Structured Invariant Subspace And Decomposition Of Systems With Time Delays And Uncertainties, Huan Phan-Van, Keqin Gu
Structured Invariant Subspace And Decomposition Of Systems With Time Delays And Uncertainties, Huan Phan-Van, Keqin Gu
SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
This article discusses invariant subspaces of a matrix with a given partition structure. The existence of a nontrivial structured invariant subspace is equivalent to the possibility of decomposing the associated system with multiple feedback blocks such that the feedback operators are subject to a given constraint. The formulation is especially useful in the stability analysis of time-delay systems using the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional approach where computational efficiency is essential in order to achieve accuracy for large scale systems. The set of all structured invariant subspaces are obtained (thus all possible decompositions are obtained as a result) for the coupled differential-difference equations …

Reducing Food Scarcity: The Benefits Of Urban Farming, S.A. Claudell, Emilio Mejia
Journal of Nonprofit Innovation
Urban farming can enhance the lives of communities and help reduce food scarcity. This paper presents a conceptual prototype of an efficient urban farming community that can be scaled for a single apartment building or an entire community across all global geoeconomics regions, including densely populated cities and rural, developing towns and communities. When deployed in coordination with smart crop choices, local farm support, and efficient transportation then the result isn’t just sustainability, but also increasing fresh produce accessibility, optimizing nutritional value, eliminating the use of ‘forever chemicals’, reducing transportation costs, and fostering global environmental benefits.

Aspects Of Stochastic Geometric Mechanics In Molecular Biophysics, David Frost
All Dissertations
In confocal single-molecule FRET experiments, the joint distribution of FRET efficiency and donor lifetime distribution can reveal underlying molecular conformational dynamics via deviation from their theoretical Forster relationship. This shift is referred to as a dynamic shift. In this study, we investigate the influence of the free energy landscape in protein conformational dynamics on the dynamic shift by simulation of the associated continuum reaction coordinate Langevin dynamics, yielding a deeper understanding of the dynamic and structural information in the joint FRET efficiency and donor lifetime distribution. We develop novel Langevin models for the dye linker dynamics, including rotational dynamics, based …

Controlled Manipulation And Transport By Microswimmers In Stokes Flows, Jake Buzhardt
All Dissertations
Remotely actuated microscale swimming robots have the potential to revolutionize many aspects of biomedicine. However, for the longterm goals of this field of research to be achievable, it is necessary to develop modelling, simulation, and control strategies which effectively and efficiently account for not only the motion of individual swimmers, but also the complex interactions of such swimmers with their environment including other nearby swimmers, boundaries, other cargo and passive particles, and the fluid medium itself. The aim of this thesis is to study these problems in simulation from the perspective of controls and dynamical systems, with a particular focus …

Deep Q-Learning Framework For Quantitative Climate Change Adaptation Policy For Florida Road Network Due To Extreme Precipitation, Orhun Aydin
I-GUIDE Forum
Climate change-induced extreme weather and increasing population are increasing the pressure on the global aging road networks. Adaptation requires designing interventions and alterations to the road networks that consider future dynamics of flooding and increased traffic due to the growing population. This paper introduces a reinforcement learning approach to designing interventions for Florida's road network under future traffic and climate projections. Three climate models and a tide and surge model are used to create flooding and coastal inundation projections, respectively. The optimal sequence of decisions for adapting Florida's road network to minimize flooding-related disruptions is solved by using a graph-based …
Rigid Body Constrained Motion Optimization And Control On Lie Groups And Their Tangent Bundles, Brennan S. Mccann
Rigid Body Constrained Motion Optimization And Control On Lie Groups And Their Tangent Bundles, Brennan S. Mccann
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Rigid body motion requires formulations where rotational and translational motion are accounted for appropriately. Two Lie groups, the special orthogonal group SO(3) and the space of quaternions H, are commonly used to represent attitude. When considering rigid body pose, that is spacecraft position and attitude, the special Euclidean group SE(3) and the space of dual quaternions DH are frequently utilized. All these groups are Lie groups and Riemannian manifolds, and these identifications have profound implications for dynamics and controls. The trajectory optimization and optimal control problem on Riemannian manifolds presents significant opportunities for theoretical development. Riemannian optimization is an attractive …
Stability Of Cauchy's Equation On Δ+., Holden Wells
Stability Of Cauchy's Equation On Δ+., Holden Wells
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The most famous functional equation f(x+y)=f(x)+f(y) known as Cauchy's equation due to its appearance in the seminal analysis text Cours d'Analyse (Cauchy 1821), was used to understand fundamental aspects of the real numbers and the importance of regularity assumptions in mathematical analysis. Since then, the equation has been abstracted and examined in many contexts. One such examination, introduced by Stanislaw Ulam and furthered by Donald Hyers, was that of stability. Hyers demonstrated that Cauchy's equation exhibited stability over Banach Spaces in the following sense: functions that approximately satisfy Cauchy's equation are approximated with the same level of error by functions …
Distributed Control Of Servicing Satellite Fleet Using Horizon Simulation Framework, Scott Plantenga
Distributed Control Of Servicing Satellite Fleet Using Horizon Simulation Framework, Scott Plantenga
Master's Theses
On-orbit satellite servicing is critical to maximizing space utilization and sustainability and is of growing interest for commercial, civil, and defense applications. Reliance on astronauts or anchored robotic arms for the servicing of next-generation large, complex space structures operating beyond Low Earth Orbit is impractical. Substantial literature has investigated the mission design and analysis of robotic servicing missions that utilize a single servicing satellite to approach and service a single target satellite. This motivates the present research to investigate a fleet of servicing satellites performing several operations for a large, central space structure.
This research leverages a distributed control approach, …

Modeling, Simulation And Control Of Microrobots For The Microfactory., Zhong Yang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Future assembly technologies will involve higher levels of automation in order to satisfy increased microscale or nanoscale precision requirements. Traditionally, assembly using a top-down robotic approach has been well-studied and applied to the microelectronics and MEMS industries, but less so in nanotechnology. With the boom of nanotechnology since the 1990s, newly designed products with new materials, coatings, and nanoparticles are gradually entering everyone’s lives, while the industry has grown into a billion-dollar volume worldwide. Traditionally, nanotechnology products are assembled using bottom-up methods, such as self-assembly, rather than top-down robotic assembly. This is due to considerations of volume handling of large …

Al-Azhar Bulletin of Science
This manuscript displays the vibrations reduction of a clamped- clamped micro-beam subjected to an excitation external force via applying the positive position feedback (PPF) controller. The approximate solutions of the whole system are obtained up to the second order approximation with the help of the multiple scale perturbation technique (MSP). The Stability analysis is studied by utilizing the frequency response equations near the simultaneous condition .Time histories and response curves figures before and after control of the whole system are examined numerically using Rung-Kutta Fourth-order method (Maple(16) software and Matlab 7.7(R2014) software. Numerical results of the influences of different parameters …

Portfolio Optimization Analysis In The Family Of 4/2 Stochastic Volatility Models, Yuyang Cheng
Portfolio Optimization Analysis In The Family Of 4/2 Stochastic Volatility Models, Yuyang Cheng
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Over the last two decades, trading of financial derivatives has increased significantly along with richer and more complex behaviour/traits on the underlying assets. The need for more advanced models to capture traits and behaviour of risky assets is crucial. In this spirit, the state-of-the-art 4/2 stochastic volatility model was recently proposed by Grasselli in 2017 and has gained great attention ever since. The 4/2 model is a superposition of a Heston (1/2) component and a 3/2 component, which is shown to be able to eliminate the limitations of these two individual models, bringing the best out of each other. Based …

A Novel Chebyshev Wavelet Method For Solving Fractional-Order Optimal Control Problems, Ghodsieh Ghanbari
A Novel Chebyshev Wavelet Method For Solving Fractional-Order Optimal Control Problems, Ghodsieh Ghanbari
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents a numerical approach based on generalized fractional-order Chebyshev wavelets for solving fractional-order optimal control problems. The exact value of the Riemann– Liouville fractional integral operator of the generalized fractional-order Chebyshev wavelets is computed by applying the regularized beta function. We apply the given wavelets, the exact formula, and the collocation method to transform the studied problem into a new optimization problem. The convergence analysis of the proposed method is provided. The present method is extended for solving fractional-order, distributed-order, and variable-order optimal control problems. Illustrative examples are considered to show the advantage of this method in comparison …
Model Based Force Estimation And Stiffness Control For Continuum Robots, Vincent A. Aloi
Model Based Force Estimation And Stiffness Control For Continuum Robots, Vincent A. Aloi
Doctoral Dissertations
Continuum Robots are bio-inspired structures that mimic the motion of snakes, elephant trunks, octopus tentacles, etc. With good design, these robots can be naturally compliant and miniaturizable, which makes Continuum Robots ideal for traversing narrow complex environments. Their flexible design, however, prevents us from using traditional methods for controlling and estimating loading on rigid link robots.
In the first thrust of this research, we provided a novel stiffness control law that alters the behavior of an end effector during contact. This controller is applicable to any continuum robot where a method for sensing or estimating tip forces and pose exists. …
Data And Algorithmic Modeling Approaches To Count Data, Andraya Hack
Data And Algorithmic Modeling Approaches To Count Data, Andraya Hack
Honors College Theses
Various techniques are used to create predictions based on count data. This type of data takes the form of a non-negative integers such as the number of claims an insurance policy holder may make. These predictions can allow people to prepare for likely outcomes. Thus, it is important to know how accurate the predictions are. Traditional statistical approaches for predicting count data include Poisson regression as well as negative binomial regression. Both methods also have a zero-inflated version that can be used when the data has an overabundance of zeros. Another procedure is to use computer algorithms, also known as …
Path Planning And Flight Control Of Drones For Autonomous Pollination, Chapel R. Rice
Path Planning And Flight Control Of Drones For Autonomous Pollination, Chapel R. Rice
Masters Theses
The decline of natural pollinators necessitates the development of novel pollination technologies. In this thesis, a drone-enabled autonomous pollination system (APS) that consists of five primary modules: environment sensing, flower perception, path planning, flight control, and pollination mechanisms is proposed. These modules are highly dependent upon each other, with each module relying on inputs from the other modules. This thesis focuses on approaches to the path planning and flight control modules. Flower perception is briefly demonstrated developing a map of flowers using results from previous work. With that map of flowers, APS path planning is defined as a variant of …
Vertical Take-Off And Landing Control Via Dual-Quaternions And Sliding Mode, Joshua Sonderegger
Vertical Take-Off And Landing Control Via Dual-Quaternions And Sliding Mode, Joshua Sonderegger
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The landing and reusability of space vehicles is one of the driving forces into renewed interest in space utilization. For missions to planetary surfaces, this soft landing has been most commonly accomplished with parachutes. However, in spite of their simplicity, they are susceptible to parachute drift. This parachute drift makes it very difficult to predict where the vehicle will land, especially in a dense and windy atmosphere such as Earth. Instead, recent focus has been put into developing a powered landing through gimbaled thrust. This gimbaled thrust output is dependent on robust path planning and controls algorithms. Being able to …
An Integrated Computational Pipeline To Construct Patient-Specific Cancer Models, Daniel Plaugher
An Integrated Computational Pipeline To Construct Patient-Specific Cancer Models, Daniel Plaugher
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
Precision oncology largely involves tumor genomics to guide therapy protocols. Yet, it is well known that many commonly mutated genes cannot be easily targeted. Even when genes can be targeted, resistance to therapy is quite common. A rising field with promising results is that of mathematical biology, where in silico models are often used for the discovery of general principles and novel hypotheses that can guide the development of new treatments. A major goal is that eventually in silico models will accurately predict clinically relevant endpoints and find optimal control interventions to stop (or reverse) disease progression. Thus, it is …

Application Of Stochastic Control To Portfolio Optimization And Energy Finance, Junhe Chen
Application Of Stochastic Control To Portfolio Optimization And Energy Finance, Junhe Chen
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In this thesis, we study two continuous-time optimal control problems. The first describes competition in the energy market and the second aims at robust portfolio decisions for commodity markets. Both problems are approached via solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) and HJB-Isaacs (HJBI) equations.
In the energy market problem, our target is to maximize profits from trading crude oil by determining optimal crude oil production. We determine the optimal crude oil production rate by constructing a differential game between two types of players: a single finite-reserve producer and multiple infinite-reserve producers. We extend the deterministic unbounded-production model and stochastic monopolistic game to …
