On The Interpretation Of Multi-Year Estimates Of The American Community Survey As Period Estimates, Chaitra Nagaraja, Tucker Mcelroy
On The Interpretation Of Multi-Year Estimates Of The American Community Survey As Period Estimates, Chaitra Nagaraja, Tucker Mcelroy
Chaitra H Nagaraja
The rolling sample methodology of the American Community Survey introduces temporal distortions, resulting in Multi-Year Estimates that measure aggregate activity over three or five years. This paper introduces a novel, nonparametric method for quantifying the impact of viewing multi-year estimates as functions of single-year estimates belonging to the same time span. The method is based on examining the changes to confidence interval coverage. As an application of primary interest, the interpretation of a multi-year estimate as the simple average of single-year estimates is a viewpoint that underpins the published estimates of sampling variability. Therefore it is vital to ascertain the …

Field Validation Of Dem And Gis Derived Longitudinal Stream Profiles, Kathryn Schroeder, Eric Peterson, Toby Dogwiler
Field Validation Of Dem And Gis Derived Longitudinal Stream Profiles, Kathryn Schroeder, Eric Peterson, Toby Dogwiler
Eric Wade Peterson
Longitudinal stream profiles provide valuable information concerning geomorphic features and energy states in a stream. Traditionally, stream profiles have been generated by field surveying or topographic map analysis. The continued growth of digital data and Geographic Information Systems (GISs) provide another method by which to achieve stream profile generation. This work examines the effectiveness of digital data, digital elevation models (DEM), and GIS to construct stream profiles. To determine the most effective and accurate data for profile generation, profiles were created using 1-meter (1-m) and 3-meter (3-m) DEMs developed from LiDAR data. Additionally, stream profiles were created from unfilled DEMs …

Promoting Similarity Of Model Sparsity Structures In Integrative Analysis Of Cancer Genetic Data, Shuangge Ma
Promoting Similarity Of Model Sparsity Structures In Integrative Analysis Of Cancer Genetic Data, Shuangge Ma
Shuangge Ma
In profiling studies, the analysis of a single dataset often leads to unsatisfactory results because of the small sample size. Multi-dataset analysis utilizes information across multiple independent datasets and outperforms single-dataset analysis. Among the available multi-dataset analysis methods, integrative analysis methods aggregate and analyze raw data and outperform meta-analysis methods, which analyze multiple datasets separately and then pool summary statistics. In this study, we conduct integrative analysis and marker selection under the heterogeneity structure, which allows different datasets to have overlapping but not necessarily identical sets of markers. Under certain scenarios, it is reasonable to expect some similarity of identified …

Cepsim: A Simulator For Cloud-Based Complex Event Processing, Wilson Higashino, Miriam Capretz, Luiz Bittencourt
Wilson A Higashino
As one of the Vs defining Big Data, data velocity brings many new challenges to traditional data processing approaches. The adoption of cloud environments in complex event processing (CEP) systems is a recent architectural style that aims to overcome these challenges. Validating cloud-based CEP systems at the required Big Data scale, however, is often a laborious, error-prone, and expensive task. This article presents CEPSim, a new simulator that has been developed to facilitate this validation process. CEPSim extends CloudSim, an existing cloud simulator, with an application model based on directed acyclic graphs that is used to represent continuous CEP queries. …

Optimal Restricted Estimation For More Efficient Longitudinal Causal Inference, Edward Kennedy, Marshall Joffe, Dylan Small
Optimal Restricted Estimation For More Efficient Longitudinal Causal Inference, Edward Kennedy, Marshall Joffe, Dylan Small
Edward H. Kennedy
Efficient semiparametric estimation of longitudinal causal effects is often analytically or computationally intractable. We propose a novel restricted estimation approach for increasing efficiency, which can be used with other techniques, is straightforward to implement, and requires no additional modeling assumptions.
Computational Estimation Of Pka Values, Paul Seybold, George Shields
Computational Estimation Of Pka Values, Paul Seybold, George Shields
Berhane Temelso
The pKa of a compound is one of its most important properties as it defines the specific molecular forms that will prevail under different pH conditions. Accordingly, accurate means for computational estimation of this property are of particular interest. Two main techniques for this purpose have emerged: (1) a first principles approach that relies on basic physical concepts and requires high computational resources, but is independent of experimental input and (2) a linear free energy or quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) approach that combines molecular structural and energetic descriptors with available experimental pKa data to reduce computational demand and yield good …

Longitudinal Profile And Sediment Mobility As Geomorphic Tools To Interpret The History Of A Fluviokarst Stream System, John Woodside, Eric Peterson, Toby Dogwiler
Longitudinal Profile And Sediment Mobility As Geomorphic Tools To Interpret The History Of A Fluviokarst Stream System, John Woodside, Eric Peterson, Toby Dogwiler
Eric Wade Peterson
The complex drainage systems within karst settings can result in atypical longitudinal profiles. Features, such as cave entrances, can be expressed as anomalous ‘bumps’ in the longitudinal profile of a stream if downcutting has continued upstream of the area in which the water is pirated to the subsurface. Horn Hollow, a fluviokarst valley located in Carter Caves State Park Resort in northeastern Kentucky, was examined for these types of features. The objectives of this study were to determine if sediment mobility can be used as a proxy for anomalous areas along the profile of the valley and if detailed cross-sections …

The Role Of Histidine Residues In The Specificity Of The Human Zinc Transporter Hzip4, Robert Dempski, Sagar Antala, Elizabeth Bafaro
Robert E. Dempski
ZIP transporters, named after the zinc regulated (Zrt) and iron regulated (Irt) transport proteins, are essential for zinc and iron translocation across cellular membranes. These proteins function to increase the cytosolic concentration of transition metals. While both zinc and iron are essential micronutrients which are required for the structure and/or function of hundreds of cellular proteins, the molecular mechanism of ZIP transporters is not well understood. Complicating mechanistic studies is the observation that the concentration of free zinc and iron is nano to picomolar.

Implantable Polymer/Metal Thin Film Structures For The Localized Treatment Of Cancer By Joule Heating, Nima Rahbar, Kwabena Kan-Dapaah, Christian Theriault, Wole Soboyejo

This paper presents an implantable polymer/metal alloy thin film structure for localized post-operative treatment of breast cancer. A combination of experiments and models is used to study the temperature changes due to Joule heating by patterned metallic thin films embedded in poly-dimethylsiloxane. The heat conduction within the device and the surrounding normal/cancerous breast tissue is modeled with three-dimensional finite element method (FEM). The FEM simulations are used to explore the potential effects of device geometry and Joule heating on the temperature distribution and lesion (thermal dose). The FEM model is validated using a gel model that mimics biological media. The …
