An easier and more expedient synthesis of 2,6-(BrCH2C6H4)2-4-I-C6H3 (2) is reported. This material allowed easy synthesis of the new pincer ligand precursor 2,6-(4-CH3C6H4SCH2C6H4)2-4-I-C6H3 (3) in 87% yield. Compound 3 reacts with Pd2(dba)3 to give the new palladium pincer complex 4. Compound 4 has been fully characterized, including structural characterization by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The results of the crystallographic work on 4 reveal a twisted type pincer complex not unlike related terphenyl pincer complexes.
The European Court Of Human Rights Ruling Against Britain's Policy Of Keeping Fingerprints & Dna Samples Of Criminal Suspects, K. Michael, Clive Harfield
The European Court Of Human Rights Ruling Against Britain's Policy Of Keeping Fingerprints & Dna Samples Of Criminal Suspects, K. Michael, Clive Harfield
Clive Harfield
In England and Wales, the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (the PACE) contained powers for the taking of fingerprints, and samples in the form of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). In 2001, Section 64(1A) of the PACE was substituted with Section 82 of the Criminal Justice and Police Act. The change to legislation meant that a suspect of a crime would have their fingerprints and samples permanently stored on the police national computer (PNC) even after having been acquitted. This paper critically analyses the circumstances of the landmark case of S. AND MARPER V. THE UNITED KINGDOM in two different contexts …

We study the strong coupling of light and nanoparticle suspensions and their surface tension effect in capillaries. We show experimentally and theoretically that increasing the intensity of a narrow laser beam passing through a capillary far away from the surface results in a significant decrease in the fluid level. The underlying mechanism relies on light-induced redistribution of nanoparticles in the bulk and the surface of the fluid, facilitating continuous optical control over the surface position. The experiments manifest optical control from afar over properties of fluid surfaces.

Polymeric Ionic Liquids As Co2 Selective Sorbent Coatings For Solid-Phase Microextraction, Qichao Zhao, Jonathan C. Wajert, Jared L. Anderson
Jared L. Anderson
Two polymeric ionic liquids (PIL) were synthesized and employed as sorbent coatings in solid-phase microextraction (SPME) for the selective extraction of CO2. The two coatings, poly(1-vinyl-3-hexylimidazolium) bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide [poly(VHIM-NTf2)] and poly(1-vinyl-3-hexylimidazolium) taurate [poly(VHIM-taurate)], exhibited varied selectivity toward CO2 due to functional groups within in the PIL that imparted different mechanisms of CO2 capture. Extraction efficiencies were compared to those of two commercial SPME fibers [poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and Carboxen−PDMS]. The poly(VHIM-NTf2) PIL fiber exhibited comparable extraction efficiency at high CO2 pressure compared to the Carboxen−PDMS fiber, even though the PIL-based fibers possessed much smaller film thicknesses. Calibration curves generated in pure CO2 …

Towards Extending The Equilibrium Of Discrimination In The Internet To Its Fringes, Matthias Bärwolff
Towards Extending The Equilibrium Of Discrimination In The Internet To Its Fringes, Matthias Bärwolff
Matthias Bärwolff
The core insight to the history of the dynamics of limitations, restrictions, and discriminations on the Internet is that they are largely a corollary to the futility of obtaining an entirely 'neutral' design of the Internet that is both robust and scalable. The question then is how to arrange the necessary volume of discriminations so as to obtain a design as value free as possible, for only such a design can be in line with the premise of stipulating no values other than (1) good order at large, and (2) the appreciation of the pursuit of local purposes by individuals. …

Returns To Selecting Value Stocks In Australia – The Aby Filters, Bruce Vanstone, Tobias Hahn, Gavin Finnie
Bruce Vanstone
The development of the Financial Crisis throughout 2008 and into 2009 has caused many fund managers to question their Growth based investment models. Interest appears to be again rekindled in the traditional Value based models, where investment decisions are based on sound company fundamentals rather than abstract future growth expectations. This paper reviews a specific set of value based filters for selecting undervalued stocks which appeared in a series of papers published soon after the 2000 Dot-Com debacle. This paper documents the performance of these filters in the Australian stockmarket.

Organizational Values, Social Responsibility, And Corporate Citizenship: The Case Of Nevada State College, Grace S. Thomson
Dr. Grace S. Thomson
Organizational Values, Social Responsibility, and Corporate Citizenship Organizations contribute more than products and services to the society. The generation of jobs, creation of wealth and satisfaction of needs are only a portion of the influence that organizations have in a community. Likewise, organizations are increasingly engaging in social responsible initiatives to respond to the concerns of their various stakeholders (Aguilera, Rupp, Williams, & Ganapathi, 2007). Organizations with a genuine interest for social responsibility and citizenship possess value systems that articulate and integrate these social motives into their corporate strategy (Graber & Kilpatrick, 2008). Higher education institutions in the United States …

The analytical and numerical solutions of continuous linear quadratic optimal control problem are presented. Numerical solutions are obtained by shooting method and the conjugate gradient method(CGM) via quadratic programming of the discretized continuous optimal control problem. Our results show that both analytical and numerical solutions agree favourably.

Asymptotic Stability Of Small Bound States In The Discrete Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation, Pg Kevrekidis, De Pelinovsky, A Stefanov
Asymptotic Stability Of Small Bound States In The Discrete Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation, Pg Kevrekidis, De Pelinovsky, A Stefanov
Panos Kevrekidis
Asymptotic stability of small bound states in one dimension is proved in the framework of a discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation with septic and higher power-law nonlinearities and an external potential supporting a simple isolated eigenvalue. The analysis relies on the dispersive decay estimates from Pelinovsky and Stefanov [J. Math. Phys., 49 (2008), 113501] and the arguments of Mizumachi [J. Math. Kyoto Univ., 48 (2008), pp. 471–497] for a continuous nonlinear Schrödinger equation in one dimension. Numerical simulations suggest that the actual decay rate of perturbations near the asymptotically stable bound states is higher than the one used in the analysis.
Memory Reconsolidation For Natural Language Processing, Kum Tu, David Cooper, Hava Siegelmann
Memory Reconsolidation For Natural Language Processing, Kum Tu, David Cooper, Hava Siegelmann
Hava Siegelmann
We propose a model of memory reconsolidation that can output new sentences with additional meaning after refining information from input sentences and integrating them with related prior experience. Our model uses available technology to first disambiguate the meanings of words and extracts information from the sentences into a structure that is an extension to semantic networks. Within our long-term memory we introduce an action relationships database reminiscent of the way symbols are associated in brain, and propose an adaptive mechanism for linking these actions with the different scenarios. The model then fills in the implicit context of the input and …
Thermocapillary Effects In Driven Dewetting And Self-Assembly Of Pulsed Laser-Irradiated Metallic Films, Mikhail Khenner
Thermocapillary Effects In Driven Dewetting And Self-Assembly Of Pulsed Laser-Irradiated Metallic Films, Mikhail Khenner
Mikhail Khenner
A mathematical model for the evolution of pulsed laser-irradiated, molten metallic films has been developed using the lubrication theory. The heat transfer problem that incorporates the absorbed heat from a single laser beam or the interfering laser beams is solved analytically. Using this temperature field, we derive the 3D long-wave evolution PDE for the film height. To get insights into dynamics of dewetting, we study the 2D version of the evolution equation by means of a linear stability analysis and by numerical simulations. The stabilizing and destabilizing effects of various system parameters, such as the reflectivity, the peak laser beam …

Mining Data From Multiple Software Development Projects, Huanjing Wang, Taghi M. Khoshgoftaar, Kehan Gao, Naeem Seliya
Dr. Huanjing Wang
A large system often goes through multiple software project development cycles, in part due to changes in operation and development environments. For example, rapid turnover of the development team between releases can influence software quality, making it important to mine software project data over multiple system releases when building defect predictors. Data collection of software attributes are often conducted independent of the quality improvement goals, leading to the availability of a large number of attributes for analysis. Given the problems associated with variations in development process, data collection, and quality goals from one release to another emphasizes the importance of …

Dense networks of short-range radars capable of mapping storms and detecting atmospheric hazards are described. Composed of small X-band (9.4 GHz) radars spaced tens of kilometers apart, these networks defeat the Earth curvature blockage that limits today's long-range weather radars and enables observing capabilities fundamentally beyond the operational state-of-the-art radars. These capabilities include multiple Doppler observations for mapping horizontal wind vectors, subkilometer spatial resolution, and rapid-update (tens of seconds) observations extending from the boundary layer up to the tops of storms. The small physical size and low-power design of these radars permits the consideration of commercial electronic manufacturing approaches and …

Recent Unprecedented Tree-Ring Growth In Bristlecone Pine At The Highest Elevations And Possible Causes, Matthew W. Salzer, Malcolm K. Hughes, Andrew G. Bunn, Kurt F. Kipfmueller
Andrew G. Bunn
Great Basin bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva) at 3 sites in western North America near the upper elevation limit of tree growth showed ring growth in the second half of the 20th century that was greater than during any other 50-year period in the last 3,700 years. The accelerated growth is suggestive of an environmental change unprecedented in millennia. The high growth is not overestimated because of standardization techniques, and it is unlikely that it is a result of a change in tree growth form or that it is predominantly caused by CO2 fertilization. The growth surge has occurred only in …

Polarimetry Studies For The Npdgamma Experiment At The Sns, Jonny Dadras
Jonny Dadras
The NPDGamma collaboration aims to measure a parity-violating directional gamma-ray asymmetry from the capture of polarized cold neutrons on protons. The asymmetry, predicted to be on the order of 50 ppb, is a result of the weak interaction between mesons and nucleons during the neutron capture reaction. The experiment is designed to make a statistics limited measurement of the asymmetry at the level of about 20%. The experiment will be carried out at the Fundamental neutron Physics Beamline (FnPB) at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). The neutron beam is polarized by a super-mirror polarizer. A 9.5 G magnetic field guides …

Modeling In Microbial Batch Culture And Its Parameter Identification, Zhaohua Gong, Chongyang Liu, Enmin Feng
Chongyang Liu
In this paper, the nonlinear dynamical system of batch fermentation is investigated in the bioconversion of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol(1,3-PD) by Klebsiella pneumoniae. Taking account of the kinetic behavior and experimental results in the batch cultures, we propose a two-stage dynamical system to formulate the fermentation process. Then some properties of the proposed system are proved. In view of the big errors between observations and numerical simulation results, we subsequently establish a parameter identification model to identify parameters in the system. The identifiability of the model is also discussed. Finally, in order to find the optimal parameters of the identification model, …

Palaeoecology: A Tool To Improve The Management Of Australian Estuaries, Krystyna M. Saunders, Kathryn H. Taffs
Dr Kathryn H Taffs
Addressing environmental problems in estuaries is a worldwide problem. Establishing benchmarks and targets for management is critical, whether the aim is conservation, restoration or ‘sustainable wise use’. Palaeoecological techniques have rapidly improved during the past decade, particularly with advances in methods that allow high resolution quantitative assessments of environmental change, allowing pre-impact conditions, the rate, extent and direction of change, and range of natural variability to be determined. Australian estuarine ecosystems are qualitatively different to the often more well-studied estuaries in North America and Europe, which means site-specific studies of Australian estuaries are needed to inform management. While a potentially …
