Species Richness Gradients Of Oak Forest Plants Along The Missouri River In Nebraska And Iowa, Steven B. Rolfsmeier Dec 1989

Species Richness Gradients Of Oak Forest Plants Along The Missouri River In Nebraska And Iowa, Steven B. Rolfsmeier

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

The upland deciduous forests of the Missouri River valley contain many plants typical of forests to the east of this area, which are assumed to have migrated northward and westward along the river in postglacial times. Previous workers have reported a gradient of decreasing species richness upstream among woody species, which is suggested to be the result of climatic gradients and differential dispersal capabilities of the immigrant species. Floristic work on all vascular species in eight woodland sites along the Nebraska-Iowa border quantifies the presence of similar gradients for herbaceous species, but of differing degrees. These studies also reveal the …

Forage Shrubs And Grasses For Revegetating Saltland, H V. Runciman, C V. Malcolm Aug 1989

Forage Shrubs And Grasses For Revegetating Saltland, H V. Runciman, C V. Malcolm

Bulletins 4000 -

Salt tolerant shrubs and grasses are used for forage production from salt-affected farmland. This Bulletin is designed to assist in recognition of the important species in Western Australia and to provide information on their use. The species listed have more forage value than some natural indicators and colonizers of saltland, such as Mediterranean barley grass (Hordeum geniculatum), ice plant (Mesembryanthemum spp.), mallee lovegrass (Eragrostisdielsii), salt spurry (Spergularia spp.), curly ryegrass (Parapholis incurva) and beard grass (Polypogon monspeliensis). Some of the plants are also useful for rehabilitating degraded rangeland and mine …

Geotechnical Evaluation Of Sand Resources On The Inner Shelf Of Southern Virginia : Final Report To The City Of Virginia Beach, Suzette M. Kimball, James K. Dame Aug 1989

Geotechnical Evaluation Of Sand Resources On The Inner Shelf Of Southern Virginia : Final Report To The City Of Virginia Beach, Suzette M. Kimball, James K. Dame

Reports

The Coastal Erosion Abatement Commission, in its report to the General Assembly (1979), recommended that "there is a need to locate sources of sand supplies for rebuilding public beaches." The Sand Resources Inventory, completed in 1982 by the College of William and Mary, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, was initiated in response to this directive. The Sand Resources Inventory, however, focused on the Chesapeake Bay. The City of Virginia Beach, facing a chronic need to renourish beaches facing the Atlantic Ocean, elected to develop an inventory of beach-quality sand reserves existing on the inner shelf of the Atlantic coast. This …

Testing Macroevolutionary Hypotheses With Cladistic Analysis: Evidence Against Rectangular Evolution, Cliff A. Lemen, Patricia W. Freeman Jul 1989

Testing Macroevolutionary Hypotheses With Cladistic Analysis: Evidence Against Rectangular Evolution, Cliff A. Lemen, Patricia W. Freeman

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The properties of cladistic data sets from small monophyletic groups (6-1 2 species) are investigated using computer simulations of macroevolution. Two evolutionary models are simulated: gradualism and the punctuated-equilibrium hypothesis. Under the conditions of our simulations these two models of evolution make consistently different predictions about the distribution of autapomorphies among species. When strict stasis is enforced, the punctuated-equilibrium hypothesis predicts that the most expected number of autapomorphies per species will be zero, no matter how many characters are used in the analysis. As the number of characters used in the analysis increases, the distribution of the number of autapomorphies …

Wetlands Mitigation Evaluation Vegetation Studies : Final Report To The City Of Norfolk, Walter I. Priest Iii Jul 1989

Wetlands Mitigation Evaluation Vegetation Studies : Final Report To The City Of Norfolk, Walter I. Priest Iii

Reports

Coastal wetlands in Virginia represent a finite resource which is being
subjected to ever increasing development pressures. As a means of reducing
these losses while accomodating necessary economic development, the policy
of wetlands mitigation through compensation is increasingly being utilized
by both regulatory agencies and developers. This practice generally
involves the grading of an upland area to the appropriate elevation and
planting it with wetlands vegetation to replace a mar sh being lost in
another area.

The technology to plant and grow marsh vegetation for this and other
purposes has been well demonstrated . In as few as two growing …

A Mark-Recapture Study Of Striped Bass In The James River, Virginia : Annual Report 1988, Joseph G. Loesch, Bruce W. Hill Jun 1989

A Mark-Recapture Study Of Striped Bass In The James River, Virginia : Annual Report 1988, Joseph G. Loesch, Bruce W. Hill

Reports

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1. In the Spring 1988, 2,145 striped bass were tagged in the James River.

2. The mean size of striped bass tagged in 1988 (351.6 mm) was 117.9 mm smaller than mean size in 1987. The difference may be due to different locations and times of tagging.

3. The dominant age group in 1987 was the 1982 year class but in 1988 the dominant age group was the 1984 year class. This difference may also be accounted for by different locations and times of tagging.

4. The exodus of the mature fish out of the river after spawning …
