The applicability of Coulomb dissociation reactions to determine the cross section for the inverse neutron capture reaction was explored using the reaction Li-8(gamma,n)Li-7. A 69.5 MeV/nucleon Li-8 beam was incident on a Pb target, and the outgoing neutron and Li-7 nucleus were measured in coincidence. The deduced (n,gamma) excitation function is consistent with data for the direct capture reaction Li-7(n,gamma) Li-8 and with low-energy effective field theory calculations.

Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Measurements Of Dealloyed Porous Nicu, Kyla Koboski, Evan Nelsen, Jennifer R. Hampton

Porous metals are of interest for their high surface area and potential for enhanced catalytic behavior. Electrodeposited NiCu thin films with a range of compositions were electrochemically dealloyed to selectively remove the Cu component. The film structure, composition, and reactivity of these samples were characterized both before and after the dealloying step using scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and electrochemical measurements. The catalytic behavior of the dealloyed porous Ni samples towards the hydrogen evolution reaction was measured and compared to that of the as-deposited samples. The Modular Neutron Array (MoNA) and 4 Tm Sweeper magnet were used to measure the free neutrons and heavy charged particles from the radioactive ion beam induced Mg-32 + Be-9 reaction. The fragmentation reaction was simulated with the constrained molecular dynamics model (CoMD), which demonstrated that the < N/Z > of the heavy fragments and free neutron multiplicities were observables sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry energy at subsaturation densities. Through comparison of these simulations with the experimental data, constraints on the density dependence of the symmetry energy were extracted. The neutron-unbound nucleus Be-15 was observed for the first time. It was populated using neutron transfer from a deuterated polyethylene target with a 59 MeV/u Be-14 beam. Neutrons were measured in coincidence with outgoing Be-14 particles and the reconstructed decay energy spectrum exhibits a resonance at 1.8(1) MeV. This corresponds to Be-15 being unbound by 0.45 MeV more then Be-16 thus significantly hindering the sequential two-neutron decay of Be-16 to Be-14 through this state.

Over the past 20 years, awards from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute have supported Hope's efforts to conduct STEM research and to prepare students to pursue careers as STEM researchers. The current program is building upon prior successes to create a deliberate pathway for students as they enter Hope as novices, build STEM Researcher skills through coursework and summer research and eventually become student leaders in STEM Research groups.

Vpt2+K Spectroscopic Constants And Matrix Elements Of The Transformed Vibrational Hamiltonian Of A Polyatomic Molecule With Resonances Using Van Vleck Perturbation Theory, Andreana M. Rosnik, William F. Polik

Vibrational levels of polyatomic molecules are analysed with Van Vleck perturbation theory to connect experimental energy levels to computed molecular potential energy surfaces. Vibrational matrix elements are calculated from a quartic potential function via second-order Van Vleck perturbation theory, a procedure that treats both weak and strong interactions among vibrational states by approximately block-diagonalising the vibrational Hamiltonian. A clear and complete derivation of anharmonic and resonance constants as well as general expressions for both on- and off-diagonal matrix elements of the transformed Hamiltonian is presented. AA systematic study of the radiative proton capture reaction for all stable nickel isotopes is presented. The results were obtained using 2.0–6.0 MeV protons from the 11-MV tandem Van de Graaff accelerator at the University of Notre Dame. The γ rays were detected by the NSCL-SuN detector utilizing the γ-summing technique. The results are compared to a compilation of earlier measurements and discrepancies between the previous data are resolved. The experimental results are also compared to the theoretical predictions obtained using the non-smoker and smaragd codes. Neutron decay spectroscopy has become a successful tool to explore nuclear properties of nuclei with the largest neutron-to-proton ratios. Resonances in nuclei located beyond the neutron dripline are accessible by kinematic reconstruction of the decay products. The development of two-neutron detection capabilities of the Modular Neutron Array (MoNA) at NSCL has opened up the possibility to search for unbound nuclei which decay by the emission of two neutrons. Specifically, this exotic decay mode was observed in16Be and 26O.
