Polyglot programming is a common practice in modern software development. This practice is often considered useful to create software by allowing developers to use whichever language they consider most well suited for the different parts of their software. Despite this ubiquity of polyglot programming there is no empirical research into how this practice affects software developers and their productivity. In this dissertation, after reviewing the state of the art in programming language and linguistic research pertaining to the topic, this matter is investigated by way of two empirical studies with 109 and 171 participants solving programming tasks. This paper presents a new manufacturing and control paradigm for developing soft ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) actuators for soft robotics applications. First, an additive manufacturing method that exploits the fused-filament (3D printing) process is described to overcome challenges with existing methods of creating custom-shaped IPMC actuators. By working with ionomeric precursor material, the 3D-printing process enables the creation of 3D monolithic IPMC devices where ultimately integrated sensors and actuators can be achieved. Second, Bayesian optimization is used as a learning-based control approach to help mitigate complex time-varying dynamic effects in 3D-printed actuators. Smart materials and soft robotics have been seen to be particularly well-suited for developing biomimetic devices and are active fields of research. In this study, the design and modeling of a new biomimetic soft robot is described. Initial work was made in the modeling of a biomimetic robot based on the locomotion and kinematics of jellyfish. Modifications were made to the governing equations for jellyfish locomotion that accounted for geometric differences between biology and the robotic design. This dissertation examines the concurrency approaches for a standard, unmodified B-Tree which is one of the more complex data structures. This includes the coarse grained, fine-grained locking, and the lock-free approaches. The basic industry standard coarse-grained approach is used as a base-line for comparison to the more advanced fine-grained and lock-free approaches. The fine-grained approach is explored and algorithms are presented for the fine-grained B-Tree insertion and deletion. There are two main components of malware analysis. One is static malware analysis and the other is dynamic malware analysis. Static malware analysis involves examining the basic structure of the malware executable without executing it, while dynamic malware analysis relies on examining malware behavior after executing it in a controlled environment. Static malware analysis is typically done by modern anti-malware software by using signature-based analysis or heuristic-based analysis.

We review important algorithmic results for the coverage of 1.5D terrain by point guards. Finding the minimum number of point guards for covering 1.5D terrain is known to be NP-hard. We propose two approximation algorithms for covering 1.5D terrain by a fewer number of point guards. The first algorithm (Greedy Ranking Algorithm) is based on ranking vertices in term of number of visible edges from them. The second algorithm (Greedy Forward Marching Algorithm) works in greedy manner by scanning the terrain from left to right. Both algorithms are implemented in Python 2.7 programming language.

Almost every processor supports Time Stamp Counter (TSC), which is a hardware register that increments its value every clock cycle. Due to its high resolution and accessibility, TSC is now widely used for a variety tasks that need time measurements such as wall clock, code benchmarking, or metering hardware usage for account billing.

However, if not carefully configured and interpreted, TSC-based time measurements can yield inaccurate readings. The primary objective of the work presented in this dissertation was to evaluate the change patterns, i.e., a gradual change known as the trend, and an abrupt change known as the shift, of multiple hydro-climatological variables, namely, streamflow, snow water equivalent (SWE), temperature, precipitation, and potential evapotranspiration (PET), in association with the large-scale oceanic-atmospheric climate signals. A power-down system has an on-state, an off-state, and a finite or infinite number of intermediate states. In the off-state, the system uses no energy and in the on-state energy it is used fully. Intermediate states consume only some fraction of energy but switching back to the on-state comes at a cost. Previous work has mainly focused on asymptotic results for systems with a large number of states. Undergraduate minority retention and graduation rates in STEM disciplines is a nationally recognized challenge for workforce growth and diversification. The Benjamin Banneker Scholars Program (BBSP) was a five-year undergraduate study developed to increase minority student retention and graduation rates at an HBCU. The program structure utilized a family model as a vehicle to orient students to the demands of college. Program activities integrated best K-12 practices and workforce skillsets to increase academic preparedness and career readiness. Findings revealed that a familial atmosphere improved academic performance, increased undergraduate research, and generated positive perceptions of faculty mentoring.
