Nutrient Cycling For Pasture Fertilization Management Of Dairy Farms In The Basque Country (Northern Spain), M Oyanarte, M Rodriguez, G Besga, M Domingo Jun 2024

Nutrient Cycling For Pasture Fertilization Management Of Dairy Farms In The Basque Country (Northern Spain), M Oyanarte, M Rodriguez, G Besga, M Domingo

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

The implementation of the European Agricultural Policy implies a new orientation for the management of dairy farms and, as a result, of pasture fertilization. It is important to develop a new methodology for the calculation of fertilizer recommendations. In order to do this, a model based on P and K nutrient cycles has been used and a computer program has been developed to calculate these cycles and estimate the following parameters: potential pasture yield, yield at the different cuttings, efficiency of excreta recycling in the pasture and efficiency of grass utilization, all these parameters being necessary for the calculation of …

Phosphatase Enzyme-Responsive Synthetic Lipids For Liposome Immolation Towards Enhanced Cargo Release, Justin Thomas Kirby Aug 2023

Phosphatase Enzyme-Responsive Synthetic Lipids For Liposome Immolation Towards Enhanced Cargo Release, Justin Thomas Kirby

Masters Theses

Liposomal nanoscale delivery vehicles have been shown to aid in the delivery of therapeutic cargo due to their ability to encapsulate and improve the pharmacokinetic properties of a range of drug molecules. However, liposome therapeutic potential could be enhanced by exerting greater control over liposome cargo delivery and release. This is being pursued by designing lipids that are able to respond to specific stimuli, particularly those overexpressed in diseased cells. In this thesis, we describe stimuli-responsive liposomes in which the enzyme alkaline phosphatase is used as the stimulus. This trigger was selected since this enzyme is overexpressed in certain cancer …

Effects Of Fertilization And Legume Introduction On The Forage Production Of Brachiaria Decumbens Pastures, M. R. Correa, Tsutomu Kanno, Manuel C. M. Macedo, J. D. G. Santos Junior, L. G. Beretta

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

A grazing experiment was conducted to examine the effects of P and K fertilization and legume introduction on the forage production of Brachiaria decumbens (BD) pastures. Amount of biomass, dry matter production and forage quality were evaluated on BD pastures where three treatments were applied: without maintenance fertilizer (BD-N), with maintenance fertilizer (BD-F), and BD and Stylosanthes guianensis cv. Mineirao (SG) mixture with maintenance fertilizer (BD-FL). The fertilizer application increased an annual average of biomass and the contents of P and K in the leaves. On the other hand, the legume introduction had a positive influence on crude protein and …

Identification Of Phosphorous Loading Point Source Facilities To 303(D) Listed Nutrient Impaired Waters Through Watershed Delineation Using Arcgis For Life Cycle Assessment Applications, John Zimmerman Dec 2021

Identification Of Phosphorous Loading Point Source Facilities To 303(D) Listed Nutrient Impaired Waters Through Watershed Delineation Using Arcgis For Life Cycle Assessment Applications, John Zimmerman

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The work done for this project is part of a larger “life cycle assessment (LCA) of novel electrochemical phosphorus recovery technology at the wastewater treatment plant and U.S. watershed scales” (Morrissey 2019). The goal of that LCA is to determine “environmental impacts of implementing electrochemical struvite recovery at the wastewater treatment plant, U.S watershed, and global scales” (Morrissey 2019). This project’s goal is to identify locations deemed more sensitive to eutrophication impacts. The results will be used as part of the life cycle inventory (LCI) accounting for geographically explicit phosphorus flows. The waters identified as impaired were sourced from the …

The Investigation Of Photocatalytic And Adsorptive Properties Of Humic Acid Grafted Magnetite Nanoparticles For The Remediation Of Arsenic, Selenium And Phosphorous From Water, Mohammad Mamunur Rashid Jun 2018

The Investigation Of Photocatalytic And Adsorptive Properties Of Humic Acid Grafted Magnetite Nanoparticles For The Remediation Of Arsenic, Selenium And Phosphorous From Water, Mohammad Mamunur Rashid

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The crisis of freshwater has been a big concern worldwide. Water contamination that occurs through the discharge of toxic pollutants from different natural and anthropogenic sources have worsened the situation. Adsorption has emerged as a simple and economical water treatment procedure although the challenge is to find the right adsorbent that can efficiently remove the target contaminant followed by their easy recovery from the reaction vessel. In this dissertation, I have focused on the synthesis, characterizations and applications of environmentally compatible and magnetic humic acid coated magnetite nanoparticles (HA-MNP) as a potential adsorbent for water purification.

Phosphate is an essential …

Examining Atmospheric Dust Deposition And Its Effects On Alpine Lakes In The Uinta Mountains, Utah, Oliver J. Squire Sep 2012

Examining Atmospheric Dust Deposition And Its Effects On Alpine Lakes In The Uinta Mountains, Utah, Oliver J. Squire

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The composition and effects of atmospheric dust on remote alpine lakes were investigated using geological and paleolimnolgical techniques. Short cores (< 50 cm long) were retrieved from five lakes on the eastern side of the Uinta Mountains, Utah. Sediment core chronologies are based on 210 Pb and 14C dates. Dust and lake sediment core samples were analyzed for their particle size distribution, mineralogy, and chemistry. Dust was fine grained (< 10 μm) and was enriched (i.e., 50X greater concentrations) in 31 major, minor and trace elements relative to local bedrock material. In lake sediments, changes in the concentrations of key dust elements were recorded beginning in ~ AD 1900. Elements that increased in all five lakes included metals (Bi, Pb, Sb, Sn) and the nutrient P. The metals Cu and Cd also increased in four lakes. These changes are coincident with European settlement, the onset of mining, and the intensification of agriculture. The findings of this thesis show that atmospheric deposition in the Uinta Mountains is unique in composition relative to the last several hundred years. Percentage organics also increased during this period indicating increased productivity. Cladocera community composition recorded changes potentially caused by variations in atmospheric deposition of Ca in this region, although results were inconclusive.

The Influence Of Nutrients And Physical Habitat In Regulating Algal Biomass In Agricultural Streams, Mark D. Munn, Jeffrey Frey, Anthony Tesoriero Jan 2010

The Influence Of Nutrients And Physical Habitat In Regulating Algal Biomass In Agricultural Streams, Mark D. Munn, Jeffrey Frey, Anthony Tesoriero

United States Geological Survey: Water Reports and Publications

This study examined the relative influence of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and habitat on algal biomass in five agricultural regions of the United States. Sites were selected to capture a range of nutrient conditions, with 136 sites distributed over five study areas. Samples were collected in either 2003 or 2004, and analyzed for nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorous) and algal biomass (chlorophyll a). Chlorophyll a was measured in three types of samples, fine-grained benthic material (CHLFG), coarse-grained stable substrate as in rock or wood (CHLCG), and water column (CHLS). Stream and riparian habitat were characterized at each site. TP ranged from …

Algae Bloom In A Lake, David Sanabria Jan 2008

Algae Bloom In A Lake, David Sanabria

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

The objective of this paper is to determine the likelihood of an algae bloom in a particular lake located in upstate New York. The growth of algae in this lake is caused by a high concentration of phosphorous that diffuses to the surface of the lake. Our calculations, based on Fick's Law, are used to create a mathematical model of the driving force of diffusion for phosphorous. Empirical observations are also used to predict whether the concentration of phosphorous will diffuse to the surface of this lake within a specified time and under specified conditions.

Climate Change Manipulations Show Antarctic Flora Is More Strongly Affected By Elevated Nutrients Than Water, J. Wasley, Sharon A. Robinson, C. E. Lovelock, M. Popp Jul 2006

Climate Change Manipulations Show Antarctic Flora Is More Strongly Affected By Elevated Nutrients Than Water, J. Wasley, Sharon A. Robinson, C. E. Lovelock, M. Popp

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Climate change is expected to affect the high latitudes first and most severely, rendering Antarctica one of the most significant baseline environments for the study of global climate change. The indirect effects of climate warming, including changes to the availability of key environmental resources, such as water and nutrients, are likely to have a greater impact upon continental Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems than the effects of fluctuations in temperature alone. To investigate the likely impacts of a wetter climate on Antarctic terrestrial communities a multi-season, manipulative field experiment was conducted in the floristically important Windmill Islands region of East Antarctica. Four …

Two-dimensional electron systems fabricated from a single layer of P-donors have been lithographically confined to nanometer scale in lateral directions. The electronic transport of such quasi-one-dimensional systems with and without a perpendicular magnetic field was characterized at cryogenic temperatures. Experimental data fit well with two-dimensional weak localization and interaction theory when the phase coherence length is shorter than the smaller dimension of the confinement. Below a transition temperature the wire conductance saturates.

Phosphorous δ-doping layers were fabricated in silicon by PH3 deposition at room temperature, followed by low-temperature Si epitaxy.Scanning tunneling microscope images indicate large H coverage, and regions of c(2×2) structure. Hall data imply full carrier activation with mobility<40 cm2/V s when the surface coverage is ≲0.2 ML. Conductivity measurements show a ln(T) behavior at low temperatures, characteristic of a high-density two-dimensional conductor. Possible future applications to atom-scale electronics and quantum computation are briefly discussed.

Winter And Summer Sediment Nutrient Exchange Rates In Hillsborough Bay, Florida, City Of Tampa Department Of Sanitary Sewers Sep 1986

Winter And Summer Sediment Nutrient Exchange Rates In Hillsborough Bay, Florida, City Of Tampa Department Of Sanitary Sewers

Reports

Winter and summer in-situ measurements of sediment oxygen demand (SOD) and nutrient exchange rates (NERs) were taken from sandy and muddy sediments in Hillsborough Bay during 1986. The summer-mud SOD rate of 0.23 g 02/m2/hr was roughly twice the summer-sand, winter-sand and winter-mud SOD rates. In general, nutrient flux rates into the water column were usually greater from mud relative to sand, and during the summer compared to the winter. Reservations in the application of the SOD/NER data and recommendations for future SOD/NER measurements are discussed.
