Derelict Blue Crab Trap Impacts On Marine Fisheries In The Lower York River, Virginia, Kirk J. Havens, Donna Marie Bilkovic, David Stanhope, Kory Angstadt, Carl Hershner, Center For Coastal Resources Management, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science

Reports

In Virginia, an examination of existing derelict trap data retrieved from Chesapeake Bay Multispecies Monitoring and Assessment Program (ChesMMAP) trawl surveys shows the potential effect of derelict traps on fish communities in Virginia waters (Bonzek and Latour 2005). Since 2002, ChesMMAP has attempted to sample 90 stations in the mainstem Chesapeake Bay ranging from the southern edge of the Susquehanna Flats to the Bay mouth in all depths to a minimum of 10 feet during each cruise. There are approximately 4-5 cruises per year and a large mesh bottom trawl is used to capture adult fish of a variety of …

Evaluation Of Striped Bass Stocks In Virginia: Monitoring And Tagging Studies, 2004-2008, 1 September 2005 - 31 August 2006, Philip W. Sadler, John M. Hoenig, Robert E. Harris

Reports

This report presents the results of striped bass (Morone saxatilis) tagging and monitoring activities in Virginia during the period 1 September 2005 through 31 August 2006. It includes an assessment of the biological characteristics of striped bass taken from the 2006 spring spawning run, estimates of annual survival and fishing mortality based on annual spring tagging, and the preliminary results of the fall 2005 study that documents the prevalence of mycobacterial infections of striped bass in Chesapeake Bay. The information contained in this report is required by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and is used to implement a coordinated …

State Of Yorktown Beach 2006, Donna A. Milligan, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., Kevin O'Brien, Christine A. Wilcox

Reports

The Yorktown Public Beach is located on the south side of the York River at Yorktown,Virginia (Figure 1). Recently, it has undergone dramatic transformation with the construction of floating piers, upscale restaurants and shops, parking garage, and additional shore management structures. The main recreational beach is now about 1,600 feet in length. A new section of beach and breakwaters is located upstream of the main recreational shore; this project area is 1,500 ft long which includes property owned by the Waterman’s Museum. The middle section of the shoreline downriver of the Route 17 Coleman Bridge, where the floating piers are …

Monitoring Relative Abundance Of American Shad In Virginia Rivers 2005 Annual Report, John E. Olney, Kristen A. Delano Apr 2006

Monitoring Relative Abundance Of American Shad In Virginia Rivers 2005 Annual Report, John E. Olney, Kristen A. Delano

Reports

Concern about the decline in landings of American shad (Alosa sapidissima) along the Atlantic coast prompted the development of an interstate fisheries management plan (FMP) under the auspices of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Management Program (ASMFC 1999). Legislation enables imposition of federal sanctions on fishing in those states that fail to comply with the FMP. To be in compliance, coastal states are required to implement and maintain fishery-dependent and fishery-independent monitoring programs as specified by the FMP. For Virginia, these requirements include spawning stock assessments, the collection of biological data on the spawning run (e.g., age-structure, sex ratio, and …

Annotated Bibliography Of Research Conducted In The Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Va, Frank M. Parker, William G. Reay

Reports

This annotated bibliography of research conducted within the Reserves boundaries is a living document and updated periodically as new and past publications become available to the Reserve. It is designed to identify and provide an abstract/summary of research publications conducted within the four component sites of the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve - Virginia system. Selected reference material is also available for Reserve relevant work conducted at multiple sites within the York River system.

In order to help facilitate searches, the bibliography is categorized by Reserve components (Goodwin Islands, Catlett Islands, Taskinas Creek, and Sweet Hall Marsh) and by …

Shoreline Evolution Lancaster County, Virginia Chesapeake Bay And Rappahannock River Shorelines 2006, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., Donna A. Milligan, Lyle M. Varnell, Christine A. Wilcox, George R. Thomas, Kevin P. O'Brien Jan 2006

Shoreline Evolution Lancaster County, Virginia Chesapeake Bay And Rappahannock River Shorelines 2006, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., Donna A. Milligan, Lyle M. Varnell, Christine A. Wilcox, George R. Thomas, Kevin P. O'Brien

Reports

Shoreline evolution is the change in shore position through time. In fact, it is the material resistance of the coastal geologic underpinnings against the impinging hydrodynamic (and aerodynamic) forces. Along the shores of Chesapeake Bay and Rappahannock River, it is a process-response system. The processes at work include winds, waves, tides and currents, which shape and modify coastlines by eroding, transporting and depositing sediments. The shore line is commonly plotted and measured to provide a rate of change but it is as important to understand the geomorphic patterns of change. Shore analysis provides the basis to know how a particular …

Tidewater Virginia's Non-Jurisdictional Beach Assessment - 2006, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., Donna A. Milligan, G. R. Thomas, Christine Wilcox, Kevin P. O'Brien Jan 2006

Tidewater Virginia's Non-Jurisdictional Beach Assessment - 2006, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., Donna A. Milligan, G. R. Thomas, Christine Wilcox, Kevin P. O'Brien

Reports

Seventeen of Virginia's coastal localities were analyzed to determine the extent of their beach resources presently not being managed by the Coastal Primary Sand Dunes and Beaches Act1 (Dune Act). Aerial video of the James River (Isle of Wight, Surry, and Prince George, Charles City, James City, and Newport News), the York River (York, New Kent, King William, King and Queen, and Gloucester), the Rappahannock River (Middlesex, Essex, and Richmond), and the Potomac River (Westmoreland, King George, and Stafford) determined the extent of beaches in each locale. The localities studied are shown in Figure 1. The Dune Act manages dunes …
