapid characterization tools to map the magnetic properties of the gradient samples. Systematic enhancement in exchange coupling between the soft layer and the hard layer is observed as the soft layer thickness is decreased. Separate exchange couplings …

Textured films of molybdenum disulfide have been obtained by solid state reaction between the constituents in thin films form when a (200) oriented tungsten sheet is used as substrate. The crystallites have their c axis perpendicular to the plane of the substrate. The annealing conditions are T=1073K and t=30 min. The films are stoichoimetric and p type. Such highly textured films are achieved without foreign atom addition (Ni, Co...). It appears, as shown by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, that a thin WS2 layer is present at the interface W/MoS2. The crystallization process is discussed by a …
