Lower Bound on Preserved Flood Duration in Fluvial Bedform Stratigraphy (experimental dataset)
This data is collected to assess the role of hydrograph timescale relative to dune migration on the preservation of cross sets in the stratigraphic record. The data presented here are of dune evolution under steady-state conditions, as well as three hydrographs of the same magnitude but varying timescales.
Methodology:
We collected data from four experiments tracking bedform evolution in a 22-m-long, 0.56-m-wide, 0.9-m-deep flume at the University of New Orleans Dynamics of Sedimentation laboratory. We conducted an equilibrium experiment (discharge value 0.027 m3/s) and three flood experiments, which were characterized by a symmetrical flood wave. In all flood experiments, the …

Rainbow Beach Sediment Grain Size Analysis, Northampton, Massachusetts, Brian Yellen
Data and Datasets
This dataset was prepared by Brian Yellen, a research assistant professor in the Department of Earth, Geographic, and Climate Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Dr. Yellen worked in conjunction with Melissa Grader of the USFWS and colleagues to conduct the associated field sampling.
This report provides information related to the substrate grain size at surveyed locations on Rainbow Beach on the Connecticut River in Northampton, MA (42.322125, -72.584928). This location is a known breeding site of the endangered puritan tiger beetle (PTB), Ellipsoptera puritana.

Hydrodynamics And Sediment Transport In The Tidally Influenced James River, Ollie Gilchrest, Rip Hale
Hydrodynamics And Sediment Transport In The Tidally Influenced James River, Ollie Gilchrest, Rip Hale
The Graduate School Posters
The tidally influenced James River is an important economic, ecologic, and cultural resource for VA residents. Tidal rivers have been historically understudied, however they are critical transition zones, the dynamics of which have implications for freshwater supply and sediment trapping. Globally, estimates suggest that >30% of fluvial sediment is trapped in the tidal zone, the location and dynamics of which are actively changing due to sea level rise and saltwater encroachment. In addition, analysis of historical water levels on the James River has shown a decrease in the tidal range since 1940. The present study combines >1-year’s worth of hydrographic …

Geology, Soils And Climate Of Western Australia's Wine Regions, Peter J. Tille, Angela Stuart-Street, Peter S. Gardiner
Bulletins 4000 -
This bulletin details what is special and unique about the geology, soil and climate of the south-west of Western Australia (WA), an area that encompasses the state’s 9 wine regions.
We have arranged the information into 2 parts:
- In Part 1, we broadly describe the special geological, soil and climate features of the south-west of WA to provide context for the wine regions.
- In Part 2, we describe the geology, soil and climate of the regions and subregions of the Geographical Indications (GI) scheme (administered by Wine Australia) for WA.
Through this work we have found that the wine regions …
Freshwater Tidal Wetland Sediment Flux In The Hudson River, Ny, Kelly Mckeon, Jonathan Woodruff
Freshwater Tidal Wetland Sediment Flux In The Hudson River, Ny, Kelly Mckeon, Jonathan Woodruff
Data and Datasets
This study primarily used a 16-year tidal flux dataset generated by the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve (HRNERR) to generate highly detailed sediment budgets for two freshwater tidal wetlands in the Hudson River. Throughout this dataset, Tivoli North Bay is a marsh and files associated with it will be labeled TVN. Tivoli South Bay is a mudflat and files associated with this bay will be labelled TVS. The HRNERR dataset is publicly available through their centralized data management office at cdmo.baruch.sc.edu. To supplement the publicly available water level, turbidity, and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) data, we deployed additional current …

Massachusetts Beach Grain Size And Slope Data, Jonathan Woodruff, Nicholas Venti, Stephen Mabee, Alycia Ditroia, Douglas Beach
Data and Datasets
This data repository contains grain size and beach face slope data from approximately 100 paired summer and winter transects collected along 18 separate beaches in southern New England. The study is focused to beaches of Massachusetts, which represents a particularly unique section of the Northeastern US coast in that it: 1) lies at the interface between New England’s paraglacial lowlands and Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain, 2) spans both micro- and meso- tidal regimes, 3) encompasses a wide range of seasonally varying wave conditions, and 4) contains a diverse array of geomorphic and grain size characteristics. Between 2 and 10 intertidal transects …
Hudson River Estuary Tidal Marsh Sediment Data, Brian Yellen, Jonathan Woodruff
Hudson River Estuary Tidal Marsh Sediment Data, Brian Yellen, Jonathan Woodruff
Data and Datasets
This repository contains data from sediment cores collected at six tidal wetland complexes that are located within the Hudson River Estuary. The sites include Stockport Marsh, Esopus Delta, Tivoli North Bay, Tivoli South Bay, Vanderburgh Cove, and Iona Island Marsh. A variety of core collection tools and methods were used to collect uncompacted records, including gouge coring, Russian peat coring, and piston push coring, with the method determined by coring environment. The general workflow for cores included (1) splitting; (2) Itrax XRF scanning; (3) subsampling cores ~10 cm spacing; (4) drying and burning samples for percent water, organic, and mineral …

Acoustic Geology Of A Portion Of Virginia's Innermost Continental Shelf, Carl H. Hobbs Iii
Acoustic Geology Of A Portion Of Virginia's Innermost Continental Shelf, Carl H. Hobbs Iii
VIMS Books and Book Chapters
Side-scan sonography of the innermost continental shelf between Cape Henry and the Virginia-North Carolina border depicts a relatively typical inner shelf bottom generally characterized by medium density, meso-scale roughness. Subbottom acoustic protiles depict the stratigraphy as a Tertiary age basement separated from Quatenary-age deposits by a regional, angular(?) unconformity. Holocene-age sediments form a discontinuous layer above another unconformity. The area's topography appears to be a function of the presence of the modern sediments.
