Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Abstract:The rapid advancement of machine learning techniques has revolutionized the field of medical diagnosis by offering powerful tools to analyze complex data sets and make accurate predictions. In this proposed method, we present a novel approach that integrates machine learning and optimization models to enhance the accuracy of medical diagnoses. Our method focuses on fine-tuning and optimizing the parameters of machine learning algorithms commonly used in medical diagnosis, such as logistic regression, support vector machines, and neural networks. By employing optimization techniques, we systematically explore the parameter space of these algorithms to discover the most optimal configurations. Moreover, by representing …

The Negative Stigma Surrounding Mathematics, Marissa A. Greisen Nov 2023

The Negative Stigma Surrounding Mathematics, Marissa A. Greisen

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

There is a negative stigma that surrounds mathematics in our education system. It is important to bring notice to this for the benefit of future students. There is a lot of research claiming that math is looked down on, but they do not answer why, or what we can do to fix it. Why is there a greater negative stigma around math and not other subjects? What roles to teachers, parents, and peers play in this stigma? In this article, I created a survey for people to answer questions regarding their opinion on math, who they believe typically does well …

Time As A Line: Helping Children Make Abstract Ideas Concrete, Rachel Mae Stenner Oct 2023

Time As A Line: Helping Children Make Abstract Ideas Concrete, Rachel Mae Stenner

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

This is a math education project that included research, a lesson plan, and actual in the classroom work with students. Under the advisement of Dr. Rebecca Borowski, I looked into how time, an abstract idea, is taught to young children who are just starting to learn what measurement is, and examined how teachers can better teach time as a more concrete topic. This focused on the idea of turning the abstract time concepts that are thrown at children into the more abstract ideas of both circular and then linear number lines, using physical materials to help guide the process.

“Math Talks Are Like An Alarm Clock Waking You Up”: Language’S Crucial Role In Mathematics, Gabriella M. Wasser

Journal of Practitioner Research

Whole group math talks, or number talks, are a common practice to get students talking about their own understanding of mathematical concepts. The purpose of this study was to implement math talks in small group settings to see what would happen, specifically to students’ conceptual understanding as well their general perceptions of math talks. This study took place in a fourth-grade math classroom, and math talks were implemented with the whole class for a week and then moved to small groups for the remaining three weeks of the study. During the study, a pre-and post-assessment was given, field notes were …

Proving Dirichlet's Theorem On Arithmetic Progressions, Owen T. Abma Aug 2022

Proving Dirichlet's Theorem On Arithmetic Progressions, Owen T. Abma

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

First proved by German mathematician Dirichlet in 1837, this important theorem states that for coprime integers a, m, there are an infinite number of primes p such that p = a (mod m). This is one of many extensions of Euclid’s theorem that there are infinitely many prime numbers. In this paper, we will formulate a rather elegant proof of Dirichlet’s theorem using ideas from complex analysis and group theory.

For The Women Who Wear Pi Day Shirts, Jacqui Weaver

Honors College

This project, entitled To The Women Who Wear Pi Day Shirts, is a poetry manuscript that explores a journey of a women in STEM. While taking college English courses, I read about characters such as the creature in Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, who had intelligence, yet was physically hideous, an outsider from the human population. The creature was an outsider to the normal human, much like how I feel as a woman in STEM, which gave me the idea to write about my own journey. The poetry in this manuscript is a reflection from being in elementary school learning mathematics …

Symmetric Presentations Of Finite Groups And Related Topics, Samar Mikhail Kasouha

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

A progenitor is an infinite semi-direct product of the form m∗n : N, where N ≤ Sn and m∗n : N is a free product of n copies of a cyclic group of order m. A progenitor of this type, in particular 2∗n : N, gives finite non-abelian simple groups and groups involving these, including alternating groups, classical groups, and the sporadic group. We have conducted a systematic search of finite homomorphic images of numerous progenitors. In this thesis we have presented original symmetric presentations of the sporadic simple groups, M12, J1 as homomorphic images of the progenitor 2∗12 : …

How To Guard An Art Gallery: A Simple Mathematical Problem, Natalie Petruzelli Apr 2022

How To Guard An Art Gallery: A Simple Mathematical Problem, Natalie Petruzelli

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

The art gallery problem is a geometry question that seeks to find the minimum number of guards necessary to guard an art gallery based on the qualities of the museum’s shape, specifically the number of walls. Solved by Václav Chvátal in 1975, the resulting Art Gallery Theorem dictates that ⌊n/3⌋ guards are always sufficient and sometimes necessary to guard an art gallery with n walls. This theorem, along with the argument that proves it, are accessible and interesting results even to one with little to no mathematical knowledge, introducing readers to common concepts in both geometry and graph …

Exploration Of Piccirillo's Trick On Low Crossing Number Knots, Gabriel Adams Mar 2022

Exploration Of Piccirillo's Trick On Low Crossing Number Knots, Gabriel Adams

Honors Theses

Piccirillo recently discovered a process that can be applied to an unknotting number one knot to convert it into a different knot called a Piccirillo dual. Piccirillo duals have been shown to have the same n-trace and the same sliceness. However, exploration and knowledge of this process is limited. We were able to generate the Piccirillo duals for several low-crossing number knots. We offer the foundation for and explain how to follow the Piccirillo process and generate Piccirillo duals. This talk assumes little knowledge of knot theory and concisely gives newcomers a clear introduction to get started working with Piccirillo …

An Integration Of Art And Mathematics, Henry Jaakola Jan 2022

An Integration Of Art And Mathematics, Henry Jaakola

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Mathematics and art are seemingly unrelated fields, requiring different skills and mindsets. Indeed, these disciplines may be difficult to understand for those not immersed in the field. Through art, math can be more relatable and understandable, and with math, art can be imbued with a different kind of order and structure. This project explores the intersection and integration of math and art, and culminates in a physical interdisciplinary product. Using the Padovan Sequence of numbers as a theoretical basis, two artworks are created with different media and designs, yielding unique results. Through these pieces, the order and beauty of number …

Quasipositive Braids And Ribbon Surfaces, Rachel Snyder Apr 2021

Quasipositive Braids And Ribbon Surfaces, Rachel Snyder

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

Meant to serve as an accessible exploration of knot theory for undergraduates and those without much experience in topology, this paper will start by exploring the basics of knot theory and will work through investigating the relationships between knots and surfaces, ending with an analysis of the relationship between quasipositive braids and surfaces in 4-space. We will begin by defining a knot and introducing the ways in which we are able to manipulate them. Following that, we will explore the basics of surfaces, building up to a proof that all surfaces are homeomorphic to a series of disks and bands …

(NLP/NLU) tasks. In this thesis, we focus on identifying paraphrases at the sentence level using

the network Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT). It is well

understood that in deep learning the volume and quality of training data is a determining factor

of performance. The objective of …

Tournaments And A Fibonacci Link, Michael Long, Daniela Genova Apr 2020

Tournaments And A Fibonacci Link, Michael Long, Daniela Genova

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Round robin tournaments are a type of directed graphs with applications to athletic competitions and transportation logistics. The presentation begins with a brief series of informative theorems and properties of directed graphs, which are imperative to our understanding of the properties that make directed graphs (and, subsequently, round robin tournaments) uniquely interesting. We then present a number of results about the properties of tournaments (defined as a complete directed graph), including transitivity–a relatively uncommon property used to determine domination in a round robin tournament–and connectivity, which can most often be seen in determining means of transportation between any two locations. …

Predator-Prey Model With Herding Behavior And Hunting Quota, Randy Lee, Mahbubar Rahman Phd Apr 2020

Predator-Prey Model With Herding Behavior And Hunting Quota, Randy Lee, Mahbubar Rahman Phd

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

The Lotka-Volterra predator-prey model is widely studied and used in many disciplines such as biology, ecology and economics. It is used to describe the growth and coexistence of two interacting populations. The model consists of a pair of first-order nonlinear differential equations. In this paper, we studied steady states, stability of steady states, existence of limit cycles, and bifurcation behavior of the predator-prey model by modifying the existing model with hunting quota. We also illustrated our results with numerical simulations.
