Evaluation Of Harvesting Time For Industrial Hemp (Cannabis Sativa L,) Pilot Project Varieties Grown In South Florida, Jordan W. Prats
Evaluation Of Harvesting Time For Industrial Hemp (Cannabis Sativa L,) Pilot Project Varieties Grown In South Florida, Jordan W. Prats
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A field study was conducted to observe the natural development of cannabinoids in three daylength sensitive industrial hemp varieties Bubba Kush (BK), Emerald Flower (EF), and Golden Sunset (GS). Plants were configured in a randomized block design with 3 replications. Once 50% of the plants within a variety reached reproductive growth, plants were sampled weekly until senescence and analyzed through a HPLC-UV/DAD. The results from the study indicate that all three varieties of industrial hemp tested in field study reached reproductive growth within the first week of transplanting. This is due to a 12-hour day-length at the time and the …
Competitive Reductive Removal Of Chromate And Pertechnetate Via Zero-Valent Iron, Jonathan Williams Ramirez
Competitive Reductive Removal Of Chromate And Pertechnetate Via Zero-Valent Iron, Jonathan Williams Ramirez
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Treatment to immobilize radioactive waste is of concern for long-term storage, avoiding future environmental exposure. Most production of Technetium-99 (99Tc) occurred as a byproduct of development of legacy nuclear weapons research. Zero-valent iron (ZVI) is a promising reductant of Tc(VII) to a less mobile 99Tc(IV). However, more redox-sensitive contaminants can compete in the reductive process. Therefore, it is important to examine the effects of competitive contaminants and quantify the effects on the reductive removal rates of 99Tc. Chromate, Cr(VI), is a redox-sensitive contaminant that is expected to be present in legacy waste present in the Hanford …

Connections In The Underworld: A Morphological And Molecular Study Of Diversity And Connectivity Among Anchialine Shrimp., Robert Eugene Ditter
Connections In The Underworld: A Morphological And Molecular Study Of Diversity And Connectivity Among Anchialine Shrimp., Robert Eugene Ditter
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research investigates the distribution and population structure of crustaceans, endemic to anchialine systems in the tropical western Atlantic focusing on cave-dwelling shrimp from the family Barbouriidae. Taxonomic and molecular tools (genetic and genomic) are utilized to examine population dynamics and the presence of phenotypic hypervariation (PhyV) of the critically endangered species Barbouria cubensis (von Martens, 1872). The presence of PhyV and its geographic distribution is investigated among anchialine populations of B. cubensis from 34 sites on Abaco, Eleuthera, and San Salvador, Bahamas. Examination of 54 informative morphological characters revealed PhyV present in nearly 90% (n=463) of specimens with no …
Enhancing Algal Biomass And Lipid Production Through Bacterial And Fungal Co-Culture, Erwin David Berthold
Enhancing Algal Biomass And Lipid Production Through Bacterial And Fungal Co-Culture, Erwin David Berthold
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the effects of co-culturing microorganisms including 37 yeast, 38 bacteria, nine diazotrophic cyanobacteria, and three fungi on biomass and lipid production in fresh- and saltwater algae. Algal lipid content was measured using Nile Red method and gravimetric techniques. Among the algal strains tested, freshwater Coelastrum sp. 46-4, and saltwater Cricosphaera sp. 146-2-9, showed enhanced biomass yield and lipid content in response to co-culture with bacteria, cyanobacteria, and fungi. While co-culture with yeast caused inhibition of algal productivity, no difference in algal productivity was observed between nitrogen-free diazotrophic cyanobacterial co-culture and nitrogen-replete monoalgal culture. Results indicated that extracellular …
Mangiferin As A Biomarker For Mango Anthracnose Resistance, Herma Pierre
Mangiferin As A Biomarker For Mango Anthracnose Resistance, Herma Pierre
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mangos (Mangifera indica L.) are tropical/subtropical fruits belonging to the plant family Anacardiaceae. Anthracnose is the most deleterious disease of mango both in the field and during postharvest handling. It is most commonly caused by the Colletotrichum gloeosporioides complex. Mangiferin, a xanthanoid compound found in at least twelve plant families worldwide (Luo et al., 2012), is present in large amounts of the leaves and edible mangos. Even though this compound plays a pivotal role in the plant’s defense against biotic and abiotic stressors, no correlations been made between the compound and mango anthracnose resistance.
Mangos were collected, grouped …
Exploring The Use Of Everglades Agricultural Area Canal Water As Base Medium For The Mass Production Of Algae For Biofuels, Nina N. De La Rosa
Exploring The Use Of Everglades Agricultural Area Canal Water As Base Medium For The Mass Production Of Algae For Biofuels, Nina N. De La Rosa
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Freshwater use is a major concern in the mass production of algae for biofuels. This project examined the use of canal water obtained from the Everglades Agricultural Area as a base medium for the mass production of algae. This water is not suitable for human consumption, and it is currently used for crop irrigation. A variety of canals were found to be suitable for water collection. Comparison of two methods for algal production showed no significant difference in biomass accumulation. It was discovered that synthetic reticulated foam can be used for algal biomass collection and harvest, and there is potential …
Wildfire Assessment Using Farsite Fire Modeling: A Case Study In The Chihuahua Desert Of Mexico, John Brakeall
Wildfire Assessment Using Farsite Fire Modeling: A Case Study In The Chihuahua Desert Of Mexico, John Brakeall
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Chihuahua desert is one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in the world, but suffers serious degradation because of changes in fire regimes resulting in large catastrophic fires. My study was conducted in the Sierra La Mojonera (SLM) natural protected area in Mexico. The purpose of this study was to implement the use of FARSITE fire modeling as a fire management tool to develop an integrated fire management plan at SLM.
Firebreaks proved to detain 100% of wildfire outbreaks. The rosetophilous scrub experienced the fastest rate of fire spread and lowland creosote bush scrub experienced the slowest rate of …
Analysis Of Fractured Terrain Using Remote Sensing And Geographic Information Systems : Establishing A Correlation Between Fracture Network Properties And Vegetation, Sumanjit Aich
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research analyzed the spatial relationship between a mega-scale fracture network and the occurrence of vegetation in an arid region. High-resolution aerial photographs of Arches National Park, Utah were used for digital image processing. Four sets of large-scale joints were digitized from the rectified color photograph in order to characterize the geospatial properties of the fracture network with the aid of a Geographic Information System. An unsupervised landcover classification was carried out to identify the spatial distribution of vegetation on the fractured outcrop. Results of this study confirm that the WNW-ESE alignment of vegetation is dominantly controlled by the spatial …

Development And Evaluation Of A Geographic Information System Based Method To Estimate Flooding Susceptibility In An Area Of Broward County, Florida, Carolyn J. Anderson
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study was to develop a GIS-based multi-class index overlay model to determine areas susceptible to inland flooding during extreme precipitation events in Broward County, Florida. Data layers used in the method include Airborne Laser Terrain Mapper (ALTM) elevation data, excess precipitation depth determined through performing a Soil Conservation Service (SCS) Curve Number (CN) analysis, and the slope of the terrain. The method includes a calibration procedure that uses "weights and scores" criteria obtained from Hurricane Irene (1999) records, a reported 100-year precipitation event, Doppler radar data and documented flooding locations. Results are displayed in maps of …
Investigation Into Possible Causes Of Elevated Ozone Concentrations In Miami, Florida, Dale E. Aspy
Investigation Into Possible Causes Of Elevated Ozone Concentrations In Miami, Florida, Dale E. Aspy
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ozone readings which exceeded the National Ambient Air Quality Standard of 120 ppbv were recorded in Miami, Florida during 1978 and 1980. Similar elevated concentrations of ozone extended across upper Florida and into the Southeastern portion of the United States. It is concluded that tropospheric transport of ozone into the Miami area occurs. This conclusion is supported by lead analyses of atmospheric samples taken in Miami and by isentropic trajectories. Six case studies are presented. In all cases transport of ozone into Florida appears to occur. In only four of the cases does this result in elevated ozone levels in …
