An Isolated, Recently Shocked Ism Cloud In The Cygnus Loop Supernova Remnant, D. J. Patnaude, R. A. Fesen, J. C. Raymond, N. A. Levenson

Dartmouth Scholarship

Spatially resolved ROSAT X-ray and ground-based optical data for the southwestern region of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant (SNR) reveal in unprecedented detail the very early stages of a blast-wave interaction with an isolated interstellar cloud. Numerous internal cloud shock fronts near the upstream flow and along the cloud edges are visible optically as sharp filaments of enhanced H emission. Faint X-ray emission is seen along a line of Balmer-dominated shock filaments north and south of the cloud with an estimated X-ray gas temperature of 1.2 106 K (0.11 keV), corresponding to a shock velocity of 290 km s1 . …

Mass Profile Of The Infall Region Of The Abell 2199 Supercluster, K. Rines, M. J. Geller, A. Diaferio, A. Mahdavi, J. J. Mohr, G. Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

Using a redshift survey of 1323 galaxies (1092 new or remeasured) in a region of 95 deg2 centered on the nearby galaxy cluster Abell 2199, we analyze the supercluster containing A2199, A2197, and an X-ray group. The caustic technique accurately reproduces the true mass profiles of simulated simple superclusters (i.e., superclusters for which the virial mass of one cluster is 2–10 times the virial mass of all other clusters in the supercluster). We calculate the masses of the two main components of A2197 (A2197W and A2197E) by using archival X-ray observations and demonstrate that the A2199 supercluster is simple (the …

A New Accelerator Mass Spectrometry System For 14c-Quantification Of Biochemical Samples, Ted J. Ognibene, Graham Bench, Tom A. Brown, Graham F. Peaslee, John S. Vogel

Faculty Publications

A compact accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) system that meets our requirements for View the MathML source-quantification of biochemical samples is described. The spectrometer occupies approximately 5 m2 of floor space and can measure >300 samples per day with 3% precision. A long diffuse gas cell is used to destroy interfering molecules and to charge exchange injected negative ions. System sensitivity is <1 amol View the MathML source/mg carbon on milligram-sized samples with a dynamic range that extends over 4 orders magnitude. All components, with the exception of the ion source, are commercially available and the system operates reliably with low maintenance.

Redshift-Distance Survey Of Early-Type Galaxies. I. The Enearc Cluster Sample*, M. Bernardi, M. V. Alonso, L. N. Da Costa, C. N. A. Willmer, A. Wegner Jun 2002

Redshift-Distance Survey Of Early-Type Galaxies. I. The Enearc Cluster Sample*, M. Bernardi, M. V. Alonso, L. N. Da Costa, C. N. A. Willmer, A. Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

This paper presents data on the ENEARc subsample of the larger ENEAR survey of nearby early-type galaxies. The ENEARc galaxies belong to clusters and were specifically chosen to be used for the construction of a D-n-sigma template. The ENEARc sample includes new measurements of spectroscopic and photometric parameters (redshift, velocity dispersion, line index Mg-2, and the angular diameter d(n)), as well as data from the literature. New spectroscopic data are given for 229 cluster early-type galaxies in 28 clusters. Objective criteria, based on catalogs of groups of galaxies derived from complete redshift surveys of the nearby universe, are used to …

Temporal Variation In Community Composition, Pigmentation, And Fv/Fm Of Desert Cyanobacterial Soil Crusts, M. A. Bowker, S. C. Reed, J. Belnap, S. L. Phillips Jan 2002

Temporal Variation In Community Composition, Pigmentation, And Fv/Fm Of Desert Cyanobacterial Soil Crusts, M. A. Bowker, S. C. Reed, J. Belnap, S. L. Phillips

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

Summers on the Colorado Plateau (USA) are typified by harsh conditions such as high temperatures, brief soil hydration periods, and high UV and visible radiation. We investigated whether community composition, physiological status, and pigmentation might vary in biological soil crusts as a result of such conditions. Representative surface cores were sampled at the ENE, WSW, and top microaspects of 20 individual soil crust pedicels at a single site in Canyonlands National Park, Utah, in spring and fall of 1999. Frequency of cyanobacterial taxa, pigment concentrations, and dark adapted quantum yield (Fv/Fm) were measured for each core. The frequency of major …

Safeguarding Species, Languages, And Cultures In The Time Of Diversity Loss: From The Colorado Plateau To Global Hotspots, Gary Paul Nabhan, Patrick Pynes, Tony Joe

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

Hotspots of biodiversity have become priority areas for land conservation initiatives, oftentimes without recognition that these areas are hotspots of cultural diversity as well. Using the Colorado Plateau ecoregion as a case study, this inquiry (1) outlines the broad geographic patterns of biological diversity and ethnolinguistic diversity within this ecoregion; (2) discusses why these two kinds of diversity are often influenced by the same geographic and historic factors; and (3) suggests what can be done to integrate traditional ecological knowledge of indigenous peoples into multicultural conservation collaborations.

Data Sets

The Bay Study Group was created by the City of Tampa in 1976 to monitor the effects of pollution abatement that occurred in Hillsborough Bay when the city’s wastewater treatment plant was upgraded from primary to advanced treatment in 1979. The Bay Study Group documented a remarkable restoration of water quality parameters and biological indicators in Hillsborough Bay from the mid 1980s until 2009, when it was disbanded. This zip Geodatabase file contains the photo point locations, aerial photos, and flight maps for the year 2002.
