Research Reports and Research Bulletins

Along with air and water, soil contributes essential processes to the natural order of global cycles. With the exception of edibles from the sea, virtually everything we, and most other land-based animals, eat is derived from soil. Soil is a storage medium of essential minerals and nutrients for fulfilling our agricultural and nutritional needs. Humans work the soil to provide the basics of food, clothing, and shelter. We also use the soil as a medium to store and discard our waste. Virtually everything we do is in some way connected to soil

Recent Applications Of Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry To Environmental Measurements, Michael A. Janusa Jan 2002

Recent Applications Of Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry To Environmental Measurements, Michael A. Janusa

Faculty Publications

Atomic absorption spectroscopy is very useful for the determination of a large number of elements, especially at trace levels. It is a widely used technique for analysis of a wide variety of sample matrices including biota, soils, and water. Atomic absorption spectroscopy is a very reputable technique that is inexpensive and delivers accurate results even in a complex matrix. This review focuses on the applications of flame atomic absorption spectroscopy to environmental measurements, and is mainly based on papers published from 1999–2002.

Determination Of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulphonates And Their Biodegradation Intermediates By Isocratic Rp-Hplc, Mehmet Akyüz, David J. Roberts Jan 2002

Determination Of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulphonates And Their Biodegradation Intermediates By Isocratic Rp-Hplc, Mehmet Akyüz, David J. Roberts

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

An HPLC method was developed to determine linear alkylbenzene sulphonates (LASs) and their biotransformation products sulphophenyl carboxylates by isocratic chromatography using two C_{18} columns in series. Solid-phase extraction with a (C_{18}) cartridge was employed to isolate LAS from sediment and sewage effluent samples. Sodium perchlorate and ammonium perchlorate were used as ion pair agents. The recovery of the compounds was 94% \pm 2 and 98% \pm 2 respectively for sediment and sewage effluent. It was demonstrated that it is possible to separate LAS compounds and their isomers and homologues using this system.

Water Discharge Models, Seasonal Effluent Mass Loading, And Best Management Practices For Crawfish Ponds, Landon David Parr Jan 2002

Water Discharge Models, Seasonal Effluent Mass Loading, And Best Management Practices For Crawfish Ponds, Landon David Parr

LSU Master's Theses

Nearly 35,000 ha are used to grow crawfish in southwest and south-central Louisiana, and many of these ponds discharge into impaired water bodies. In 2002, proposed guidelines were published by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) assigning effluent limitations and standards for some aquaculture production systems and exempting others (e.g. crawfish ponds). This research had three objectives relative to crawfish ponds: develop water discharge models; final drawdown effluent quality and seasonal mass loading of solids and nutrients; and identification of Best Management Practices (BMPs) that could reduce effluent discharge and improve effluent quality. Models for south-central and southwest Louisiana …
