Nonsmooth Epidemic Models With Evolutionary Game Theory, Cameron Morin
Nonsmooth Epidemic Models With Evolutionary Game Theory, Cameron Morin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the utilization of game theory and nonsmooth functions to enhance the accuracy of epidemiological simulations. Traditional sensitivity analysis encounters difficulties when dealing with nondifferentiable points in nonsmooth functions. However, by incorporating recent advancements in nonsmooth analysis, sensitivity analysis techniques have been adapted to accommodate these complex functions. In pursuit of more accurate simulations, evolutionary game theory, primarily the replicator equation, is introduced, modeling individuals’ decision making processes when observing others’ choices. The SEIR model is explored in depth, and additional complexities are incorporated, leading to the creation of an expanded SEIR model, the Be-SEIMR model.

Imperfect Immunity And The Stability Of A Modified Kermack-Mckendrick Model, Kaylee Sims
Imperfect Immunity And The Stability Of A Modified Kermack-Mckendrick Model, Kaylee Sims
Honors Theses
The classic Kermack-McKendrick model of mathematical epidemiology suggests that a population is only in equilibrium when there is no disease present. In the modern era, we have several cyclic infectious diseases that show no signs of eradication, despite global health measures. In this thesis, we introduce a coefficient of waning immunity in order to produce a modified Kermack-McKendrick model and analyze whether the model yields system stability with a certain amount of infection present. Ultimately, the model is incongruent with real-world case data, with its most glaring failure being exponential dampening of the height of each disease case peak due …

Analysis Of Sir Epidemic Models With Sociological Phenomenon, Robert F. Allen, Katherine C. Heller, Matthew A. Pons
Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics
We propose two SIR models which incorporate sociological behavior of groups of individuals. It is these differences in behaviors which impose different infection rates on the individual susceptible populations, rather than biological differences. We compute the basic reproduction number for each model, as well as analyze the sensitivity of R0 to changes in sociological parameter values.
Exploring Optimal Lockdown Policies During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Cameron Bundy
Exploring Optimal Lockdown Policies During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Cameron Bundy
Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
COVID-19 has impacted public and economic health worldwide. To bolster the economy and maintain human life, economic and epidemiological research is vital. Nations have implemented lockdowns intent on slowing the spread of the virus. This research examines how lockdown parameter adjustments can help control a nations fatalities. The study incorporated an SIRD disease model that is simulated over a 200 day period. The goal of the research is to take the SIRD model and use it to create a minimization function that analyzes dynamics that best produce minimal loss of GDP as well as low loss of life in a …
Coevolution Of Hosts And Pathogens In The Presence Of Multiple Types Of Hosts, Evan J. Mitchell
Coevolution Of Hosts And Pathogens In The Presence Of Multiple Types Of Hosts, Evan J. Mitchell
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
How will hosts and pathogens coevolve in response to multiple types of hosts? I study this question from three different perspectives. First, I model a scenario in which hosts are categorized as female or male. Hosts invest resources in maintaining their immune system at a cost to their reproductive success, while pathogens face a trade-off between transmission and duration of infection. Importantly, female hosts are also able to vertically transmit an infection to their newborn offspring. The main result is that as the rate of vertical transmission increases, female hosts will have a greater incentive to pay the cost to …
Expanding Social Network Modeling Software And Agent Models For Diffusion Processes, Patrick Vaden Shepherd
Expanding Social Network Modeling Software And Agent Models For Diffusion Processes, Patrick Vaden Shepherd
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
In an increasingly digitally interconnected world, the study of social networks and their dynamics is burgeoning. Anthropologically, the ubiquity of online social networks has had striking implications for the condition of large portions of humanity. This technology has facilitated content creation of virtually all sorts, information sharing on an unprecedented scale, and connections and communities among people with similar interests and skills. The first part of my research is a social network evolution and visualization engine. Built on top of existing technologies, my software is designed to provide abstractions from the underlying libraries, drive real-time network evolution based on user-defined …

Indicators For Early Assessment Of Palliative Care In Lung Cancer Patients: A Population Study Using Linked Health Data, Maria Kelly, Katie M. O'Brien, Michael Lucey, Kerri Clough-Gorr, Ailish Hannigan
Department of Mathematics Publications
Analysing linked, routinely collected data may be useful to identify characteristics of patients with suspected lung cancer who could benefit from early assessment for palliative care. The aim of this study was to compare characteristics of newly diagnosed lung cancer patients dying within 30 days of diagnosis (short term survivors) with those surviving more than 30 days. To identify indicators for early palliative care assessment we distinguished between characteristics available at diagnosis (age, gender, smoking status, marital status, comorbid disease, admission type, tumour stage and histology) from those available post diagnosis. A second aim was to examine the association between …
A Primer On Noise-Induced Transitions In Applied Dynamical Systems, Eric Forgoston, Richard O. Moore
A Primer On Noise-Induced Transitions In Applied Dynamical Systems, Eric Forgoston, Richard O. Moore
Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Noise plays a fundamental role in a wide variety of physical and biological dynamical systems. It can arise from an external forcing or due to random dynamics internal to the system. It is well established that even weak noise can result in large behavioral changes such as transitions between or escapes from quasi-stable states. These transitions can correspond to critical events such as failures or extinctions that make them essential phenomena to understand and quantify, despite the fact that their occurrence is rare. This article will provide an overview of the theory underlying the dynamics of rare events for stochastic …
