Giant Suppression Of Flux-Flow Resistivity In Heavy-Ion Irradiated Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 Films: Influence Of Linear Defects On Vortex Transport, R.C. Budhani, M. Suenaga, Sy_Hwang Liou
Sy-Hwang Liou Publications
A large shift of the onset of flux-flow resistivity and the irreversibility line Hirr (T) to higher temperatures is observed in Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 films containing linear defects created by Ag+21 ion irradiation. The Hirr(T), which has a characteristic ssL shape in highly anisotropic Tl and Bi based cuprates, becomes more like that of YBa2Cu3O7 in the presence of these defects. The Jc at 77 K also shows a large increase as a result of flux localization at the …

Physics
We demonstrate simultaneous high energy resolution (rms≊800 eV) measurements of ionization and phonons created by particle interactions in a semiconductor crystal of macroscopic size (60 g germanium) at 25 mK. We present first studies of charge collection at biases below 1 V/cm, and find that, contrary to commonly held opinion, the full recoil energy of particle interactions is recovered as phonons when charge trapping is negligible. We also report an unanticipated correlation between charge collection and phonon energy at very low bias, and discuss this effect in terms of charge trapping.

Physics
We report on the first measurement of the absolute phonon energy and the amount of ionization produced by the recoil of nuclei and electrons in a 60 g germanium cyrstal at a temperature of ≊25 mK. We find good agreement between our results and previous measurements of ionization yield from nuclear recoils in germanium. Our device achieves 10:1 discrimination between neutrons and photons in the few keV energy range, demonstrating the feasibility of this technique for large reductions of background in searches for direct interactions of weakly interacting massive particle dark matter.

The Weakest Bond: Experimental Observation Of Helium Dimer, Fei Luo, George C. Mcbane, Geunsik Kim, Clayton F. Giese, W. Ronald Gentry
Peer Reviewed Articles
Helium dimer ion was observed after electron impact ionization of a supersonic expansion of helium with translational temperature near 1 mK. The dependence of the ion signal on source pressure, distance from the source, and electron kinetic energy was measured. The signal was determined to arise from ionization of neutral helium dimer.
The Morphology Of Lava Flows In Planetary Environments: Predictions From Analog Experiments, Ross W. Griffiths, Jonathan H. Fink
The Morphology Of Lava Flows In Planetary Environments: Predictions From Analog Experiments, Ross W. Griffiths, Jonathan H. Fink
Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The rates of surface cooling and lateral spreading are evaluated for lava flows on the surface of Earth, Venus, Mars, the Moon, and 10. Differences between the flow morphologies expected in these environments are then predicted under the assumption that the results of recent laboratory simulations oflavas using wax extruded beneath cold water (Fink and Griffiths, 1990) can be carried over. These experiments involved the spreading of viscous liquid under gravity in the presence of a solidifying surface crust and revealed a set of four distinct surface morphologies. Transitions from one morphology to the next occurred in a well-defined sequence …

Solidification And Morphology Of Submarine Lavas: A Dependence On Extrusion Rate, Ross W. Griffiths, Jonathan H. Fink
Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The results of recent laboratory experiments with wax extruded beneath relatively cold water may be extrapolated to predict the surface morphology of submarine lavas as a function of the extrusion rate and melt vIscosity. The experiments with solidifying wax indicated that the surface morphology was controlled by a single parameter, the ratio of the time taken for the surface to solidify, and a time scale for lateral flow. For submarine basalts a solution of the cooling problem (which is dominated by conduction in the lava but convective heat transfer in the water) and estimates of lava viscosities place this parameter …

Translational Correlations In The Vortex Array At The Surface Of A Type-Ii Superconductor, M. Cristina Marchetti, David R. Nelson
Physics - All Scholarship
We discuss the statistical mechanics of magnetic flux lines in a finite-thickness slab of type-II superconductor. The long wavelength properties of a flux-line liquid in a slab geometry are described by a hydrodynamic free energy that incorporates the boundary conditions on the flux lines at the sample's surface as a surface contribution to the free energy. Bulk and surface weak disorder are modeled via Gaussian impurity potentials. This free energy is used to evaluate the two-dimensional structure factor of the flux-line tips at the sample surface. We find that surface interaction always dominates in determining the decay of translational correlations …

On Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 138, standard shipboard procedures were modified to allow for the real-time monitoring of several laboratory core-scanning systems that provide centimeter-scale measurements of saturated bulk density, magnetic susceptibility and digital color reflectance. These continuous, high-resolution data sets were used to ensure the proper offset of multiple holes and to splice together complete sedimentary sections. Typically, the spliced, continuous sediment sections were found to be about 10% longer than the section drilled, as measured by the length of the drill string. While the source of this elongation is not yet fully understood, it must be compensated …

Life Histories In An Epifaunal Community: Coupling Of Adult And Larval Processes, Brian L. Bingham
Environmental Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Marine invertebrates growing epifaunally on red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) prop roots in the Indian River, Florida, USA, were studied in a small mangrove island (Jim Island) through which a number of channels had been cut. Roots hanging down into the water supported diverse epifaunal communities including sponges, oysters, barnacles, bryozoans, and ascidians. To determine what factors control species' population dynamics and contribute to the high degree of spatial heterogeneity characteristic of communities in this unique habitat, two hypotheses were tested: (1) Distributions of species on the roots are controlled by differential growth and mortality due to physical features; and (2) …

In standard Mott electron polarimetry using thin gold film targets, extrapolation procedures must be used to reduce the experimentally measured asymmetries A to the values they would have for scattering from single atoms. These extrapolations involve the dependence of A on either the gold film thickness t or the maximum detected electron energy loss in the target ΔE. Using a concentric cylindrical-electrode Mott polarimeter, we have studied and compared these two types of extrapolations over the electron energy range 20-100 keV. The potential systematic errors which can result from such procedures are analyzed in detail, particularly with regard to the …
What They Didn’T Tell Me About Calculus And The Computer, Melvin Henriksen
What They Didn’T Tell Me About Calculus And The Computer, Melvin Henriksen
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
My first attempt at using computers as an aid to teaching calculus began in 1966 and culminated with the publication in 1971 of Single Variahle Calculus, written jointly with Milton Lees. Everyone used a mainframe and punched cards and few knew how to program. Computer use was limited to supplementary exercises that could be done today with a hand-held programmable calculator. A constructive sequential approach to limits and elementary numerical analysis were emphasized. The absence of programming displeased computer scientists, but it was too avant garde for all but a tiny minority of teachers of calculus. Attempts by others …

Channel, A Model Of Channel Erosion By Shear, Scour And Channel Headwall Propagation: Part 1. Model Development, Alex W. Fogle, Billy J. Barfield
KWRRI Research Reports
In the research conducted under this project, models were developed which predict channel erosion resulting from shear in gradually varied flow, shearing forces resulting from submerged jets and hydraulic jumps, and shearing forces resulting from free jets impinging a plunge pool. These models are linked with a runoff routing algorithm to develop the CHANNEL model. This model predicts general channel erosion resulting from time varying gradually varied now as well as predicts the development and propagation of channel headwalls. At this writing, the model still has some problems handling the transition from open channel now to a free jet within …

The purpose of this project was to conduct a systematic inventory of rare plant species on the Pine Ridge District of the Nebraska National Forest. The objective of the inventory was to locate rare plant occurrences and compile information on their location, status and any possible threats. Four areas within the Pine Ridge District were identified as priority areas for the inventory fieldwork. The four tracts included the Soldier Creek Wilderness Area, a tract encompassing the East and West Ash Creek drainages, a middle unit tract, and a tract which straddles U.S. Highway 385 and encompasses a number of timber …
