The recovery of iodine released during the processing of used nuclear fuel poses a significant challenge to the transmutation of radioactive iodine. This proposal will develop and examine the use of Fullerene Containing Carbon (FCC) compounds as potential sorbents for iodine release from the reprocessing of nuclear fuel. This work will also include the development of bench-scale testing capabilities at UNLV to allow the testing of the FCC material in a simulated process off-gas environment. This experimental capability will also be used to test other potential sorbtion materials and processes, such as natural organic matter (NOM) and other promising alternatives. …

Exciplex tuning and optical memory behavior of [Ag(CN)2-] and [Au(CN)2-] ions doped in KCl host crystals, pure KAg(CN)2, and pure KAU(CN)2 have been studied. Additionally, d10-d10 (KAu(CN)2-KAg(CN))2) and d10-d8 (KAu(CN)2, KAg(CN)2- K2Pt(CN)4) mixed metal systems have been synthesized and characterized. Several ultraviolet and visible emission bands are observed for [Ag(CN))2-] and [Au(CN)2-] ions doped in KC1 host crystals. Each emission band becomes dominant at a characteristic excitation …

Partial ion yield spectroscopy provides a very detailed picture of fragmentation processes following core excitation in isolated molecules. We exploit this potential in the analysis of decay processes following C1s→π and C1s→Rydberg excitations in ethylene and acetylene. We show that the relative intensity of spectral features related to the excitation to empty molecular orbitals or to Rydberg states is a function of the time variation of the fragmentation process. Namely, we see an intensity increase in the Rydberg states compared to the molecular orbitals as the fragmentation process becomes more extensive, a result attributable to the diffuse nature of the …

Rapid Determination Of Serum Melatonin By Esi–Ms–Ms With Direct Sample Injection, Shuming Yang, Xiaohui Zheng, Yan Xu, Xiang Zhou

This paper describes a rapid, simple and sensitive analytical method for the quantitative determination of melatonin in human serum by ESI–MS–MS with direct serum sample injection and on-line extraction. The method uses N-acetyltryptamine as the internal standard. It has high specificity and sensitivity for serum melatonin analysis. The internal calibration curve shows a wide linear range from 0.500 to 200 ng/ml with a correlation coefficient, R2>0.999. The limit of quantitation is 0.500 ng/ml and the limit of detection is 0.100 ng/ml with 10-μl sample injection. The recoveries of serum melatonin at three levels are approximately 70%. A general strategy for creating nanocavities with tunable sizes based on the folding of unnatural oligomers is presented. The backbones of these oligomers are rigidified by localized, threecenter intramolecular hydrogen bonds, which lead to well-defined hollow helical conformations. Changing the curvature of the oligomer backbone leads to the adjustment of the interior cavity size. Helices with interior cavities of 10 Å to >30 Å across, the largest thus far formed by the folding of unnatural foldamers, are generated. As part of the Yucca Mountain Oversight program, the Nye County Nuclear Waste Repository Project Office (NWRPO) has established a groundwater monitoring program to protect groundwater resources for the residents of Nye County in Amargosa and Pahrump Valleys. This groundwater monitoring program, referred to as the Nye County Early Warning Drilling Program (NCEWDP), involves drilling a series of wells down-gradient from Yucca Mountain for long term groundwater monitoring and also to provide much needed geologic and hydrologic information in this area. We combine the theory of inside-source/inside-detector x-ray fluorescence holography and Kossel lines/x ray standing waves in kinematic approximation to directly obtain the phases of the diffraction structure factors. The influence of Kossel lines and standing waves on holography is also discussed. We obtain partial phase determination from experimental data obtaining the sign of the real part of the structure factor for several reciprocal lattice vectors of a vanadium crystal.

Structural and electronic properties of co-sputtered Ni-Mg thin films with varying Ni to Mg ratio were studied by in-situ x-ray absorption spectroscopy in the Ni L-edge and Mg K-edge regions. Co-deposition of the metals led to increased disorder and decreased coordination around Ni and Mg compared to pure metal films. Exposure of the metallic films to hydrogen resulted in formation of hydrides and increased disorder. The presence of hydrogen as a near neighbor around Mg caused a drastic reduction in the intensities of multiple scattering resonances at higher energies. The lacustrine sedimentary archive of organic remains provides important evidence for the reconstruction of the environmental histories of lakes and their watersheds, recording the response of the Earth's biota to changes on scales varying from the local to the global. The last Glacial-Interglacial transition presents an opportunity to investigate how, and at what rates, watershed and lake ecosystems were established on once glaciated, carbon and nutrient-poor landscapes. The small lakes of northern Vermont (USA) provide an appropriate setting in which to investigate such changes.

Based on the oscillographic characteristic of novalgin that incision can be caused at -1.2 V( vs .SCE) in 0.1 mol·L -1 KNO 3 , a new electronanlytical method, second order differential simple oscillographic voltammetry for the determination of novalgin was found. The method was applied to the determination of novalgin in tablet. The calibration graph is linear from 5.0×10 -6 to 5.0×10 -5 mol·L -1 with a detection limit of 2×10 -6 mol·L -1 . The painted steel sample whose coating contained anticorrosive pigment has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy.The protective mechanism of aluminum triphosphate pigment for A3 steel is proposed as follows: Aluminum triphosphate can be dissolved and arrive at the surface of the steel.The dissolved triphosphate ions can complex with ferric ions.And the new products,namely ferric triphosphate,can strongly adhere at the surface of the steel by chemical bonds slowly.At last,a compact protective film,which effectively separates the steel substrate from the aggressive media,is formed at the steel surface.

The research reported in this thesis focused on poly (propylene imine) (PPI) dendrimers, in terms of their structures, properties and potential applications. Different analytical techniques, including our main research tool, NMR spectroscopy, as well as AFM imaging and UV-vis spectroscopy, were used for the elucidation of structural information. The study showed (1) PPI dendrimers tend to have the extended chain conformation in polar solvents because of the strong interaction between solvent and dendrimer molecules, while in nonpolar solvents the dendrimers are inclined to have the back-folded chain conformation as a result of the weaker interaction between …

The appearance of powder-coated films is dependent upon powder chemistry and spraying parameters. One of the most important physical factors controlling the powder film appearance is the microdeposition of the powder particles on the grounded substrate. During the electrostatic deposition of powder, the formation of dendrites and agglomerates was observed; these formations have an adverse effect on the final film appearance and their elimination may result in smoother and glossier films. Electrostatic microencapsulation is a dry coating process where two powders, one containing the fines and the other relatively larger particles, are separately dispersed in air and pre-charged with opposite polarity, using corona charging for electrostatic coagulation. These oppositely charged core and guest particles experience attractive electrostatic forces and generate composite particles. Preliminary experiments of electrostatic microencapsulation were performed using Anionic Exchange Resin (AG 1-X8) as the host particle and Red Toner (Omega 4000) as the guest particles. An electrostatic microencapsulation tower has been designed for generation of composite particles using particles of different particle size distribution.
