Dissertations

As water scarcity increases globally under the stresses of increasing demand, aquifer depletion, and climate change, the market for efficient desalination technologies has grown rapidly to fill the void. One such developing technology, membrane distillation (MD), has found much interest in the scientific community. MD has also been powered by solar energy and waste heat resources because it can be operated at relatively low temperatures. Recent studies indicate that MD could potentially achieve the efficiencies of state-of-the-art mature thermal desalination technologies, although additional engineering and scientific challenges must first be overcome.

MD can be used to treat high salinity water …

Transient Electrochemical Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopic Study In Electrochemical Reduction Of P-Nitrothiophenol, Yun Ling, Jing Tang, Guo-Kun Liu, Cheng Zong

Journal of Electrochemistry

P-nitrothiophenol (PNTP) is one of the most common probe molecules studied by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The research in electrochemical reduction behavior of PNTP will help understanding the mechanism for the nitrobenzene reduction. In this paper, we used transient electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TEC-SERS) to study the SERS of PNTP with cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry on gold electrodes. The results show that the TEC-SERS provide a time resolution that equals the transient electrochemical methods, and we concluded that the reaction was so quick that we did not observe the spectral information of intermediate species described in the literatures with a …

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this study, differential pulse stripping voltammetry was developed for the quantitative detection of levofloxacin hydrochloride indirectly. Levofloxacin hydrochloride contains organic amine, which can be precipitated upon interaction with Zn(SCN)42-. By means of differential pulse stripping voltammetry, the concentration of Zn2+ can be determined using an in-situ formed bismuth film electrode, which allows determining indirectly the amount of levofloxacine hydrochloride. The linearity equation, I = 1.1401c - 0.5309 with the correlative coefficient R = 0.9979, was presented in the experiment. The results showed that this approach is very sensitive, having a limitation of detection of 3.18 …

Performance Of Nitrogen As A Carrier Gas In Capillary Gas Chromatography Using A Thin Film Column, Brittany A. Handzo Dec 2019

Performance Of Nitrogen As A Carrier Gas In Capillary Gas Chromatography Using A Thin Film Column, Brittany A. Handzo

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Gas chromatography (GC) is one of the most widely used analytical techniques for the separation and analysis of volatile compounds. Solids, liquids, and gases, organic and inorganic materials, and large molecular weight compounds can all be analyzed via this technique. Gas chromatographic separations are fast, accurate, and reliable. One of the reasons why these separations are so efficient is because of the carrier gas. The purpose of the carrier gas is to carry the injected sample through the column. It is known as the mobile phase and does not interact chemically with the sample. Common carrier gases include helium, hydrogen, …

Reactivity Of Photogenerated Amine Radical Cations, Qile Wang Dec 2019

Reactivity Of Photogenerated Amine Radical Cations, Qile Wang

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Recently photoredox catalysis has emerged as a powerful tool in organic synthesis led by Professor McMillan, Stephenson, Yoon. Upon absorption of visible light, photocatalyst can be excited to its singlet state followed by intersystem crossing to form a long lived excited triplet state. While amine serves as electron donor, single electron transfer (SET) can happen between excited triplet photocatalyst and nitrogen atom on amine to give a reduced photocatalyst and amine radical cation.

Cyclopropylamines or cyclobutylamines can be oxidized by excited photocatalyst to generate amine radical cations and due to the ring strain, subsequent C-C bond cleavages can lead to …

Understanding And Controlling Lithium Microstructure During Electroplating For Energy Applications, Yang Tian Dec 2019

Understanding And Controlling Lithium Microstructure During Electroplating For Energy Applications, Yang Tian

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Lithium-ion batteries are reaching the specific theoretical capacity limit, while lithium metal batteries are regarded as the ideal energy storage system for the next generation “beyond lithium-ion” battery systems. The lithium metal anode is considered as the “Holy grail” of anodes due to its relatively low electrochemical potential (-3.04 V vs SHE) and high theoretical capacity (3860 mAh g-1). However, the application of lithium metal anodes is hindered because of significant reaction between metallic lithium and electrolytes, as well as uneven electro-plating, which leads to dendrite formation, causing safety problems.

The kinetic parameters of Li ions such as diffusion coefficient …

Amphiphilic Block Copolymer Micelles In Selective Solvents: The Effect Of Solvent Selectivity On Micelle Formation, Labeesh Kumar, Andriy Horechyy, Eva Bittrich, Bhanu Nandan, Petra Uhlmann, Andreas Fery

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

We investigated the micellar behavior of a series of asymmetric polystyrene-block-poly (4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) block copolymers in different P4VP-selective alcoholic solvents. The micellar behavior was further correlated with the spectroscopic ellipsometry results obtained on swelling of PS and P4VP polymer films in the corresponding solvent vapors. The time-resolved (in situ) dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements, in combination with (ex situ) electron microscopy imaging, revealed information about the aggregation state of PS-b-P4VP BCP in different alcohols and the effect of heat treatment. The ellipsometry measurements allowed us to estimate the difference in solvent selectivity toward PS/P4VP pair. Both DLS and ellipsometric studies …

The Effects Of Temperature On The Yields Of Aliphatic And Aromatic Products From The Supercritical Pyrolysis Of 1-Octene, Elizabeth Anne Hurst

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Prior to their combustion, fuels for future high-speed aircraft are expected to experience supercritical conditions, leading to the production of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), precursors to solid carbonaceous deposits, via pyrolytic reactions. These solid deposits can clog fuel-transfer lines, causing unsafe aircraft operation. To prevent the formation of fuel-line deposits, it is critical to understand the reaction pathways that lead to PAH formation in the supercritical fuel pyrolysis environment.

To better understand the role of large 1-alkenes in PAH formation, supercritical pyrolysis experiments with model fuel 1-octene, a representative 1-alkene product from supercritical n-alkane pyrolysis, have been performed. The …

An improved understanding of the origin of the electrocatalytic activity is of importance to the rational design of highly efficient electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction. Here, an ambipolar single-crystal tungsten diselenide (WSe2) semiconductor is employed as a model system where the conductance and carrier of WSe2 can be individually tuned by external electric fields. The field-tuned electrochemical microcell is fabricated based on the single-crystal WSe2 and the catalytic activity of the WSe2 microcell is measured versus the external electric field. Results show that WSe2 with electrons serving as the dominant carrier yields much higher activity than WSe2 with holes …

Methodologies For Metal Functionalization Of Phosphorus Based Photopolymer Networks, Vanessa Béland Oct 2019

Methodologies For Metal Functionalization Of Phosphorus Based Photopolymer Networks, Vanessa Béland

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Photopolymer networks with phosphonium cation, alkyl phosphine and olefin functionality were designed, synthesized and functionalized with metals by metathesis, coordination and hydrometallation reactions, respectively. The materials were strategically designed so that the metal functionalization step could be monitored and quantified. In some cases, this involved characterization by IR, NMR, or X-ray spectroscopic techniques, or by comparison to molecular analogues. It was found that by using a bi-functional photopolymer network, the material could be bi-metallized by orthogonal mechanisms. All metallized polymer networks were tested for their suitability as precursors to metal-containing ceramics. The polymers were pyrolyzed, and on analysis it was …

Bone Regeneration Via Inorganic/Organic Compatibility In A Newly Synthesized Hydrogel: Nhap-Bmp-2, Hannah Ewing

Chemistry & Biochemistry Student Projects

In this paper, nHAp-BMP-2 hydrogel is carefully synthesized in order to optimize the organic and inorganic compatibility which induces osteogenesis—the formation of new bone. This new method is a novel development within the medical field, giving more hope to those suffering from traumatic bone injuries. A drawback with using hydrogels is the difficulty of controlling peptide release in the affected areas. Too quick of a release alarms the human inflammatory response resulting in more substantial injury and an even prolonged recovery time. On the other hand, if the peptides that promote bioactivity are released too slowly, the bone will not …
