We consider the hyperfine structure, the atomic spectrum, and the decay channels of the bound μ+μ- system (dimuonium). The annihilation lifetimes of low-lying atomic states of the system lie in the 10-12 s range. The decay rates could be measured by detection of the decay products (high-energy photons or electron-positron pairs). The hyperfine-structure splitting of the dimuonic system and its decay rate are influenced by electronic vacuum polarization effects in the far timelike asymptotic region. This constitutes a previously unexplored kinematic regime. We evaluate next-to-leading-order radiative corrections to the decay rate of low-lying atomic states. We …

Temperature-Dependence Studies Of Photorefractive Effect In A Low Glass-Transition-Temperature Polymer Composite, Bogdan Swedek, Ning Cheng, Yiping Cui, Jaroslaw W. Zieba, Jeffrey G. Winiarz, Paras N. Prasad Dec 1997

Temperature-Dependence Studies Of Photorefractive Effect In A Low Glass-Transition-Temperature Polymer Composite, Bogdan Swedek, Ning Cheng, Yiping Cui, Jaroslaw W. Zieba, Jeffrey G. Winiarz, Paras N. Prasad

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The temperature dependence of the photorefractive effect in a polymer composite containing poly(9-vinycarbazole), tricresyl phosphate, buckminsterfullerene, and 4-(N,N-diethylamino)-β-nitrostyrene is presented. The photoconductive, electro-optic and photorefractive properties of the material have been studied in the temperature range of 22-61°C. An apparent increase of electro-optic modulation with temperature and its eventual saturation is observed. This behavior is attributed to the temperature activated orientational mobility of the second-order nonlinear chromophores. The polarization anisotropy between the p- and s-polarized readouts is consistent with what would be expected on the basis of directly measured effective electro-optic coefficients. By correlating the electro-optic value with the diffraction …

Microphysical properties of jet exhaust aerosol and contrails were studied in the near field of the emitting aircraft for different fuel sulfur contents. Measurements were performed behind two different aircraft (ATTAS test aircraft of type VFW 614 and Airbus A310-300) using fuels with sulfur contents of 6 ppm and 2700 ppm, respectively. At closest approach (plume age < 1 s), the total number concentrations exceeded the measuring range of the condensation particle counter, i.e., N > 105 cm-3. The concentration of the dry accumulation mode aerosol, i.e., predominantly soot particles, was not affected by the fuel sulfur content. At a plume age of 10 s, an increase in total number concentration (Dp > 0.01 μm) by a …

Nonlinear Response Theory: Transport Coefficients For Driving Fields Of Arbitrary Magnitude, Paul Ernest Parris, Marek Kus, David H. Dunlap, Vasudev M. Kenkre

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A theory of nonlinear response is developed for driving fields of arbitrary magnitude. Exact and usable expressions are provided for electrical and thermal mobility, and related transport coefficients, in terms of correlation functions of the system. A generalization into the nonlinear domain is provided of the Wiedemann-Franz law connecting electrical and thermal response and of the Einstein relation relating the diffusion constant and the mobility.

We present measurements of S K S splitting at 28 digital seismic stations and 35 analog stations in the Baikal rift zone, Siberia, and adjacent areas, and at 17 stations in the East African Rift in Kenya and compare them with previous measurements from the Rio Grande Rift of North America. Fast directions in the inner region of the Baikal rift zone are distributed in two orthogonal directions, NE and NW, approximately parallel and perpendicular to the NE strike of the rift. In the adjacent Siberian platform and northern Mongolian fold belt, only the rift-orthogonal fast direction is observed. In …

Scanning Probe Nanolithography Of Conducting Metal Oxides, Chen-Jen Hung, Jianian Gui, Jay A. Switzer Sep 1997

Scanning Probe Nanolithography Of Conducting Metal Oxides, Chen-Jen Hung, Jianian Gui, Jay A. Switzer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The scanning tunneling microscope (STM) was used to form nanometer-size holes in thin conducting films of thallium (III) oxide. Hole formation was only observed when the process was performed in humid ambient conditions. The hole formation was attributed to localized electrochemical etching reactions beneath the STM tip. etching reactions consistent with the observed hole formation are a direct electrochemical reduction of thallium (III) oxide to soluble T1 (I) at negative sample bias, and local reduction of pH at positive sample bias. The fastest etching was observed at negative sample bias. Holes as small as 10 nm or as large as …

The Convergence Of The Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equations To That Of The Euler Equations, R. Temam, X. Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this article, we establish partial results concerning the convergence of the solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations to that of the Euler equations. Convergence is proved in space dimension two under a physically reasonable assumption, namely that the gradient of the pressure remains bounded at the boundary as the Reynolds number converges to infinity.

Quantum Coulomb Glass Within A Hartree-Fock Approximation, Frank Epperlein, Michael Schreiber, Thomas Vojta Sep 1997

Quantum Coulomb Glass Within A Hartree-Fock Approximation, Frank Epperlein, Michael Schreiber, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the influence of electron-electron interactions on the electronic properties of disordered materials. In particular, we consider the insulating side of a metal-insulator transition where screening breaks down and the electron-electron interaction remains long ranged. The investigations are based on the quantum Coulomb glass, a generalization of the classical Coulomb glass model of disordered insulators. The quantum Coulomb glass is studied by decoupling the Coulomb interaction by means of a Hartree-Fock approximation and exactly diagonalizing the remaining localization problem. We investigate the behavior of the Coulomb gap in the density of states when approaching the metal-insulator transition and study …

Attractors For Nonautonomous Nonhomogeneous Navier-Stokes Equations, A. Miranville, X. Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper our aim is to derive an upper bound on the dimension of the attractor of the family of processes associated to the Navier-Stokes equations with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions depending on time. We consider two-dimensional flows with prescribed quasiperiodic (in time) tangential velocity at the boundary, and obtain an upper bound which is polynomial with respect to the viscosity.

The x-ray-absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra obtained at the cerium LIII edge of the Ce2Fe17-xAlx solid solutions and Ce2Fe14Si3, show two absorption peaks characteristic of the 4f1 and 4f0 configurations of cerium, peaks which indicate that cerium is in a mixed valent state in these compounds. All the XANES spectra have been consistently and excellently fit with one sigmoidal function and two Gaussianbroadened Lorentzian functions. The cerium spectroscopic valence obtained from the relative areas of the two peaks decreases from 3.64 to 3.43 between x=0 and …

Lamb Shift Of 3p And 4p States And The Determination Of Α, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Gerhard Soff, Peter J. Mohr Sep 1997

Lamb Shift Of 3p And 4p States And The Determination Of Α, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Gerhard Soff, Peter J. Mohr

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The fine-structure interval of P states in hydrogenlike systems can be determined theoretically with high precision, because the energy levels of P states are only slightly influenced by the structure of the nucleus. Therefore a measurement of the fine structure may serve as an excellent test of QED in bound systems, or alternatively as a means of determining the fine-structure constant a with very high precision. In this paper an improved analytic calculation of higher-order binding corrections to the one-loop self-energy of 3P and 4P states in hydrogenlike systems with a low nuclear charge number Z is presented. The method …

A Bayesian Nonlinear Inversion Of Seismic Body-Wave Attenuation Factors, Stephen S. Gao Aug 1997

A Bayesian Nonlinear Inversion Of Seismic Body-Wave Attenuation Factors, Stephen S. Gao

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

It is a well-known fact that the uncertainties in measuring relative attenuation factors within a local or regional seismic network are usually high, due to noise of different kinds and unrealistic assumptions. Numerical experiments using nine synthetic seismograms, created using t* values ranging from 0.1 to 0.9 sec, reveal that the commonly used spectral ratio method is strongly affected by the selection of data processing parameters such as width of the spectral smoothing window, reference station, and so on. The numerical experiments demonstrate that a Bayesian nonlinear inversion approach that directly matches the spectra is better at finding the correct …

Small Angle Neutron Scattering From Nanodroplet Aerosols, Barbara Ellen Wyslouzil, Janice L. Cheung, Gerald Wilemski, Reinhard Strey Jul 1997

Small Angle Neutron Scattering From Nanodroplet Aerosols, Barbara Ellen Wyslouzil, Janice L. Cheung, Gerald Wilemski, Reinhard Strey

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report the first measurements of small angle neutron scattering from an aerosol. The aerosol was produced by expanding a D2O-N2 vapor mixture in a supersonic Laval nozzle. The neutron wavelength (0.5 nm) is less than the typical particle size, and we can therefore derive the average particle size (5-8 nm), number density (~1012 cm-3), and polydispersity of the size distribution directly from the experimental data rather than by inferring them from complex models of particle formation and growth. We also predict and observe a Doppler shift-induced anisotropy in the scattering pattern due to …

Concentrations And Isotope Ratios Of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon In Denitrifying Environments, C. Nascimento, Eliot A. Atekwana, R. V. Krishnamurthy

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We measured the concentration and isotope ratio of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in groundwater associated with denitrification (Corg + NO3- = CO2 + N2) in an agriculturally impacted site in southwestern Michigan. Samples with the lowest nitrate levels also had low dissolved oxygen content and were more depleted in δ13C than background groundwater. All the samples had DIC concentrations in excess of titratable alkalinity. The magnitude of this DIC in excess of alkalinity correlated with a decreasing δ13C attesting to the presence of CO2 derived from organic carbon. Carbon …

Stereoselective Adsorptive Bubble Process, Daniel W. Armstrong, Yubing Tang May 1997

Stereoselective Adsorptive Bubble Process, Daniel W. Armstrong, Yubing Tang

Process for enriching the concentration of an enantiomer (or a diastereomer) in a mixture of optically active isomers. The process includes preparing a solution containing the mixture of the optically active isomers and a chiral collector in which the chiral collector and the enantiomer (or diastereomer) are associated with each other. A gas is bubbled through a pool of the solution to form a foam, the surfaces of the bubbles in the foam having the chiral collector and the enantiomer (or diastereomer) preferentially adsorbed thereto so that the concentration ratio of the optically active isomers at said bubble surfaces differs …

Chaotic Behavior And Damage Spreading In The Glauber Ising Model: A Master Equation Approach, Thomas Vojta May 1997

Chaotic Behavior And Damage Spreading In The Glauber Ising Model: A Master Equation Approach, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the sensitivity of the time evolution of a kinetic Ising model with Glauber dynamics against the initial conditions. To do so we apply the "damage spreading" method, i.e., we study the simultaneous evolution of two identical systems subjected to the same thermal noise. We derive a master equation for the joint probability distribution of the two systems. We then solve this master equation within an effective-field approximation which goes beyond the usual mean-field approximation by retaining the fluctuations though in a quite simplistic manner. The resulting effective-field theory is applied to different physical situations. It is used to …

Focussed aircraft measurements have been carried out over the eastern North Atlantic to search for signals of air traffic emissions in the flight corridor region. Observations include NO, NO2, HNO3, SO2, O3, H2O, total condensation nuclei (CN), and meteorological parameters. A flight pattern with constant-altitude north-south legs across the major North Atlantic air traffic tracks was flown. Signatures of air traffic emissions were clearly detected for NOx, SO2, and CN with peak concentrations of 2 ppbv, 0.25 ppbv, and 500 cm-3, respectively, exceeding background …

A series of Nd2Fe17-xMnx solid solutions with x values between 0 and and 6 were prepared and analyzed using magnetic measurements, neutron diffraction, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. All of the Nd2Fe17-xMnx samples crystallized in the Th2Zn17-x-type rhombohedral structure. The lattice parameters and unit cell volumes decrease with increasing manganese content up to ∼ x equal to 2, and then increase for higher manganese content. The magnetizations of Nd2Fe17-xMnx decrease with increasing manganese content and Nd2Fe17-xMnx is paramagnetic …

An Analysis Of Iron-Iron Interatomic Distances In Several Rare Earth Transition Metal Intermetallics, G. K. Marasinghe, Peter C. Ezekwenna, William Joseph James, Z. Hu, William B. Yelon Apr 1997

An Analysis Of Iron-Iron Interatomic Distances In Several Rare Earth Transition Metal Intermetallics, G. K. Marasinghe, Peter C. Ezekwenna, William Joseph James, Z. Hu, William B. Yelon

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

As a part of a systematic study of the dependence of iron-iron exchange interactions on near neighbor iron-iron distances in rare earth transition metal magnetic materials, we have conducted a statistical analysis of interatomic distances in Nd2Fe17, Nd2Fe17N3, and Nd2Fe14B. Results, in general, support the notion that larger near neighbor iron-iron distances promote higher Curie temperatures. In this work, special attention has been paid to the expansion of the Nd2Fe17 lattice due to interstitial nitrogenation and the accompanying increase in the Curie temperature. …

Studies Of V, Nb, Cr, And Zr Substituted 2:17 Compounds And Their Carbides Using Neutron Diffraction, H. Luo, Z. Hu, Muguo Chen, William B. Yelon, G. K. Marasinghe, Peter C. Ezekwenna, William Joseph James, W. C. Chang, S. H. Tsai

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Samples of Nd2Fe17-xTxCy with T=V, Nb, Cr, and Zr were prepared by melting of the constituent elements including C and studied by neutron diffraction. Comparing with their uncarbided counterparts, we found that the substituents transfer, more or less, from the 6c site to the 18f and 18h sites with the introduction of C atoms. This behavior appears to relate to the electronegativities between the C atoms and the early transition series elements because the 18f and 18h sites are near neighbors of the interstitial C site. However, the C effects in the V. …

Nonanalytic Behavior Of The Spin Susceptibility In Clean Fermi Systems, Dietrich Belitz, Theodore R. Kirkpatrick, Thomas Vojta Apr 1997

Nonanalytic Behavior Of The Spin Susceptibility In Clean Fermi Systems, Dietrich Belitz, Theodore R. Kirkpatrick, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The wave vector and temperature-dependent static spin susceptibility, Xs(Q, T), of clean interacting Fermi systems is considered in dimensions 1 ≤ d ≤ 3. We show that at zero temperature Xs is a nonanalytic function of |Q|, with the leading nonanalyticity being |Q|d-1 for 1 < d < 3, and Q2ln|Q| for d = 3. For the homogeneous spin susceptibility we find a nonanalytic temperature dependence Td-1 for 1 < d < 3. We give qualitative mode-mode coupling arguments to that effect, and corroborate these arguments by a perturbative calculation to second order in the electron-electron interaction amplitude. The implications of this, in particular for itinerant ferromagnetism, are discussed. We also point out the relation between our findings and established perturbative results for one-dimensional systems, as well as for the temperature dependence of Xs(Q = 0) in d = 3.

An Introduction To Algorithmic Information Theory: Its History And Some Examples, George Markowsky

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The goal of this paper is to provide a simple introduction to Algorithmic Information Theory (AIT) that will highlight some of the main ideas without presenting too many details. More technical treatments of these ideas can be found in References [1], [2], [3] and [4], which are listed at the end of the paper. The main ideas of Algorithmic Information Theory will be presented using English as the underlying programming language. The presentation illustrates the fact that the same arguments can be expressed in any other reasonable language and that the main results have a robust universality across all reasonable …

Monte Carlo Simulations Of The Dynamical Behavior Of The Coulomb Glass, Torsten Wappler, Thomas Vojta, Michael Schreiber Mar 1997

Monte Carlo Simulations Of The Dynamical Behavior Of The Coulomb Glass, Torsten Wappler, Thomas Vojta, Michael Schreiber

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the dynamical behavior of disordered many-particle systems with long-range Coulomb interactions by means of damage-spreading simulations. In this type of Monte Carlo simulation one investigates the time evolution of the damage, i.e., the difference of the occupation numbers of two systems, subjected to the same thermal noise. We analyze the dependence of the damage on temperature and disorder strength. For zero disorder the spreading transition coincides with the equilibrium phase transition, whereas for finite disorder we find evidence for a dynamical phase transition well below the transition temperature of the pure system.

Elimination Of Supply Harmonics, Stephen L. Clark, P. Famouri, W. L. Cooley

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The price of the extensive use of power electronic devices is becoming clear: increasing harmonic "pollution." The greater amount of harmonics being introduced into power distribution systems is of concern to both power consumers and power companies. First, a brief look is taken at background information which describes harmonic sources, effects, and characteristics. Then the evolution of the harmonics elimination approaches of current compensation and active filtering are discussed to give some insight into the directions that research is taking.

Disconjugacy And Transformations For Symplectic Systems, Martin Bohner, Ondřej Došlý Jan 1997

Disconjugacy And Transformations For Symplectic Systems, Martin Bohner, Ondřej Došlý

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We examine transformations and diconjugacy for general symplectic systems which include as special cases linear Hamiltonian difference systems and Sturm-Liouville difference equations of higher order. We give a Reid roundabout theorem for these systems and also for reciprocal symplectic systems. Particularly, we investigate a connection between eventual disconjugacy of linear Hamiltonian difference systems and their reciprocals. Finally, we present a dinsconjugacy-preserving transformation of a Sturm-Liouville equation of higher order which transforms this equation into another one of the same order.
