Scalable Solution Processing Of Niox Nanoparticles., Peter James Armstrong
Scalable Solution Processing Of Niox Nanoparticles., Peter James Armstrong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are a promising alternative to silicon-based photovoltaics. However, PSCs face several challenges due to shortcomings in their stability, module efficiency, and scaled production. Although PSCs is still a young field of research, significant attention has been given to demonstrating power conversion efficiencies that are on par with traditional silicon. With that target reached, converting the laboratory demonstration into practical materials to increase access and abundance of solar energy are among the next large targets for the field. This comes with material challenges for perovskite and their companion charge transport layers (CTLs). Among the charge transport materials …

The Study Of Corrosion On Additive-Manufactured Metals., Braydan Daniels
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the corrosion mechanisms between wrought and additive-manufactured (3D-printed) copper and stainless steel. The experimental procedure consisted of measuring the open circuit potential, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, linear sweep voltammetry, Tafel analysis, surface topology, and scanning electron microscopy for each metal within salt water, tap water, sulfuric acid, and synthetic body fluid (excluding copper in synthetic body fluid).
Overall, printed stainless steel was more corrosion-resistant than wrought stainless steel in tap water and synthetic body fluid based on OCP, LSV, and surface topology results. Additionally, printed copper was more corrosion-resistant than wrought …

Structural, Magnetic, Electrical, Pseudocapacitive, And Electrocatalytic Properties Of Bilayered Ruddlesden-Popper Oxides., Chandana Kananke-Gamage
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ruddlesden Popper (RP) oxides are perovskite-derived functional materials with the general formula An-1Aʹ2BnO3n+1, where A/Aʹ is often a lanthanide or alkaline earth metal, and B is usually a transition metal. These materials contain perovskite-like connectivity, where BO6 units share apexes to form layers that are stacked above each other. The number of layers in each stack is represented by n in the above formula. The spaces between stacks are often occupied by lanthanide or alkaline-earth metals (Aʹ-site metals), which also reside in intra-stack spaces (A-site) between the octahedra. Oxide materials derived from perovskites have been studied for a wide range …

Structural, Charge Transport, Gas Sensing, Magnetic, Pseudocapacitive, And Electrocatalytic Properties Of Perovskite Oxides., Surendra Bahadur Karki
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Perovskites are functional materials with the general formula ABO3 (A = alkali, alkaline earth or lanthanoid cations and B = transition metal or main group cations). These materials are marked by a variety of crystal structures and interesting properties such as colossal magnetoresistance, ferroelectricity, multiferroicity, superconductivity, pseudocapacitance, gas sensing, charge transport, and electrocatalytic properties. The formula of perovskite can be written as AA’BB’O6, when there is ordering between two cations over A and B-sites. Such compounds are called double perovskite oxides. Some amount of oxygen could be lost from crystal structure without decomposition of the phase. Such …
Design, Synthesis And Application Of Janus Gold Nanoprisms For Directed Self-Assembly., Md. Emtias Chowdhury
Design, Synthesis And Application Of Janus Gold Nanoprisms For Directed Self-Assembly., Md. Emtias Chowdhury
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Colloidal Janus particles that possess more than one type of surface chemistry or functionalities have drawn significant interest due to their enormous potential in bottom-up synthetic strategies for complex superstructures. Moreover, the property of molecular recognition, tunability, and predictability of the DNA-mediated interactions enable a high degree of control over particle assembly to generate highly ordered nanostructures with emergent applications. In this dissertation, we present our works on the synthesis of Janus particles from anisotropic gold nanoprisms, and DNA- mediated assembly of nanoprisms and polymer beads in four major areas: 1) Facet selective asymmetric functionalization of gold nanoprisms for Janus …
Long-Range Electrostatic Interactions In Gold Catalysis And Fluorinating Reagent Development., Zhichao Lu
Long-Range Electrostatic Interactions In Gold Catalysis And Fluorinating Reagent Development., Zhichao Lu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Our research focus is on applying two long range electrostatic interactions--coulombic interaction between ion pairs and hydrogen bonding—to two tasks: exploring counterion effects in gold catalysis and utilizing hydrogen bonding for fluorinating reagent development. Cationic gold catalysis is considered one of the most important breakthroughs in organic synthesis over the past two decades. A wealth of empirical information on counterion effects is now available regarding homogeneous gold catalysis. However, the rational understanding of the counterion effect on reactivity is still elusive. We proposed a widely applicable model to rationalize the kinetic effect in gold catalyzed reaction. We first solved the …

Artificial Olfactory System For Multi-Component Analysis Of Gas Mixtures., Alexander Aleksandrovich Larin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Gas analysis is an important part of our world and gas sensing technology is becoming more essential for various aspects of our life. A novel approach for gas mixture analysis by using portable gas chromatography in combination with an array of highly integrated and selective metal oxide (MOX) sensors has been studied. We developed a system with small size (7 x 13 x 16 inches), low power consumption (~10 W) and absence of special carrier gases designed for portable field analysis (assuming apriori calibration). Low ppb and even sub-ppb level of detection for some VOCs was achieved during the analysis …

Transient Absorption Studies Of Cdse Nanocluster Passivated With Phenyldithiocarbamate Ligands., Yizhou Xie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Semiconductor nanocluster (SCNC) research is a rapidly growing field driven by the promising fact that properties of such materials can be tailored by modifying their size, shape, and structure. Combination of nanocluster and organic ligands provides even wider possibilities of design and development of effective and task-specific nanostructures. Understanding of and, eventually, control of energetics, interfacial interaction, and photoinduced processes in such highly heterogeneous structures is critical to invention of novel materials including those in photovoltaic devices. In the newly established Ultrafast Laser Facility (ULF), transient absorption pump-probe spectroscopy (TAPPS) has been employed to investigate the electron transfer (ET) and …

Controlled Electrochemical Synthesis Of Single One-Dimensional Metal Nanochains Across Microgap Electrodes., Amareshwari Konutham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study mainly focuses on the fabrication of single one dimensional (1D) NP chains across the 5-micron gap of Au two electrode devices (TED). This has been achieved by electrochemical deposition of Ag onto the two electrodes, soaking the TED in 0.1 M Cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide for 2-3 hours, and then close monitoring of the current as a function of time while a voltage across the two Ag coated Au electrodes in air. One dimensional Ag nanoparticle chain formation occurred by oxidation of Ag to Ag+ at the positive electrode followed by movement of Ag+ ions to the …

The Unique Electrochemical Reactivity Of Small Metal Nanoparticles., Rafael A. Masitas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation describes the factors controlling metal nanoparticle (NP) oxidation, using Au oxidation in Br- and Ag oxidation in acid as model systems. We found that the oxidation potential depends on size, surface charge, and electrode material. Size has a dramatic effect, shifting about 200 mV from > 200 nm diameter down to 4 nm diameter. The shift is more dramatic below 4 nm. 2.3 nm average diameter Au NPs oxidized in the 300-500 mV range and 1.5 nm average diameter Au NPs displayed several sharp peaks from 200 mV to as low as -200 mV. These smallest Au NPs show …
