Phase Transitions In Copper Tellurides, N. N. Bikkulova, A. Kh. Kutov, G. R. Akmanova, A. R. Kurbangulov, D. I. Safargaliev, L. V. Tsygankova

Eurasian Journal of Physics and Functional Materials

This paper presents the results of model calculations of the structure of the Cu-Te system at low temperatures, as well as the results of a study of the structure and phase transitions of synthesized non-stoichiometric compounds of copper tellurides. For the first time, using the USPEX evolutionary algorithm, model computer calculations of the search for stable phases of copper tellurides Cu n Te m (n,m = 1÷10) were carried out. At temperature T = 0 K and pressure p = 1 atm. As stable structures, the compositions Cu5Te4, Cu3Te2, and Cu7 …

Eurasian Journal of Physics and Functional Materials

The article presents data on the study of the effect of substitutions of M-cations in the system of Na3Fe2(1-x)Sc2x(PO4)3 solid solutions (in the concentration range 0≤x≤0.06) on the crystal structure, ionic conductivity, and also on the temperature of phase transitions Ta→b, Tb→g. It is shown that samples of Na3Fe2(1-x)Sc2x(PO4)3 (0≤x≤0.06) solid solutions are monoclinically distorted, and the structure parameters increase linearly with increasing dopant concentration. Moreover, in the studied samples of solid solutions, an increase in the conductivity …

Fabrication Of Magnetocaloric La(Fe,Si)13 Thick Films, N H. Dung, N B. Doan, P De Rango, L Ranno, Karl G. Sandeman, N M. Dempsey

Publications and Research

La(Fe,Si)13–based compounds are considered to be very promising magnetocaloric materials for magnetic refrigeration applications. Many studies have focused on this material family but only in bulk form. In this paper we report on the fabrication of thick films of La(Fe,Si)13, both with and without post-hydriding. These films exhibit magnetic and structural properties comparable to bulk materials. We also observe that the ferromagnetic phase transition has a negative thermal hysteresis, a phenomenon not previously found in this material but which may have its origins in the availability of a strain energy reservoir, as in the cases of …

We characterize the properties of Ce1xYbxRhIn5 single crystals with 0 ⩽ x 1 using measurements of powder x-ray diffraction, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), and neutron diffraction. The Yb valence vYb, calculated from the magnetic susceptibility and measured using XANES, decreases from 3+ at x = 0 to ∼2.1+ at xact = 0.2, where xact is the measured Yb concentration. A transition from incommensurate to commensurate antiferromagnetism is observed in neutron diffraction measurements …

Engineering The Ground State Of Complex Oxides, Derek Joseph Meyers Jul 2015

Engineering The Ground State Of Complex Oxides, Derek Joseph Meyers

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Transition metal oxides featuring strong electron-electron interactions have been at the forefront of condensed matter physics research in the past few decades due to the myriad of novel and exciting phases derived from their competing interactions. Beyond their numerous intriguing properties displayed in the bulk they have also shown to be quite susceptible to externally applied perturbation in various forms. The dominant theme of this work is the exploration of three emerging methods for engineering the ground states of these materials to access both their applicability and their deficiencies.

The first of the three methods involves a relatively new set …

Thermodynamics Of Magnetic Multilayers, Tathagata Mukherjee Nov 2011

Thermodynamics Of Magnetic Multilayers, Tathagata Mukherjee

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Our interest in thermodynamics of magnetic thin film heterostructure began by exploring the possibility to use magnetic nanostructures in the search for optimized magnetocaloric materials for potential room temperature refrigeration. In the present thesis magnetic thin film heterostructures are experimentally realized by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) and Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). Co/Cr and Fe/Cr superlattices were fabricated using mean-field theoretical concepts as guiding principles. The potential of artificial antiferromagnets for near room-temperature refrigeration is explored. Magnetocaloric properties are deduced from measurements of the temperature and field dependence of the magnetization of our samples. The effects of intra-plane and inter-plane exchange …

Dynamics Of Phase Transitions On Low-Index Metal Surfaces, Bo Lin Apr 2003

Dynamics Of Phase Transitions On Low-Index Metal Surfaces, Bo Lin

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The surface superheating and phase transitions at the low-index surface of metal were investigated using conventional continuous and 100-ps time-resolved reflection high-energy electron diffraction. Three metal surfaces, In(111), Au(110) and Pb(111), have been investigated in this work. The high temperature behavior of the In(111) surface was investigated using reflection high-energy electron diffraction with 100-ps temporal resolution. The change of surface vacancy density on In(111) is observed from 300 K to near the bulk melting point. The vacancy-formation energy of In(111) surface is estimated from experimental results. The surface vacancy density is observed to increase with temperature; however, the average random …

Study Of A Growth Instability Of Γ-In[Sub 2]Se[Sub 3], C. Amory, J. C. Bernede, S. Marsillac

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

γ-In[sub 2]Se[sub 3] thin film are deposited for various substrate temperatures in the range of 523–673 K. This study shows that at 573 and 673 K the thin films are well crystallized with grains aligned along the c axis. Between these temperatures, a domain of instability appears where the γ-In[sub 2]Se[sub 3] thin films have a randomly orientation and the c-lattice parameter increases. The presence of the metastable phase κ-In[sub 2]Se[sub 3], during the growth, can explain the existence of this domain of instability. The insertion of Zn during the preparation process allows us to stabilize the phase κ at …
