Closed-Form Probability Distribution Of Number Of Infections At A Given Time In A Stochastic Sis Epidemic Model.Pdf, Michael Otunuga Sep 2019

Closed-Form Probability Distribution Of Number Of Infections At A Given Time In A Stochastic Sis Epidemic Model.Pdf, Michael Otunuga

Olusegun Michael Otunuga

We study the effects of external fluctuations in the transmission rate of certain diseases and how these affect the distribution of the number of infected individuals over time. To do this, we introduce random noise in the transmission rate in a deterministic SIS model and study how the number of infections changes over time. The objective of this work is to derive and analyze the closed form probability distribution of the number of infections at a given time in the resulting stochastic SIS epidemic model. Using the Fokker-Planck equation, we reduce the differential equation governing the number of infections to …

A Geomorphic Enthalpy Method: Description And Application To The Evolution Of Fluvial-Deltas Under Sea-Level Cycles, William Anderson, Jorge Lorenzo Trueba, Vaughan Voller Aug 2019

A Geomorphic Enthalpy Method: Description And Application To The Evolution Of Fluvial-Deltas Under Sea-Level Cycles, William Anderson, Jorge Lorenzo Trueba, Vaughan Voller

Jorge Lorenzo-Trueba

Fluvial deltas are composites of two primary sedimentary environments: a depositional fluvial region and an offshore region. The fluvial region is defined by two geomorphic moving boundaries: an alluvial-bedrock transition (ABT), which separates the sediment prism from the non-erodible bedrock basement, and the shoreline (SH), where the delta meets the ocean. The trajectories of these boundaries in time and space define the evolution of the shape of the sedimentary prism, and are often used as stratigraphic indicators, particularly in seismic studies, of changes in relative sea level and the identification of stratigraphic sequences. In order to better understand the relative …

An Examination Of California's 2030 Transportation Electrification Goals, Patricia Rivera Mar 2019

An Examination Of California's 2030 Transportation Electrification Goals, Patricia Rivera

Aurora Ob/Gyn Residents

Climate change and air pollution pose serious consequences including longer

heat waves and sea level rise. California is taking several initiatives to address

these problems, calling for an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by

2050 from 1990 levels. The transportation sector in California has relied

heavily on fossil fuels, significantly contributing to the emissions of greenhouse

gas emissions. As a result, one of the main technologies the state has been

motivating to combat this is the implementation of battery electric vehicles.

These vehicles have not started gaining popularity until recently and there are

still several market barriers that slow …

Finding Positive Solutions Of Boundary Value Dynamic Equations On Time Scale, Olusegun Michael Otunuga Feb 2019

Finding Positive Solutions Of Boundary Value Dynamic Equations On Time Scale, Olusegun Michael Otunuga

Olusegun Michael Otunuga

This thesis is on the study of dynamic equations on time scale. Most often, the derivatives and anti-derivatives of functions are taken on the domain of real numbers, which cannot be used to solve some models like insect populations that are continuous while in season and then follow a difference scheme with variable step-size. They die out in winter, while the eggs are incubating or dormant; and then they hatch in a new season, giving rise to a non overlapping population. The general idea of my thesis is to find the conditions for having a positive solution of any boundary …

OR enables individuals and organizations to make better decisions regarding manufacturing and logistics, service provision and strategy design. My particular interest in OR focuses on the needs of mission-driven and resource-constrained organizations that serve urban communities. In my talk I will describe how OR can use qualitative and quantitative analysis through meaningful engagement of communities to enable creative identification, formulation and solution of complex problems for local impact and social justice. Specific applications I'm currently …

Local Lagged Adapted Generalized Method Of Moments: An Innovative Estimation And Forecasting Approach And Its Applications.Pdf, Olusegun M. Otunuga Jan 2019

Local Lagged Adapted Generalized Method Of Moments: An Innovative Estimation And Forecasting Approach And Its Applications.Pdf, Olusegun M. Otunuga

Olusegun Michael Otunuga

In this work, an attempt is made to apply the Local Lagged Adapted Generalized Method of Moments (LLGMM) to estimate state and parameters in stochastic differential dynamic models. The development of LLGMM is motivated by parameter and state estimation problems in continuous-time nonlinear and non-stationary stochastic dynamic model validation problems in biological, chemical, engineering, energy commodity markets, financial, medical, physical and social sciences. The byproducts of this innovative approach (LLGMM) are the balance between model specification and model prescription of continuous-time dynamic process and the development of discrete-time interconnected dynamic model of local sample mean and variance statistic process (DTIDMLSMVSP). …

Signal Flow Graph Approach To Efficient Dst I-Iv Algorithms, Sirani M. Perera Oct 2018

Signal Flow Graph Approach To Efficient Dst I-Iv Algorithms, Sirani M. Perera

Sirani Mututhanthrige Perera

In this paper, fast and efficient discrete sine transformation (DST) algorithms are presented based on the factorization of sparse, scaled orthogonal, rotation, rotation-reflection, and butterfly matrices. These algorithms are completely recursive and solely based on DST I-IV. The presented algorithms have low arithmetic cost compared to the known fast DST algorithms. Furthermore, the language of signal flow graph representation of digital structures is used to describe these efficient and recursive DST algorithms having (n􀀀1) points signal flow graph for DST-I and n points signal flow graphs for DST II-IV.

Distance-Varying Assortativity And Clustering Of The International Trade Network, Angela Abbate, Luca De Benedictis, Giorgio Fagiolo, Lucia Tajoli May 2018

Distance-Varying Assortativity And Clustering Of The International Trade Network, Angela Abbate, Luca De Benedictis, Giorgio Fagiolo, Lucia Tajoli

Luca De Benedictis

In this paper we study how the topology of the International Trade Network (ITN) changes in geographical space, and along time. We employ geographical distance between countries in the World to filter the links in the ITN, building a sequence of sub-networks, each one featuring trade links occurring at similar distance. We then test if the assortativity
and clustering of ITN subnetworks changes as distance increases, and we nd that this is indeed the case: distance strongly impacts, in a non-linear way, the topology of the ITN.We show that the ITN is disassortative at long distances while it is assortative …

Homogenization In Perforated Domains And With Soft Inclusions, Brandon C. Russell Apr 2018

Homogenization In Perforated Domains And With Soft Inclusions, Brandon C. Russell

Brandon Russell

In this dissertation, we first provide a short introduction to qualitative homogenization of elliptic equations and systems. We collect relevant and known results regarding elliptic equations and systems with rapidly oscillating, periodic coefficients, which is the classical setting in homogenization of elliptic equations and systems. We extend several classical results to the so-called case of perforated domains and consider materials reinforced with soft inclusions. We establish quantitative H^1-convergence rates in both settings, and as a result deduce large-scale Lipschitz estimates and Liouville-type estimates for solutions to elliptic systems with rapidly oscillating, periodic, bounded, and measurable coefficients. Finally, we connect these …

Power-Law Scaling Of Extreme Dynamics Near Higher-Order Exceptional Points, Q. Zhong, Demetrios N. Christodoulides, M. Khajavikhan, K. G. Makris, Ramy El-Ganainy Apr 2018

Power-Law Scaling Of Extreme Dynamics Near Higher-Order Exceptional Points, Q. Zhong, Demetrios N. Christodoulides, M. Khajavikhan, K. G. Makris, Ramy El-Ganainy

Ramy El-Ganainy

We investigate the extreme dynamics of non-Hermitian systems near higher-order exceptional points in photonic networks constructed using the bosonic algebra method. We show that strong power oscillations for certain initial conditions can occur as a result of the peculiar eigenspace geometry and its dimensionality collapse near these singularities. By using complementary numerical and analytical approaches, we show that, in the parity-time (PT) phase near exceptional points, the logarithm of the maximum optical power amplification scales linearly with the order of the exceptional point. We focus in our discussion on photonic systems, but we note that our results apply to other …

Global Stability For A 2n+1 Dimensional Hiv Aids Epidemic Model With Treatments, Olusegun M. Otunuga Mar 2018

Global Stability For A 2n+1 Dimensional Hiv Aids Epidemic Model With Treatments, Olusegun M. Otunuga

Olusegun Michael Otunuga

In this work, we derive and analyze a 2n+1-dimensional deterministic differential equation modeling the transmission and treatment of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) disease. The model is extended to a stochastic differential equation by introducing noise in the transmission rate of the disease. A theoretical treatment strategy of regular HIV testing and immediate treatment with Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) is investigated in the presence and absence of noise. By defining $R_{0,n}$, $R_{t,n}$ and $\mathcal{R}_{t,n}$ as the deterministic basic reproduction number in the absence of ART treatments, deterministic basic reproduction number in the presence of ART treatments and stochastic reproduction number …

An Interval Arithmetic Newton Method For Solving Systems Of Nonlinear Equations, Ronald I. Greenberg, Eldon R. Hansen Jan 2018

An Interval Arithmetic Newton Method For Solving Systems Of Nonlinear Equations, Ronald I. Greenberg, Eldon R. Hansen

Ronald Greenberg

We introduce an interval Newton method for bounding solutions of systems of nonlinear equations. It entails three sub-algorithms. The first is a Gauss-Seidel type step. The second is a real (non-interval) Newton iteration. The third solves the linearized equations by elimination. We explain why each sub-algorithm is desirable and how they fit together to provide solutions in as little as 1/3 to 1/4 the time required by a commonly used method due to Krawczyk.

Seasonal Forcing In Stochastic Epidemiology Models, Lora Billings, Eric Forgoston Nov 2017

Seasonal Forcing In Stochastic Epidemiology Models, Lora Billings, Eric Forgoston

Lora Billings

The goal of this paper is to motivate the need and lay the foundation for the analysis of stochastic epidemiological models with seasonal forcing. We consider stochastic SIS and SIR epidemic models, where the internal noise is due to the random interactions of individuals in the population. We provide an overview of the general theoretic framework that allows one to understand noise-induced rare events, such as spontaneous disease extinction. Although there are many paths to extinction, there is one path termed the optimal path that is probabilistically most likely to occur. By extending the theory, we have identified the quasi-stationary solutions …

Time Varying Parameter Estimation Scheme For A Linear Stochastic Differential Equation.Pdf, Michael Otunuga Aug 2017

Time Varying Parameter Estimation Scheme For A Linear Stochastic Differential Equation.Pdf, Michael Otunuga

Olusegun Michael Otunuga

p, li { white-space: pre-wrap; }
In this work, an attempt is made to estimate time varying parameters in a linear stochastic differential equation. By defining $m_{k}$ as the local admissible sample/data observation size at time $t_{k}$, parameters and state at time $t_{k}$ are estimated using past data on interval $[t_{k-m_{k}+1}, t_{k}]$. We show that the parameter estimates at each time $t_{k}$ converge in probability to the true value of the parameters being estimated. A numerical simulation is presented by applying the local lagged adapted generalized method of moments (LLGMM) method to the stochastic differential models governing prices …

Adoption Of Switchgrass Cultivation For Biofuel Under Uncertainty: A Discrete-Time Modeling Approach, Pralhad Burli, Eric Forgoston, Pankaj Lal, Lora Billings, Bernabas Wolde

Lora Billings

Production of biofuels from cellulosic sources, such as switchgrass, is being encouraged through mandates, incentives, and subsidies. However, uncertainty in future prices coupled with large establishment costs often inhibit their cultivation. Owing to their inability to incorporate uncertainty and dynamic decision-making, standard discounted cash flow techniques are ineffective for analyzing such investments. We formulate a discrete-time binomial framework to model output prices, allowing us to incorporate price uncertainty, stand age, and variable crop yields into the analytical framework. We analyze the feasibility of investments in switchgrass cultivation under varying price transition paths, evaluate the relationship between risk …

A Management Maturity Model (Mmm) For Project-Based Organisational Performance Assessment, Craig Langston, Amir Ghanbaripour

Amir Ghanbaripour

Common sense suggests that organisations are more likely to deliver successful projects if they have systems in place that reflect a mature project environment based on a culture of continuous improvement. This paper develops and discusses a Management Maturity Model (MMM) to assess the maturity of project management organisations through a customisable, systematic, strategic and practical methodology inspired from the seminal work of Darwin, Deming, Drucker and Daniel. The model presented is relevant to organisations, such as construction and engineering companies, that prefer to use the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK™ Guide) published by the Project Management Institute (PMI), …
