Layer-by-layer electrostatic deposition of polyelectrolytes was used to modify a gold substrate with polydiallyl dimethylammonium chloride and an Ultem-type poly(amic acid) salt. Following deposition, heat treatment converted the poly(amic acid) salt into a polyimide. A decrease in the thin film thickness and a substantial increase in the interfacial contact angle accompanied thermal treatment. Results from cyclic voltammetry measurements also show that the imidized surface had a decreased dielectric constant relative to an unmodified or a poly(amic acid)-modified interface. Each of these results is consistent with formation of the polyimide. Infrared spectra of the thin films formed by the electrostatic deposition …

Method Of Solubilizing Shortened Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes In Organic Solutions, Robert C. Haddon, Jian Chen

Chemistry Faculty Patents

Naked single-walled nanotube carbon metals and semiconductors were dissolved in organic solutions by derivatization with SOCl2 and octadecylamine charge. Both ionic (charge transfer) and covalent solution phase chemistry with concomitant modulation of the single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) band structure were demonstrated. Solution phase near-IR spectroscopy was used to study the effects of chemical modifications on the band gaps of the SWNTs. Reaction of solubilized SWNTs with dichlorocarbene led to functionalization of the nanotube walls.

Liangcheng Du Publications

The hybrid peptide–polyketide backbone of bleomycin (BLM) is assembled by the BLM megasynthetase that consists of both nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) and polyketide synthase (PKS) modules. BlmIX/BlmVIII/BlmVII constitute a natural hybrid NRPS/PKS/NRPS system, serving as a model for both hybrid NRPS/PKS and PKS/NRPS systems. Sequence analysis and functional comparison of domains and modules of BlmIX/BlmVIII/BlmVII with those of nonhybrid NRPS and PKS systems suggest that (1) the same catalytic sites appear to be conserved in both hybrid NRPS–PKS and nonhybrid NRPS or PKS systems, with the exception of the KS domains in the hybrid NRPS/PKS systems that are unique; (2) …

The Study Of Biological Membranes Using The Atomic Force Microscope, Brandy L. Perkins Dec 2001

The Study Of Biological Membranes Using The Atomic Force Microscope, Brandy L. Perkins

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

In the past research, when a carbon nanotube enhanced cantilever was probed along a living cell membrane, carboxylic acid groups located at the tips of the nanotubes would interact with various groups on the surface of the membrane causing it to rupture. A method to re-derivatize the tips of the nanotubes through covalent bonding by allowing the amine groups to attach to the carboxylic acid groups was developed. This chemical change perhaps will allow one to probe a cell surface without rupturing it. Successful nanotube derivatization will eventually lead to a map of the surface of living cell membranes and …

Phytoremediation Of Lead By Chinese Tallow (Sapium Sebiferum) Plant, Oluwaseumi A. Odebunmi

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

Over the past several decades, health and environmental risks of pollution have become apparent. As a result, environmental regulations have been created to remediate areas where environmental contamination is tremendous, therefore, a low-cost alternative to the already existing technology is needed. Using plants to eliminate hazardous organic compounds from contaminated soils has been proposed as an efficient means of remediation. Phytoremediation is the direct use of living green plants to remediate soil, sludge, sediments and ground water contaminated with toxic compounds. The four processes of phytoremediation are rhizofiltration, phytoextraction, phytostabilization and phytodegradation. As they 'grow and develop, plants will use …

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Measurements of angular distributions of K-shell electrons photoejected from molecular nitrogen are reported which reveal large deviations at relatively low photon energies ( ħω≤500eV) from emission patterns anticipated from the dipole approximation to interactions between radiation and matter. A concomitant theoretical analysis incorporating the effects of electromagnetic retardation attributes the observed large nondipole behaviors in N2 to bond-length-dependent terms in the E1⊗(E2,M1) photoelectron emission amplitudes which are indicative of a potentially universal nondipole behavior in molecular photoionization.

Barry Chin Li Cheung Publications

Chromatin-remodeling complexes alter chromatin structure to facilitate, or in some cases repress, gene expression. Recent studies have suggested two potential pathways by which such regulation might occur. In the first, the remodeling complex repositions nucleosomes along DNA to open or occlude regulatory sites. In the second, the remodeling complex creates an altered dimeric form of the nucleosome that has altered accessibility to transcription factors. The extent of translational repositioning, the structure of the remodeled dimer, and the presence of dimers on remodeled polynucleosomes have been difficult to gauge by biochemical assays. To address these questions, ultrahigh-resolution carbon nanotube tip atomic …

Pan, Ppn And Mpan Measurements And The Quantitative Relationship Of Pan And Mpan In Biogenic Hydrocarbon Conditions, Chen Wangchun Dec 2001

Pan, Ppn And Mpan Measurements And The Quantitative Relationship Of Pan And Mpan In Biogenic Hydrocarbon Conditions, Chen Wangchun

Masters Theses

Simultaneous measurements of PAN, PPN and MPAN were made during the SOS 1999 Nashville campaign at Dickson site. The PANs data at this site were rich and complex. PAN and MP AN showed obvious diurnal change but PPN did not during this period. PAN and ozone have a clear positive relationship. Due to the special location of the site, winds from different directions bring anthropogenic hydrocarbons (AHCs) or biogenic hydrocarbons (BHCs) to the site. The data showed that the influence of AHCs and BHCs on PANs compounds varied on different days. Average values of PAN/PPN and PAN/MPAN from MLR may …

Characterization Of Organo-Tin And Organo-Mercury Compounds With Electrospray Mass Spectrometry, Kan Zhu Dec 2001

Characterization Of Organo-Tin And Organo-Mercury Compounds With Electrospray Mass Spectrometry, Kan Zhu

Masters Theses

Metal-containing compounds are often found as pollutants in the environment. Obtaining speciation information about these compounds is important to understanding toxieity and bioaccumulation. Electrospray Mass Spectrometry (ESMS) is a technique that has the potential to provide rapid and direct speciation information of solution phase metal compounds. The ionization behavior of chemical species is related to their electron affinities. The higher the electron affinity, the easier it will be reduced during the ionization process. Additionally, solvent with different polarity and surface tension will also affect the ionization and reduction products. Organo-tin compounds with more alkyl groups will be ionized more efficiently, …

Prediction Of The Crystal Structures Of Perovskites Using The Software Program Spuds, Michael W. Lufaso, Patrick M. Woodward Dec 2001

Prediction Of The Crystal Structures Of Perovskites Using The Software Program Spuds, Michael W. Lufaso, Patrick M. Woodward

Chemistry Faculty Research and Scholarship

The software program SPuDS has been developed to predict the crystal structures of perovskites, including those distorted by tilting of the octahedra. The user inputs the composition and SPuDS calculates the optimal structure in ten different Glazer tilt systems. This is performed by distorting the structure to minimize the global instability index, while maintaining rigid octahedra. The location of the A-site cation is chosen so as to maximize the symmetry of its coordination environment. In its current form SPuDS can handle up to four different A-site cations in the same structure, but only one octahedral ion. Structures predicted …

Adsorption And Oxidation Of Methanol On Pt And Sb, S Modified Pt Electrodes Using Cyclic Voltammetry And Eqcm, Guo-Liang Chen, Sheng-Pei Chen, Heng Lin, Xing-Hong Zheng, Shi-Gang Sun

Journal of Electrochemistry

The processes of adsorption and oxidation of methanol on Pt, Pt/Sb ad and Pt/S ad electrodes were studied by using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical quartz crystal microba_lance (EQCM). The results demonstrated that the oxidation of methanol depends strongly on oxidation states of electrode surface. Sb adatoms on Pt surface can adsorb oxygen at relatively low potentials, and exhibit catalytic effects for methanol oxidation. In contrast to Pt electrodes, the oxidation peak potential of methanol in this case negatively shifted to about 130 mV. In a contrary, the oxidation of S adatoms consumes oxygen species of Pt electrode surface. As a …

Journal of Electrochemistry

In 0.1 mol/L HAc solution(pH=2.89),the voltammetric behaviours of aloe emodin at a glassy carbon electode has been studied. One pair of current peak of the voltammogram may be attributed to a quasireversible two electron transfer of aloe emodin molecules at the glassy carbon electrode. A new method, the derivative anodic stripping voltammetry, for aloe emodin determination is described. The adsorptive potential of aloe emodin is -0.80V(vs. SCE),while its stripping potential is -0.38V(vs.SCE). The peak current is propotional to the concentration of aloe emodin over the range of 2.0×10 -7 ~8.0×10 -6 mol/L. The method is simple, rapid and reliable for …
