Application Of Microwave Technology To Effect On-Site Regeneration Of Gac, K.C. Mahesh Dec 1989

Application Of Microwave Technology To Effect On-Site Regeneration Of Gac, K.C. Mahesh

Theses

The off-site regeneration of granulated activated charcoal(GAC), spent as a result of stripping of organics from aqueous waste streams, represents a burdensome cost both because of the actual cost of regeneration and legal liability associated with shipping a hazardous waste off-site: that liability is reflected in huge potential costs associated with mishaps enroute for the self-insured or high premiums paid to the casualty insurance companies for those generators that are insured by third parties. Thus there is a need for the development of a process to effect on-site regeneration of spent GAC cost-effectively.

This thesis mainly focuses on the technical …

Aqueous Absorption Of Nox Induced By Sodium Chlorite Oxidation, Chen-Lu Yang Dec 1989

Aqueous Absorption Of Nox Induced By Sodium Chlorite Oxidation, Chen-Lu Yang

Theses

Aqueous scrubbing in alkaline media for the removal of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from flue gases using NaClO2 as an oxidant is being investigated in the Chemical Engineering Department of New Jersey Institute of Technology. This thesis presents the findings of an experimental program that was conducted to estimate the capability of NaClO2 aqueous solution to oxidize insoluble NO to soluble NO2 in order to increase its solubility and thus prevent NOx emission from entering the atmosphere from flue gases emitted by municipal incinerators or power plants.

The key findings of this program are:

Dielectric Response Spectrum Of A Damped One-Dimensional Double-Well Oscillator, J. W. Flocken, R. A. Guenther, John R. Hardy, L. L. Boyer Dec 1989

Dielectric Response Spectrum Of A Damped One-Dimensional Double-Well Oscillator, J. W. Flocken, R. A. Guenther, John R. Hardy, L. L. Boyer

John R. Hardy Papers

The characteristic features of the dielectric response spectrum associated with the condensation of a "soft" phonon mode during a ferroelectric phase transition can be reproduced by an oscillator moving in a damped linear double-well potential. The behavior of the response function below the transition temperature Tc can be simulated by introducing a linear mean-field coupling which destroys the symmetry of the well. Potentials derived from physically realistic parameters are shown to result in dielectric responses which are in order-of-magnitude agreement with experimental values.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The shape of the energy distribution of scattered particles in an active beam scattering experiment can be influenced considerably by the presence of highly charged impurity ions in the plasma. In this work it is shown theoretically that multiply charged impurities have only a small effect on the scattering distribution at low energies (/amu) and at high energies (>75 keV/amu). The effect of the impurities is the most pronounced for energies close to 50 keV/amu. The results of the calculations are in good agreement with experimental results at various energies. Extrapolation to higher beam energies leads to the conclusion …

Development Of An Expert System To Convert Knowledge-Based Geological Engineering Systems Into Fortran, Jill J. Cress, Ralph W. Wilkerson Dec 1989

Development Of An Expert System To Convert Knowledge-Based Geological Engineering Systems Into Fortran, Jill J. Cress, Ralph W. Wilkerson

Computer Science Technical Reports

A knowledge-based geographic information system (KBGIS) for geological engineering map (GEM) production was developed in GoldWorks, an expert system development shell. GoldWorks allows the geological engineer to develop a rule base for a GEM application. Implementation of the resultant rule base produced a valid GEM, but took too much time. This proved that knowledge-based GEM production was possible but in GoldWorks implementation failed as a practical production system. To solve this problem, a Conversion Expert System was developed which accepted, as input, a KBGIS and produced, as output, the equivalent Fortran code. This allowed the engineer to utilize GoldWorks for …

The Directed Steiner Problem On Graphs: A Simulated Annealing Approach, Lawrence Joseph Osborne, Billy E. Gillett Dec 1989

The Directed Steiner Problem On Graphs: A Simulated Annealing Approach, Lawrence Joseph Osborne, Billy E. Gillett

Computer Science Technical Reports

The well-known Steiner Problem on Graphs is an NP-complete problem for which there are many heuristic and exact algorithms that are deterministic. In this dissertation a new approach to the directed version of this problem is made by applying the ideas of statistical mechanics through the use of the method of simulated annealing. A version of annealing is developed for the Directed Steiner Problem and compared with one of the best general annealing schemes. Then a comparison is made between simulated annealing and the traditional branch and bound technique. The dual ascent algorithm of Richard T. Wong is used to …

Attribute Relationships: An Impediment In Automating Schema Integration, Amit P. Sheth, Sunit K. Gala Dec 1989

Attribute Relationships: An Impediment In Automating Schema Integration, Amit P. Sheth, Sunit K. Gala

Kno.e.sis Publications

Success in schema integration depends on understanding the semantics of schema components (e.g., entity sets, relationship sets, attributes), and the ability to capture and reason about these semantics. An important objective of our work on schema integration is to automate the reasoning as much as possible, and when not possible, depend on the human input and guidance. A key results of comparing the semantics associated with schema objects is that of determining attribute relationship. Once attribute relationships are determined, the task of object class(e.g., entity sets and relationship sets) integration becomes simpler and can e automated to a great extent. …

Calculation Of Electron Scattering For 4He In A Continuum Shell Model, Ming Yu Dec 1989

Calculation Of Electron Scattering For 4He In A Continuum Shell Model, Ming Yu

Masters Theses

Calculations for the electroexcitation of the 4He, O+ state have been performed within the context of recoil corrected continuum shell model. Approximations previously employed for inelastic scattering with the recoil corrected continuum shell model are eliminated in the work. The O+ state exhausts only 10% of the energy weighted sum rule and previous shell model calculations for the excitation of this state produce about ten times too much strength. This difficulty is alleviated by the use translationally invariant wave functions and the application of continuum boundary conditions for this particle unbound state. The structure of the O+ state is …

Substituent Effects On The Gas-Phase Acidity Of Silane, Mark S. Gordon, David E. Volk, David R. Gano Dec 1989

Substituent Effects On The Gas-Phase Acidity Of Silane, Mark S. Gordon, David E. Volk, David R. Gano

Mark S. Gordon

In a previous paper, the gas-phase acidities of XHn compounds (X= C, N, 0, F, Si, P, S, Cl) were predicted with ab initio wave functions. At the MP4 level of theory with extended basis sets (6-311++G(3df,2pd)3 for second-period atoms and 6-3l++G- (3df,2pd) for third-period atoms], the calculated gas-phase acidities for these species were determined to be within 2 kcaljmol of experimental values. Similar results for the second period were obtained by DeFrees and McLean.

Introduction And Enhancement Of Vegetative Cover At Lake Mead, Jennifer S. Haley, Lisa K. Croft, Suzanne E. Leavitt, Larry J. Paulson

Publications (WR)

Studies done by the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) and the Arizona Fish and Game between 1978 and 1981 indicate that inadequate cover may be limiting the production and survival of largemouth bass at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LMNRA). As a result of these studies, NDOW initiated a contract in 1986 with the Lake Mead Research Center (LMRC) to investigate means of improving habitat for game fish by introducing natural and/or artificial cover.

During Phase I (1986-1987) of this contract, the shoreline of Lake Mead was surveyed for aquatic and terrestrial plant growth. Also during this time, submerged …
