Stability Of Cauchy's Equation On Δ+., Holden Wells Aug 2023

Stability Of Cauchy's Equation On Δ+., Holden Wells

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The most famous functional equation f(x+y)=f(x)+f(y) known as Cauchy's equation due to its appearance in the seminal analysis text Cours d'Analyse (Cauchy 1821), was used to understand fundamental aspects of the real numbers and the importance of regularity assumptions in mathematical analysis. Since then, the equation has been abstracted and examined in many contexts. One such examination, introduced by Stanislaw Ulam and furthered by Donald Hyers, was that of stability. Hyers demonstrated that Cauchy's equation exhibited stability over Banach Spaces in the following sense: functions that approximately satisfy Cauchy's equation are approximated with the same level of error by functions …

Unomaha Problem Of The Week (2021-2022 Edition), Brad Horner, Jordan M. Sahs Jun 2022

Unomaha Problem Of The Week (2021-2022 Edition), Brad Horner, Jordan M. Sahs

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

The University of Omaha math department's Problem of the Week was taken over in Fall 2019 from faculty by the authors. The structure: each semester (Fall and Spring), three problems are given per week for twelve weeks, with each problem worth ten points - mimicking the structure of arguably the most well-regarded university math competition around, the Putnam Competition, with prizes awarded to top-scorers at semester's end. The weekly competition was halted midway through Spring 2020 due to COVID-19, but relaunched again in Fall 2021, with massive changes.

Now there are three difficulty tiers to POW problems, roughly corresponding to …

Lattice Reduction Algorithms, Juan Ortega May 2022

Lattice Reduction Algorithms, Juan Ortega

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to propose and analyze an algorithm that follows
similar steps of Guassian Lattice Reduction Algorithm in two-dimensions and applying
them to three-dimensions. We start off by discussing the importance of cryptography in
our day to day lives. Then we dive into some linear algebra and discuss specific topics that
will later help us in understanding lattice reduction algorithms. We discuss two lattice
problems: the shortest vector problem and the closest vector problem. Then we introduce
two types of lattice reduction algorithms: Guassian Lattice Reduction in two-dimensions
and the LLL Algortihm. We illustrate how both …

Sequential Deformations Of Hadamard Matrices And Commuting Squares, Shuler G. Hopkins May 2022

Sequential Deformations Of Hadamard Matrices And Commuting Squares, Shuler G. Hopkins

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, we study analytic and sequential deformations of commuting squares of finite dimensional von Neumann algebras, with applications to the theory of complex Hadamard matrices. The main goal is to shed some light on the structure of the algebraic manifold of spin model commuting squares (i.e., commuting squares based on complex Hadamard matrices), in the neighborhood of the standard commuting square (i.e., the commuting square corresponding to the Fourier matrix). We prove two types of results: Non-existence results for deformations in certain directions in the tangent space to the algebraic manifold of commuting squares (chapters 3 and 4), …

Hidden Symmetries Of The Kepler Problem, Julia Kathryn Sheffler Jan 2022

Hidden Symmetries Of The Kepler Problem, Julia Kathryn Sheffler

Senior Projects Spring 2022

The orbits of planets can be described by solving Kepler’s problem which considers the motion due to by gravity (or any inverse square force law). The solutions to Kepler’s problem, for energies less then 0, are ellipses, with a few conserved quantities: energy, angular momentum and the Laplace-Runge-Lenz (LRL) vector. Each conserved quantity corresponds to symmetries of the system via N ̈other’s theorem. Energy conservation relates to time translations and angular momentum to three dimensional rotations. The symmetry related to the LRL vector is more difficult to visualize since it lives in phase space rather than configuration space. To understand …

On The Geometry Of The Multiplier Space Of ℓPA, Christopher Felder, Raymond Cheng Jan 2022

On The Geometry Of The Multiplier Space Of ℓPA, Christopher Felder, Raymond Cheng

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

For p ∊ (1, ∞)\ {2}, some properties of the space Mp of multipliers on ℓpA are derived. In particular, the failure of the weak parallelogram laws and the Pythagorean inequalities is demonstrated for Mp. It is also shown that extremal multipliers on the ℓpA spaces are exactly the monomials, in stark contrast to the p = 2 case.

Equisingular Approximation Of Analytic Germs, Aftab Yusuf Patel Dec 2021

Equisingular Approximation Of Analytic Germs, Aftab Yusuf Patel

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis deals with the problem of approximating germs of real or complex analytic spaces by Nash or algebraic germs. In particular, we investigate the problem of approximating analytic germs in various ways while preserving the Hilbert-Samuel function, which is of importance in the resolution of singularities. We first show that analytic germs that are complete intersections can be arbitrarily closely approximated by algebraic germs which are complete intersections with the same Hilbert-Samuel function. We then show that analytic germs whose local rings are Cohen-Macaulay can be arbitrarily closely approximated by Nash germs whose local rings are Cohen- Macaulay and …

Determining Quantum Symmetry In Graphs Using Planar Algebras, Akshata Pisharody May 2021

Determining Quantum Symmetry In Graphs Using Planar Algebras, Akshata Pisharody

Undergraduate Honors Theses

A graph has quantum symmetry if the algebra associated with its quantum automorphism group is non-commutative. We study what quantum symmetry means and outline one specific method for determining whether a graph has quantum symmetry, a method that involves studying planar algebras and manipulating planar tangles. Modifying a previously used method, we prove that the 5-cycle has no quantum symmetry by showing it has the generating property.

Lecture 14: Randomized Algorithms For Least Squares Problems, Ilse C.F. Ipsen Apr 2021

Lecture 14: Randomized Algorithms For Least Squares Problems, Ilse C.F. Ipsen

Mathematical Sciences Spring Lecture Series

The emergence of massive data sets, over the past twenty or so years, has lead to the development of Randomized Numerical Linear Algebra. Randomized matrix algorithms perform random sketching and sampling of rows or columns, in order to reduce the problem dimension or compute low-rank approximations. We review randomized algorithms for the solution of least squares/regression problems, based on row sketching from the left, or column sketching from the right. These algorithms tend to be efficient and accurate on matrices that have many more rows than columns. We present probabilistic bounds for the amount of sampling required to achieve a …

Lecture 02: Tile Low-Rank Methods And Applications (W/Review), David Keyes Apr 2021

Lecture 02: Tile Low-Rank Methods And Applications (W/Review), David Keyes

Mathematical Sciences Spring Lecture Series

As simulation and analytics enter the exascale era, numerical algorithms, particularly implicit solvers that couple vast numbers of degrees of freedom, must span a widening gap between ambitious applications and austere architectures to support them. We present fifteen universals for researchers in scalable solvers: imperatives from computer architecture that scalable solvers must respect, strategies towards achieving them that are currently well established, and additional strategies currently being developed for an effective and efficient exascale software ecosystem. We consider recent generalizations of what it means to “solve” a computational problem, which suggest that we have often been “oversolving” them at the …

Total Differentiability And Monogenicity For Functions In Algebras Of Order 4, I. Sabadini, Daniele C. Struppa

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper we discuss some notions of analyticity in associative algebras with unit. We also recall some basic tool in algebraic analysis and we use them to study the properties of analytic functions in two algebras of dimension four that played a relevant role in some work of the Italian school, but that have never been fully investigated.

A Gentle Introduction To Inequalities: A Casebook From The Fullerton Mathematical Circle, Adam Glesser, Matt Rathbun, Bogdan Suceavă Jan 2021

A Gentle Introduction To Inequalities: A Casebook From The Fullerton Mathematical Circle, Adam Glesser, Matt Rathbun, Bogdan Suceavă

Journal of Math Circles

Run for nearly a decade, the Fullerton Mathematical Circle at California State University, Fullerton prepares middle and high school students for mathematical research by exposing them to difficult problems whose solutions require only age-appropriate techniques and background. This work highlights one of the avenues of study, namely inequalities. We cover Engel's lemma, the Cauchy--Schwartz inequality, and the AM-GM inequality, as well as providing a wealth of problems where these results can be applied. Full solutions or hints, several written by Math Circle students, are given for all of the problems, as well as some commentary on how or when to …

Sum Of Cubes Of The First N Integers, Obiamaka L. Agu Dec 2020

Sum Of Cubes Of The First N Integers, Obiamaka L. Agu

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In Calculus we learned that 􏰅Sum^{n}_{k=1} k = [n(n+1)]/2 , that Sum^{􏰅n}_{k=1} k^2 = [n(n+1)(2n+1)]/6 , and that Sum^{n}_{k=1} k^{3} = (n(n+1)/2)^{2}. These formulas are useful when solving for the area below quadratic or cubic function over an interval [a, b]. This tedious process, solving for areas under a quadratic or a cubic, served as motivation for the introduction of Riemman integrals. For the overzealous math student, these steps were replaced by a simpler method of evaluating antiderivatives at the endpoints a and b. From my recollection, a former instructor informed us to do the value of memorizing these formulas. …

On The Global Operator And Fueter Mapping Theorem For Slice Polyanalytic Functions, Daniel Alpay, Kamal Diki, Irene Sabadini Nov 2020

On The Global Operator And Fueter Mapping Theorem For Slice Polyanalytic Functions, Daniel Alpay, Kamal Diki, Irene Sabadini

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper, we prove that slice polyanalytic functions on quaternions can be considered as solutions of a power of some special global operator with nonconstant coefficients as it happens in the case of slice hyperholomorphic functions. We investigate also an extension version of the Fueter mapping theorem in this polyanalytic setting. In particular, we show that under axially symmetric conditions it is always possible to construct Fueter regular and poly-Fueter regular functions through slice polyanalytic ones using what we call the poly-Fueter mappings. We study also some integral representations of these results on the quaternionic unit ball.

Numerical Computations Of Vortex Formation Length In Flow Past An Elliptical Cylinder, Matthew Karlson, Bogdan Nita, Ashwin Vaidya Sep 2020

Numerical Computations Of Vortex Formation Length In Flow Past An Elliptical Cylinder, Matthew Karlson, Bogdan Nita, Ashwin Vaidya

Department of Mathematics Facuty Scholarship and Creative Works

We examine two dimensional properties of vortex shedding past elliptical cylinders through numerical simulations. Specifically, we investigate the vortex formation length in the Reynolds number regime 10 to 100 for elliptical bodies of aspect ratio in the range 0.4 to 1.4. Our computations reveal that in the steady flow regime, the change in the vortex length follows a linear profile with respect to the Reynolds number, while in the unsteady regime, the time averaged vortex length decreases in an exponential manner with increasing Reynolds number. The transition in profile is used to identify the critical Reynolds number which marks the …

Spectral Sequences For Almost Complex Manifolds, Qian Chen Sep 2020

Spectral Sequences For Almost Complex Manifolds, Qian Chen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In recent work, two new cohomologies were introduced for almost complex manifolds: the so-called J-cohomology and N-cohomology [CKT17]. For the case of integrable (complex) structures, the former cohomology was already considered in [DGMS75], and the latter agrees with de Rham cohomology. In this dissertation, using ideas from [CW18], we introduce spectral sequences for these two cohomologies, showing the two cohomologies have natural bigradings. We show the spectral sequence for the J-cohomology converges at the second page whenever the almost complex structure is integrable, and explain how both fit in a natural diagram involving Bott-Chern cohomology and the Frolicher spectral sequence. …

On Product Of Smooth Neutrosophic Topological Spaces, Florentin Smarandache, Kalaivani Chandran, Swathi Sundari Sundaramoorthy, Saeid Jafari

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper, we develop the notion of the basis for a smooth neutrosophic topology in a more natural way. As a sequel, we define the notion of symmetric neutrosophic quasi-coincident neighborhood systems and prove some interesting results that fit with the classical ones, to establish the consistency of theory developed. Finally, we define and discuss the concept of product topology, in this context, using the definition of basis.

Exact And Strongly Exact Filters, M. A. Moshier, A. Pultr, A. L. Suarez Jul 2020

Exact And Strongly Exact Filters, M. A. Moshier, A. Pultr, A. L. Suarez

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

A meet in a frame is exact if it join-distributes with every element, it is strongly exact if it is preserved by every frame homomorphism. Hence, finite meets are (strongly) exact which leads to the concept of an exact resp. strongly exact filter, a filter closed under exact resp. strongly exact meets. It is known that the exact filters constitute a frame FiltE(L) somewhat surprisingly isomorphic to the frame of joins of closed sublocales. In this paper we present a characteristic of the coframe of meets of open sublocales as the dual to the frame of strongly exact filters FiltsE(L).

Geometry Across The Curriculum, Corey Dunn Jan 2020

Geometry Across The Curriculum, Corey Dunn

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy

This project is designed for a multicalculus class already familiar with computing the arc length of a parameterized curve in space. The activity asks the student to first recall basic facts about arc length, and then introduces the notion of measuring lengths of vectors differently, depending on where their initial point is. This is a foundational concept in metric differential geometry, and, this activity attempts to motivate this generalization of computing lengths of vectors through this arc length activity. The activity concludes with a short discussion of basic concepts of Lorentzian geometry, including the idea that lightlike vectors have length …

Neutrosophic theory has representatives on all continents and, therefore, it can be said to be a universal theory. On the other hand, according to the three volumes of “The Encyclopedia of Neutrosophic Researchers” (2016, 2018, 2019), plus numerous others not yet included in Encyclopedia book series, about 1200 researchers from 73 countries have applied both the neutrosophic theory and method. Neutrosophic theory was founded by Professor Florentin Smarandache in 1998; it constitutes further generalization of fuzzy and intuitionistic fuzzy theories. The key distinction between the neutrosophic set/logic and other types of sets/logics lies in the introduction of the degree of …

An Anatomical And Functional Analysis Of Digital Arteries, Katie Highsmith Apr 2019

An Anatomical And Functional Analysis Of Digital Arteries, Katie Highsmith

Student Scholar Showcase

Blood flow to the tissue of the hands and digits is efficiently regulated by vasoconstriction and vasodilation. Through a series of cadaveric dissection, we examined arteries in the hands and digits, including ulnar artery, radial artery, palmar arteries, and digital arteries, for their distribution (branching) patterns and morphological parameters (e.g., thickness, length between branches, external and internal diameters). Using data directly collected from three female cadavers as input variables to our mathematical model, we simulated vasoconstriction (-20% and -10% diameter) and vasodilation (+10% and +20 diameter) to evaluate the extent of changes in blood volume and flow within the arteries. …

In this paper, initially a matrix representation of Plithogenic Hypersoft Set (PHSS) is introduced and then with the help of this matrix some local operators for Plithogenic Fuzzy Hypersoft set (PFHSS) are developed. These local operators are used to generalize PFHSS to Plithogenic Fuzzy Whole Hypersoft set (PFWHSS). The generalized PFWHSS set is hybridization of Fuzzy Hypersoft set (which represent multiattributes and their subattributes as a combined whole membership i.e. case of having an exterior view of the event) and the Plithogenic Fuzzy Hypersoft set (in which multi attributes and their subattributes are represented with individual memberships case of having …

Neutrosophic Triplet Structures - Vol. 1, Florentin Smarandache, Memet Sahin

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Neutrosophic set has been derived from a new branch of philosophy, namely Neutrosophy. Neutrosophic set is capable of dealing with uncertainty, indeterminacy and inconsistent information. Neutrosophic set approaches are suitable to modeling problems with uncertainty, indeterminacy and inconsistent information in which human knowledge is necessary, and human evaluation is needed. Neutrosophic set theory was firstly proposed in 1998 by Florentin Smarandache, who also developed the concept of single valued neutrosophic set, oriented towards real world scientific and engineering applications. Since then, the single valued neutrosophic set theory has been extensively studied in books and monographs, the properties of neutrosophic sets …

I’M Being Framed: Phase Retrieval And Frame Dilation In Finite-Dimensional Real Hilbert Spaces, Jason L. Greuling Jan 2018

I’M Being Framed: Phase Retrieval And Frame Dilation In Finite-Dimensional Real Hilbert Spaces, Jason L. Greuling

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Research has shown that a frame for an n-dimensional real Hilbert space offers phase retrieval if and only if it has the complement property. There is a geometric characterization of general frames, the Han-Larson-Naimark Dilation Theorem, which gives us the necessary and sufficient conditions required to dilate a frame for an n-dimensional Hilbert space to a frame for a Hilbert space of higher dimension k. However, a frame having the complement property in an n-dimensional real Hilbert space does not ensure that its dilation will offer phase retrieval. In this thesis, we will explore and provide what necessary and sufficient …
