A research consortium comprised of representatives from several universities and national laboratories has been established as part of this project to generate internal and external dose conversion coefficients for radionuclides produced in spallation neutron sources. Information obtained from this multi-year study will be used to support the siting and licensing of future accelerator-driven nuclear initiatives within the U.S. Department of Energy complex, including the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) Projects. Determination of these coefficients will also fill data gaps for several hundred radionuclides that exist in Federal Guide Report No. 11 and in Publications 68 …

Stainless steel 316L, titanium alloy grade 7, and alloy C22 are currently under consideration as candidate materials for use in various components associated with the spent nuclear fuel package, which must be designed to withstand structural deformation caused by static, thermal, and handling loads. In addition, it has to maintain its integrity in case of accidents, where it may be subjected to high loads over a very short period of time. The objective of this quality-affecting task is to evaluate the susceptibility of spent nuclear fuel cladding materials (zirconium alloys) to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), delayed hydride cracking (DHC) and localized corrosion (pitting/crevice) in simulated repository environments. During the first year of this project, major efforts were focused on developing the infrastructure for performing the desired testing involving two highly corrosion-resistant alloys namely, zircaloy-2 (Zr-2) and zircaloy-4 (Zr-4) in simulated concentrated acidic water (SAW) and modified SAW (SAWM). The analysis of mold filling and solidification continues with progress being made for the consideration of these two features within one model. Analysis of the induction heating process of an Induction Skull Melter (ISM) is under study. Efforts are underway to validate the modeling procedure and specific comparisons are being made to previously published work. Few detailed modeling results have been reported by other researchers, making the validations an important part of the overall modeling process. Internal and external dose coefficient values have been calculated for 14 anthropogenic radionuclides which are not currently presented in Federal Guidance Reports No. 11, 12, and 13 or Publications 68 and 72 of the International Commission on Radiological Protection. Internal dose coefficient values are reported for inhalation and ingestion of 1 μm and 5 μm particulates along with the f1 values and absorption types for the adult worker. The Xe 5s nondipole photoelectron parameter γ is obtained experimentally and theoretically from threshold to ∼200  eV photon energy. Significant nondipole effects are seen even in the threshold region of this valence shell photoionization. In addition, contrary to previous understanding, clear evidence of interchannel coupling among quadrupole photoionization channels is found.

We have measured the forward-backward asymmetry of photoelectron angular distributions produced in the vacuum ultraviolet photoionization of helium. This asymmetry, a consequence of the breakdown of the dipole approximation, measures the real part of the ratio of the quadrupole and dipole matrix elements. In the autoionization region, the strong energy dependence of the asymmetry permits an experimental separation of the ratio of those magnitudes from their phase difference. We experimentally determined the Fano parameters of the 2p21D2 quadrupole resonance, and report improved values of the width Γ and line profile parameter q from those previously available …

There are currently no models readily available that provide nucleon-nucleon spin dependent scattering amplitudes at high energies ( s ≥ 6 GeV2). This work aims to provide a model for calculating these high-energy scattering amplitudes. The foundation of the model is Regge theory since it allows for a relativistic description and full spin dependence. A parameterization of the amplitudes is presented. and comparisons of the solution to the assembled data set are shown. This research report develops a model to analyze the transport of americium from the melt to the vapor phase above the crucible. The model considers mass transport in the melt, vaporization at the surface, and transport through the vapor phase. The greatest problem with the model is the uncertainty of the thermodynamic properties of the proposed ternary alloy. The details of the model and the specific quantities needed for the physical properties will be discussed.

The objective of this project is the design and evaluation of manufacturing processes for transmuter fuel fabrication. The large-scale deployment of remote fabrication and refabrication processes will be required for all transmutation scenarios. Progress continues on the analysis of casting and solidification of the melt into molds. Modeling results for constant pressure casting, which is more realistic, have been obtained and produce physically realistic results for flow that starts, flows, and then eventually stops as it enters the mold. Potential mass transfer modeling features (Lammuir’s law for example) are being studied to enhance the capabilities of a mass transfer in a detailed system model. Measurments Of Correlated Pair Momentum Distributions In 3he(E,E'Pp)N With Clas, Rustam Niyazov

We have measured the 3He(e,e'pp)n reaction at 2.2 and 4.4 GeV over a wide kinematic range. The kinetic energy distribution for ’fast’ nucleons (p > 250 MeV/c) peaks where two nucleons each have 20% or less and the third or ‘leading’ nucleon carries most of the transferred energy. These fast nucleon pairs (both pp and pn) are back-to-back and carry very little momentum along q, indicating that they are spectators. Experimental and theoretical evidence indicates that we have measured N N correlations in 3He(e,e'pp)n by striking the third nucleon and detecting the spectator correlated pair.

The goal of the present research is to achieve a basic understanding of corrosion of steels by Lead Bismuth Eutectic (LBE). Liquid LBE is under consideration in the transmuter as both a spallation target and as a blanket coolant. There have been previous studies of LBE, especially by the Russians, who have over 80 reactor-years experience with LBE coolant in their Alpha-class submarine reactors. The Russians found that the presence of small amounts (ppm) of oxygen in the LBE significantly reduced corrosion. However, a fundamental understanding and verification of its role in the corrosion of steels is still very incomplete. …

We continue to get valuable data from sputter depth profiling of steel samples. We meet weekly to discuss progress. We took depth-profiling data on D9 steel that had been exposed to LBE. This the first time we have examined this type of steel. This is important because it will enable us to separate out two effects and determine their effect on corrosion: composition of the steel vs surface preparation.

The first step in any transmutation strategy is the separation of radionuclides in used nuclear fuel. The current separation strategy supporting the Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI) program is based on the use of a solvent extraction separation process to separate the actinides, fission products, and uranium from used commercial nuclear fuel, and on the use of pyrochemical separation technologies to process used transmuter fuels. To optimize the performance of accelerator driven transmutation systems (ADS), engineers will need to design the system to operate with a neutron multiplication factor just below that of a critical, or self-sustaining, system. This design criteria requires particle transport codes that instill the highest level of confidence with minimal uncertainty, because the larger the uncertainties in the codes, the larger the safety margin required in the design and the lower the efficiency of the ADS transmuter. For current design efforts, the MCNPX code is used to determine neutron production and transport for spallation neutron systems.

Dose coefficients permit simple determination of radiation dose associated with various exposure scenarios, and ultimately permit radiation safety personnel to assess the health risks to workers in a nuclear facility. Specifically, radiation safety personnel use dose coefficients to determine the radiation dose incurred to a tissue or organ system from a given exposure. These parameters are often expressed in terms of Annual Limits on Intake (ALIs) and Derived Air Concentrations (DACs).

The second year of this project involved modeling several aspects of the LANCSE beam experiments:

  • Modeling targets of varying diameter in air, in a vacuum, and in the presence of humid air;
  • Modeling various proton beam profiles;
  • Modeling the effects of off-axis proton beam impingement on the target;
  • Modeling the asymmetry introduced by the steel table below the target;
  • Modeling the effect of varying ratios of Pb to Bi and the effect of impurities; and
  • Modeling the system, including other structures within the test room.
