Geochemical Analysis Of Basement Rock As A Potential Metal Source In Mississippi Valley-Type Ores, Southern Midcontinent U.S.A., Mackenzie Margaret Moorhead May 2024

Geochemical Analysis Of Basement Rock As A Potential Metal Source In Mississippi Valley-Type Ores, Southern Midcontinent U.S.A., Mackenzie Margaret Moorhead

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) ores are epigenetic, sedimentary hydrothermal base metal deposits that exist worldwide with type localities in the midcontinent United States. These Permian-aged sulfide ores represent an extraordinary concentration of economic metals, Pb and Zn. Ore deposits occur in vast districts that have a rich mining history. The Pb and Zn from these deposits account for 24% of worldwide reserves. The geologic processes responsible for MVT ore genesis are not fully understood, especially the sourcing of ore constituents. In the midcontinent, the Ouachita Orogeny expelled saline hydrothermal brines in response to high rates of subsidence. These fluids migrated through …

Using Lake Sediment Chemistry In The Exploration For Nickel Laterite Deposits In Tropical Regions, Gabriela Yvonne Ramirez Jan 2022

Using Lake Sediment Chemistry In The Exploration For Nickel Laterite Deposits In Tropical Regions, Gabriela Yvonne Ramirez

Masters Theses

"Developing reliable geochemical indicators to guide the search for ore deposits is a long-standing goal. This particularly applies to tropical regions that are often heavily vegetated which hampers boots-on-the ground exploration efforts. Here we present the preliminary results of a study that investigates the usefulness of lake sediment chemistry in the exploration for nickel laterite ore deposits in tropical regions using Lake Izabal, Guatemala, as a case study. Lake Izabal’s catchment area contains Ni laterite deposits along its northern shore, whereas no Ni-laterite discoveries have been made in the south except for a Ni mine in the southern region that …

Alteration Reactions In A Hornblende-Biotite-Anthophyllite-Fluid System: Implications For Cu-Au Ore Deposits, James Mitchell Lightner Jan 2021

Alteration Reactions In A Hornblende-Biotite-Anthophyllite-Fluid System: Implications For Cu-Au Ore Deposits, James Mitchell Lightner

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

High-grade porphyry Cu-Au ore deposits are typically contained in the potassic alteration zone, which forms through the alteration of preexisting country rock by a magmatic volatile phase (MVP) exsolved from an igneous intrusion. The MVP is a H2O dominant phase that contains high concentrations of NaCl, KCl, FeCl2, HCl, sulfur (as H2S or SO2) and minor concentrations of metals. The minerals in the potassic alteration zone are predominantly K-feldspar and biotite with a shreddy texture. Shreddy biotite forms from the replacement of prismatic-tabular shaped hornblende crystals, resulting in a characteristic shreddy texture. The alteration of hornblende to biotite can neutralize …

Ni And Fe Isotope Fractionation During Weathering And The Formation Of Ni Laterite Ore Deposits In The Philippines, Congxi Zhu Sep 2019

Ni And Fe Isotope Fractionation During Weathering And The Formation Of Ni Laterite Ore Deposits In The Philippines, Congxi Zhu

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Weathering processes on Ni-rich ultramafic rocks in tropical areas produce laterites that become exploitable for Ni mining. To better understand these processes, samples were collected stratigraphically with water samples from several Ni mines in the Philippines and studied for Ni and Fe isotope compositions. This study found that Ni isotope fractionation takes place during the formation of Ni-enriched minerals (goethite), when light Ni isotopes are preferentially incorporated into new minerals formed, leaving heavy Ni isotopes in groundwater. The Δ60NiLimonite-Bedrock is up to -0.19 ± 0.32‰. Even though Fe is partitioned with redox state change during these reactions, …

The Paleozoic Sedimentary Rocks Of The Ouachita Mountains And Their Genetic Relationship To The Mississippi Valley-Type Mineralization In The Southern Ozark Region: Insights From Radiogenic Pb Isotopes And Trace Elements Studies, Christophe Wakamya Simbo Aug 2019

The Paleozoic Sedimentary Rocks Of The Ouachita Mountains And Their Genetic Relationship To The Mississippi Valley-Type Mineralization In The Southern Ozark Region: Insights From Radiogenic Pb Isotopes And Trace Elements Studies, Christophe Wakamya Simbo

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cluster of Pb and/or Zn deposits of the well-known Tri-State and Northern Arkansas Mississippi Valley Type (MVT) districts located north of the Arkoma basin and the Ouachita fold-thrust belt in north America are genetically connected to the Pennsylvanian-Permian Ouachita orogeny which triggered a South-North topographic gradient flow of basinal brines, leaching metal rich sediments en route. The objective of the research is twofold. First, to ascertain whether the organic-rich shales and sandstones from the study area provided metals during the mineralization event, which was coeval with the Ouachita orogeny. Second, to assess the depositional environment of the potential source rocks, …

Stable Cu, Fe, And Ni Isotopic Systematics Of The Sudbury Offset Dikes And Associated Rocks, Peter Christoffersen

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The stable isotope ratio compositions of Fe, Ni, and Cu (δ56Fe, δ60Ni, and δ65Cu) are reported for the first time in rocks from the Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC). Massive sulfide ores, Quartz Diorite (QD), Inclusion bearing Quartz Diorite (IQD), and rocks from members of the Main Mass of the SIC were analyzed. The objective was to better understand the origin(s) and source(s) of the Offset Dikes and the associated sulfide mineralization. Based on stable isotope ratios and petrographic observations, two distinct types of sulfide mineralization hosted within the Offset Dikes are identified. Massive sulfide …

Geology And Geochemistry Of The Sierra Blanca Rare Earth Complex, Sierra Blanca, Texas, Nicole Kyger

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

With an increasing standard of living comes an increase in demand for high tech goods, environmentally friendly (green) and military technologies, and the inherent need to procure the necessary raw materials. Demand for the rare earth elements (REE) is on the rise, and there is no foreseeable decline in the need for accessible deposits. Between 2010 and present, the United States Congress has heard numerous reports on the importance of REE, and in 2012 the Department of Defense(DoD)declared REE a critical resource, with implications for national security. The Sierra Blanca laccoliths, 150 kilometers southeast of El Paso, TX represent a …

Geology Of The Pre-Cambrian Rocks Of The Northern End Of The Sandia Mountains, Bernalillo And Sandoval Counties, New Mexico, Philip T. Hayes Jun 1951

Geology Of The Pre-Cambrian Rocks Of The Northern End Of The Sandia Mountains, Bernalillo And Sandoval Counties, New Mexico, Philip T. Hayes

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Most of the pre-Cambrian metamorphic rocks of the northern end of the Sandia Mountains crop out on and adjacent to a prominent spur, called the Rincon, which lies to the west of the main mountain mass. These metamorphic rocks which consist of quartzite, schist, and greenstone are considered to be the result of moderate regional metamorphism of clastic sedimentary rocks and possibly some basic flows and stills. These rocks are here tentatively named the Juan Tabo sequence and are Archeozoic or early Proterozoic age. The Sandia granite, which lies to the east and south of the Juan Tabo sequence, was …

Geology Of The Southern Ladron Mountains, Socorro County, New Mexico, E.A. Noble Apr 1950

Geology Of The Southern Ladron Mountains, Socorro County, New Mexico, E.A. Noble

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Ladron Mountains are in a fault-block range consisting in large part of Pre-Cambrian rocks. They are flanked on the west by Paleozoic sediments and elsewhere by Tertiary and Quaternary deposits. The Pre-Cambrian rocks of the southern Ladron Mountains consist of a thick sequence of quartzite and schist which has been granitized by a sub-adjacent intrusion to such a degree that only remnants of unaltered quartzite and schist remain, the remainder of the rocks being largely paragneiss and para-granite. The nature of the intrusion is not known, but it is suggested that it may have been at least partly formed …
