The negative ion of cerium is investigated experimentally with tunable infrared laser photodetachment spectroscopy and theoretically with relativistic configuration interaction in the continuum formalism. The relative cross section for neutral atom production is measured with a crossed ion-beam–laser-beam apparatus over the photon energy range of 0.54–0.75 eV. A rich resonance spectrum is revealed near the threshold with, at least, 12 peaks observed due to transitions from bound states of [formula] to either bound or quasibound excited states of the negative ion. Theoretical calculations of the photodetachment cross sections enable identification of the transitions responsible for the measured peaks. Two of …

This project will examine inert fuels containing ZrO2 and MgO as the inert matrix. Ceramics with this inert matrix, Ce, U and eventually Pu will be synthesized and examined. While the Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative focus is on inert fuels with Pu as the fissile component, this task will perform initial laboratory experiments with Ce and U. The initial work with Ce will be performed early in the project with results used as a basis for U studies. Reactor physics calculations will be used to examine suitable quantities of burnable poisons from the candidate elements Gd, Er, or Hf. …

We have studied the spin-spin coupling between two f electrons of nonmagnetic Ce by means of spin-resolved resonant photoemission using circularly polarized synchrotron radiation. The two f electrons participating in the 3d5/2-->4f resonance process are coupled in a singlet while the coupling is veiled in the 3d3/2-->4f process due to an additional Coster-Kronig decay channel. The identical singlet coupling is observed in the 4d-->4f resonance process. Based on the Ce measurements, it is argued that spin-resolved resonant photoemission is one approach to study the correlation effects, particularly in the form of spin, in the rare earths.

This research report outlines the current status and progress associated with the electrochemical separation of Curium and Americium.

Data collection and analysis of the Ce3+/Ce4+ redox couple in various supporting electrolytes has continued. All electrolyte systems were investigated at Pt, Au, and Glassy Carbon working electrodes. Analysis of these data was accomplished by performing appropriate background subtractions to reveal net peaks due to Ce redox behavior. Successful identification of the Ce redox couple was achieved with all electrolyte/electrode systems, although a decline in peak resolution was observed with increasing acid concentration.
