Learning Bregman Distance Functions For Semi-Supervised Clustering, Lei Wu, Chu Hong Hoi, Rong Jin, Jianke Zhu, N. Yu Jan 2012

Learning Bregman Distance Functions For Semi-Supervised Clustering, Lei Wu, Chu Hong Hoi, Rong Jin, Jianke Zhu, N. Yu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Learning distance functions with side information plays a key role in many data mining applications. Conventional distance metric learning approaches often assume that the target distance function is represented in some form of Mahalanobis distance. These approaches usually work well when data are in low dimensionality, but often become computationally expensive or even infeasible when handling high-dimensional data. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme of learning nonlinear distance functions with side information. It aims to learn a Bregman distance function using a nonparametric approach that is similar to Support Vector Machines. We emphasize that the proposed scheme is …

Multi-Party Multi-Period Supply Chain Coordination, Thin Yin Leong, Michelle Lee Fong Cheong Jan 2012

Multi-Party Multi-Period Supply Chain Coordination, Thin Yin Leong, Michelle Lee Fong Cheong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We apply combinatorial auction as a coordination mechanism to smooth demands placed on suppliers' limited production capacities, allowing several manufacturers to share common suppliers effectively. Products are bidders bidding for parts from suppliers, consuming their capacities in different time periods. The fourth party logistic (4PL) provider acts as the auctioneer to coordinate bids and perform price iterations. We leverage on the strong links between the Lagrangian relaxation method and combinatorial auction, where the Lagrange multipliers serve as the supply capacity reserve prices, to balance the demand and supply of capacities. To prevent cyclic behaviour and to increase convergence speed, we …

Mining Diversity On Social Media Networks, Lu Liu, Feida Zhu, Meng Jiang, Jiawei Han, Lifeng Sun, Shiqiang Yang Jan 2012

Mining Diversity On Social Media Networks, Lu Liu, Feida Zhu, Meng Jiang, Jiawei Han, Lifeng Sun, Shiqiang Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The fast development of multimedia technology and increasing availability of network bandwidth has given rise to an abundance of network data as a result of all the ever-booming social media and social websites in recent years, e.g., Flickr, Youtube, MySpace, Facebook, etc. Social network analysis has therefore become a critical problem attracting enthusiasm from both academia and industry. However, an important measure that captures a participant’s diversity in the network has been largely neglected in previous studies. Namely, diversity characterizes how diverse a given node connects with its peers. In this paper, we give a comprehensive study of this concept. …

Robust Local Search For Solving Rcpsp/Max With Durational Uncertainty, Na Fu, Hoong Chuin Lau, Pradeep Varakantham, Fei Xiao Jan 2012

Robust Local Search For Solving Rcpsp/Max With Durational Uncertainty, Na Fu, Hoong Chuin Lau, Pradeep Varakantham, Fei Xiao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Scheduling problems in manufacturing, logistics and project management have frequently been modeled using the framework of Resource Constrained Project Scheduling Problems with minimum and maximum time lags (RCPSP/max). Due to the importance of these problems, providing scalable solution schedules for RCPSP/max problems is a topic of extensive research. However, all existing methods for solving RCPSP/max assume that durations of activities are known with certainty, an assumption that does not hold in real world scheduling problems where unexpected external events such as manpower availability, weather changes, etc. lead to delays or advances in completion of activities. Thus, in this paper, our …

Robust Distributed Scheduling Via Time Period Aggregation, Shih-Fen Cheng, John Tajan, Hoong Chuin Lau Jan 2012

Robust Distributed Scheduling Via Time Period Aggregation, Shih-Fen Cheng, John Tajan, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we evaluate whether the robustness of a market mechanism that allocates complementary resources could be improved through the aggregation of time periods in which resources are consumed. In particular, we study a multi-round combinatorial auction that is built on a general equilibrium framework. We adopt the general equilibrium framework and the particular combinatorial auction design from the literature, and we investigate the benefits and the limitation of time-period aggregation when demand-side uncertainties are introduced. By using simulation experiments on a real-life resource allocation problem from a container port, we show that, under stochastic conditions, the performance variation …

A Hybridized Lagrangian Relaxation And Simulated Annealing Method For The Course Timetabling Problem, Aldy Gunawan, Kim Leng Poh Jan 2012

A Hybridized Lagrangian Relaxation And Simulated Annealing Method For The Course Timetabling Problem, Aldy Gunawan, Kim Leng Poh

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper describes a timetabling problem at universities, where a master course timetable is given extrinsically and conflicts due to students' course enrollment do not need to be considered. A solver for the problem, which integrates both teacher assignment and course scheduling, is described. An initial solution is obtained by a mathematical programming approach based on Lagrangian relaxation. This solution is further improved by a simulated annealing algorithm. The proposed method has been tested on instances from a university in Indonesia, as well as on several randomly generated datasets, and the corresponding computational results are reported.

Topic Based Query Suggestions For Video Search, Kong-Wah Wan, Ah-Hwee Tan, Joo-Hwee Lim, Liang-Tien Chia Jan 2012

Topic Based Query Suggestions For Video Search, Kong-Wah Wan, Ah-Hwee Tan, Joo-Hwee Lim, Liang-Tien Chia

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Query suggestion is an assistive technology mechanism commonly used in search engines to enable a user to formulate their search queries by predicting or completing the next few query words that the user is likely to type. In most implementations, the suggestions are mined from query log and use some simple measure of query similarity such as query frequency or lexicographical matching. In this paper, we propose an alternative method of presenting query suggestions by their thematic topics. Our method adopts a document-centric approach to mine topics in the corpus, and does not require the availability of a query log. …

Factors Affecting Short-Term Oxygen Variability In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Hypoxic Zone, Brenda Leroux Babin Jan 2012

Factors Affecting Short-Term Oxygen Variability In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Hypoxic Zone, Brenda Leroux Babin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Open-water continuous monitoring of DO concentrations at a single station (C6) in the Gulf of Mexico from 1989 to 2008 afforded an excellent opportunity to characterize short-term oxygen variability and to estimate the relative importance of key physical and biological factors controlling the development, persistence, and dissipation of hypoxia. I investigated temporal trends in three aspects of short-term DO variability: respiration rates (i.e., how quickly bottom waters become hypoxic), persistence of hypoxia, and the dissipation of hypoxia (i.e., re-aeration events). I identified the range of respiration rates present at the study site, and showed how these rates vary throughout the …

Implications Of Geothermal History On Microbial Gas Generation And Coalbed Methane Production In The Ninilchik Field, Cook Inlet Basin, Alaska, Eric M. Hart Jan 2012

Implications Of Geothermal History On Microbial Gas Generation And Coalbed Methane Production In The Ninilchik Field, Cook Inlet Basin, Alaska, Eric M. Hart

LSU Master's Theses

Coalbed methane (CBM) production operations atop the Ninilchik anticline of Cook Inlet, Alaska pose intriguing questions regarding the nature of biogenic gas generation in a thermally complex forearc basin setting. This thermal complexity stems, in part, from its up to 30,000 ft thick Tertiary section, comprised of braided stream alluvium and expansive, interbedded coal deposits. Rapid accumulation of cold, glacial strata is documented as being capable of regionally suppressing the elevated heat flux values expected within a forearc basin. In addition, beds with high organic content, such as the coal layers, act as natural insulators from basinal heat flux and …

Evaluation Of Growth Rates And Establishment Patterns Of Water-Elm (Planera Aquatica) And Baldcypress (Taxodium Distichum) In Response To Hydrologic And Climatic Conditions At Catahoula Lake, Louisiana, Sanjeev Joshi Jan 2012

Evaluation Of Growth Rates And Establishment Patterns Of Water-Elm (Planera Aquatica) And Baldcypress (Taxodium Distichum) In Response To Hydrologic And Climatic Conditions At Catahoula Lake, Louisiana, Sanjeev Joshi

LSU Master's Theses

Hydrologic alterations frequently lead to vegetation changes in floodplain ecosystems. In Louisiana, there has been an expansion of water-elm (Planera aquatica) and to a lesser extent baldcypress (Taxodium distichum) at Catahoula Lake, a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. Water-elm and baldcypress both are flood tolerant species; baldcypress growth is known to be influenced by hydrologic conditions more than climate. The expansion of these woody trees has reduced herbaceous vegetation valuable for waterfowl. In this study, I tested two hypotheses that establishment of water-elm trees into the lake increased after the construction of water control structures in the nearby Black River …

Comprehensive Planning And Resilience: A Study Of Louisiana Parishes After Hurricane Katrina, Mary Paille Jan 2012

Comprehensive Planning And Resilience: A Study Of Louisiana Parishes After Hurricane Katrina, Mary Paille

LSU Master's Theses

When hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit in 2005, widespread devastation was felt in over half of the parishes in the state. More than 200,000 homes were damaged and more than 1500 people lost their lives. During this transitionary period, communities were vulnerable and looked for rebuilding leadership. As part of a post-catastrophe resilience movement, the Louisiana Recovery Authority formulated a 50-year regional plan for recovering south Louisiana called Louisiana Speaks. This planning process opened up an opportunity to reach those communities that otherwise may not have considered planning or how it could help them prepare for future events. This places …

The Effects Of Carbon On Nitrogen Transformations In Restored Wetland And Wastewater Soils, Jared M. Theriot Jan 2012

The Effects Of Carbon On Nitrogen Transformations In Restored Wetland And Wastewater Soils, Jared M. Theriot

LSU Master's Theses

Since the industrialization of the Haber-Bosch process in the 1940’s, anthropogenic activity has nearly doubled the Earth’s nitrogen fixation. Furthermore, nitrate has become the number one groundwater contaminant in the United States and has harmful effects such as eutrophication, algal blooms, and pollution of drinking water. Soils from two sites influenced by high nitrate loading were examined to determine their biogeochemical integrity. First, the Loosahatchie Bar, located northwest of Memphis, Tennessee, is influenced by excess surface water nitrate loading by the Mississippi River. The Loosahatchie Bar is a newly restored wetland that now has similar hydrologic influence to an upstream …

Atr-Ftir Studies On The Kinetics Of Dimethylarsinic Acid (Dma) Surface Complexation With Iron(Oxyhydr)Oxides, Julia Tofan-Lazar Miss

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) is an organoarsenical compound that, along with monomethylarsonic acid, poses a health and an environmental risk, and a challenge to the energy industry. Little is known about the surface chemistry of DMA at the molecular level with materials relevant to geochemical environments and industrial sectors. The surface chemistry of phosphorus and arsenic compounds in their organic and inorganic forms is of great interest due to its role in controlling their transport, bioaccessibility and speciation. This thesis reports the first in-situ and surface-sensitive rapid kinetic studies on the adsorption and desorption of DMA to and from Fe-(oxyhydr)oxide films …

Synthesis And Investigation Of The Liquid Crystalline Properties Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Joseph A. Paquette Jan 2012

Synthesis And Investigation Of The Liquid Crystalline Properties Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Joseph A. Paquette

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In this thesis, the synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of a series of novel substituted dibenz[a,c]anthracenes is reported. Specifically, a series of hexaalkoxydibenz[a,c]anthracenes were prepared and found not to exhibit a mesophase. In contrast, when substituents are introduced on the aromatic core, columnar mesophases are observed over broad temperature ranges. A series substituted derivatives was prepared and their mesomorphic properties compared. In general, electron-withdrawing substituents promote broad mesophase temperature ranges, as do larger substituents. The liquid crystalline phase is a result of the electronic effects, size and shape of the substituents in the 10 and 13 positions.

We also synthesized …

Density Functional Theory Calculations On Hydrated Dimethylarsinic Acid And Iron Oxide Clusters, Adrian Adamescu Jan 2012

Density Functional Theory Calculations On Hydrated Dimethylarsinic Acid And Iron Oxide Clusters, Adrian Adamescu

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Dimethylarsinic Acid (DMA) or (CH3)2AsO2H is an important organoarsenical compound detected in arsenic speciation studies of environmental samples and synthesized during pyrolysis of oil shale. DMA was used historically as a herbicide on large agricultural fields and can be detected in the leachates of landfills rich in waste containing arsenic such as glass, alloys, and semiconductors, as well as biologically pre-treated municipal solid waste. Under certain soil conditions DMA can become bio-available and has the potential to be recycled to more toxic inorganic forms of arsenic. Bioavailability of DMA is largely controlled by the …

A combination of the inclusive diffractive cross section measurements made by the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations at HERA is presented. The analysis uses samples of diffractive deep inelastic ep scattering data at a centre-of-mass energy √s= 318 Gev where leading protons are detected by dedicated spectrometers. Correlations of systematic uncertainties are taken into account, resulting in an improved precision of the cross section measurement which reaches 6 % for the most precise points. The combined data cover the range 2.5 < Q2 < 200 GeV2 in photon virtuality, 0.00035 < xP < 0.09 in proton fractional momentum loss, 0.09 <{pipe}t{pipe}< 0.55 GeV2 in squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex and 0.0018 < β

Changing Land Use On Unproductive Soils, Andrew Blake, Mike Clarke, Angela Stuart-Street Jan 2012

Changing Land Use On Unproductive Soils, Andrew Blake, Mike Clarke, Angela Stuart-Street

Resource management technical reports

A three year study completed in 2010 examined farming systems in the north-eastern agricultural region and eastern wheatbelt of Western Australia which experienced a succession of variable seasons from 2000. This culminated in severe drought in 2006 and 2007. At that time, farmers experienced labour shortages and declining terms of trade triggered by cost inflation outpacing growth in commodity prices. As a result, farm business equity was eroded as farm debt escalated. This left many farm businesses in a highly vulnerable state. At the time of the study many farmers were facing an uncertain future.

These experiences, coupled with a …

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Many studies have documented the growing fragility of a majority of the globe's ecosystems. Policymakers and resource managers often frame such ecosystem challenges as primarily about protecting natural systems in rural areas. However, that conception misses a key part of the story: the rapid growth of urbanizing areas. Home to more than 50 percent of the world's human population for the first time in modern history, urbanizing regions concentrate pressure on ecosystem services, which are necessary to sustain healthy urban living conditions and vibrant commerce. This dramatic urbanization presents both challenges and opportunities for novel ecosystem services management. A transdisciplinary …

Crisis Response Information Networks, Shan L. Pan, Gary Pan, Dorothy Leidner Jan 2012

Crisis Response Information Networks, Shan L. Pan, Gary Pan, Dorothy Leidner

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

In the past two decades, organizational scholars have focused significant attention on how organizations manage crises. While most of these studies concentrate on crisis prevention, there is a growing emphasis on crisis response. Because information that is critical to crisis response may become outdated as crisis conditions change, crisis response research recognizes that the management of information flows and networks is critical to crisis response. Yet despite its importance, little is known about the various types of crisis information networks and the role of IT in enabling these information networks. Employing concepts from information flow and social network theories, this …
