Single crystals of thorium dioxide ThO2, grown by the hydrothermal growth technique, have been investigated by ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS), inverse photoemission spectroscopy (IPES), and L3, M3, M4, and M5 X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES). The experimental band gap for large single crystals has been determined to be 6 eV to 7 eV, from UPS and IPES, in line with expectations. The combined UPS and IPES, place the Fermi level near the conduction band minimum, making these crystals n-type, with extensive band tailing, suggesting an optical gap in the region …

The layered In4Se3 system does have a bulk band structure (i.e. discernible and significant band dispersion) perpendicular to the cleavage plane. Band widths (the extent of dispersion) of 300 meV or more are observed, for In-p and Se-p weighted bands within the valence region, and is indicative of a bulk band structure. Two-dimensionality of state is clearly not conserved, and there must exist interactions between layers sufficient to support a bulk band structure.

Cobaltocene Adsorption And Dissociation On Cu(1 1 1), Jaewu Choi, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

Photoemission results indicate that the initial adsorption of cobaltocene on Cu(1 1 1) at 150 K leads to molecular fragmentation, but with subsequent cobaltocene exposures, molecular absorption occurs. The molecularly adsorbed species is either adsorbed with only a fraction of molecules adopting a preferential orientation along the surface normal or adsorbed with the molecular axis away from the surface normal. This adsorption behavior is compared to nickelocene and ferrocene adsorption.
