The Distribution Of The Fauna In The Interstitial Habitats Of Riverine Sediments Of The Danube And The Piesting (Austria), Dan L. Danielopol Jan 1976

The Distribution Of The Fauna In The Interstitial Habitats Of Riverine Sediments Of The Danube And The Piesting (Austria), Dan L. Danielopol

International Journal of Speleology

The interstitial fauna living in the riverine sediments of the Danube and Piesting have been investigated in Lower Austria. The nematodes, oligochaetes and cyclopoids are the most abundant groups (they represent up to 80% of the total fauna). The harpacticoids, the insect larvae, the isopods, the amphipods, the cladocera and the limnohalacarids are poorly represented (generally under 20% of the total fauna). The absence of hydrachnellids is striking. The vertical distribution of the interstitial fauna shows for several groups i.e. limnohalacarids, ostracods, isopods, harpacticoids, that the epigean species are quantitatively better represented in the upper sediment layers instead of the …

La Dynamique De Population De L'Isopode Proasellus Slavus Ssp.N. Et Les Larves De Chironomides Dans L'Hyporhéique De La Drave Du Point De Vue De La Pollution, Milan Meštrov, Romana Lattinger-Penko, Vlatka Tavčar

International Journal of Speleology

If we sum up the data and observations derived from our researches on the Drava river, we conclude after consideration of surface water fauna and after comparison of chemical parameters that it influences the hyporheic water of a rough gravel-sandy alluvium more than 2 m deep, while in the compact sandy substratum it has less influence. The next conclusion is that the horizontal and vertical distribution of Proasellus slavus ssp.n. in the alluvium of the Drava river, depends upon the granulation of substratum, with reference so the largeness of interstices; that the populations vary in density and structure according to …

New Data On The Foraminifera Of The Groundwaters Of Middle Asia, V. I. Mikhalevich Jan 1976

New Data On The Foraminifera Of The Groundwaters Of Middle Asia, V. I. Mikhalevich

International Journal of Speleology

New data obtained during the expedition to Middle Asia (1973) essentially enlarge our knowledge of foraminifera living in underground waters. Seven new species were discovered in the wells of the Kara-Kum and Ust-Urt deserts. All of them contain cytoplasma. The wells are situated in the region of bedding of underground waters of the heightened salinity in the zone of balance of runoff and evaporation. The majority of the species described in our work like many of the species recorded from the underground waters earlier (Brodsky, 1928; Nikoljuk, 1968; Jankovskaja and Mikhalevich, 1972) belong to the genera living in coastal brackish …

The Karst Of Transvaal (South Africa), J. Martini, I. Kavalieris Jan 1976

The Karst Of Transvaal (South Africa), J. Martini, I. Kavalieris

International Journal of Speleology

The Transvaal Karst is a world important example of a Karst developed on a very old dolomite. Its unique character is due to the composition of the rock and history of development. The dissolution of the dolomite is interesting and has an important effect on the character of the caves developed. The caves preserved in this area include the longest known in South Africa and are perhaps among the largest dolomite systems known in the world. They are very old and in some cases contain important palaeontological deposits (Australopithecine fauna). The caves to various degrees are in a state of …

Species of the genera Microcharon (Isopoda Microparasellidae), Kovalevskiella (Ostracoda Metacyprinae) and of the family Parabathynellidae (Bathynellacea) are recorded for the first time in Austria.

Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1975 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall Jan 1976

Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1975 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts weekly surveys from June through early October to obtain oyster spatfall information. Spat counts are made from oyster shells strung on wire and · suspended from stakes on public and private beds. The number of spat on shells are counted each week of the spawning season to determine the potential of a particular area for receiving a strike and to predict the most likely period the strikes will occur. Shells .planted just before the period of maximum set have the best chance of getting a good strike.

The Glacial Geology Of Mckenzie County, North Dakota, Clark Clark Fulton

Theses and Dissertations

Fourteen lithostratigraphic units composed of windblown, glacial, lake, slopewash, and stream sediment were distinguished in McKenzie County, The units were mapped using aerial photographs, topographic maps, and soil maps combi11ed with field e:xaminations of sediment outcrops. Eight of the units have been formally named and described in earlier studies. Four of them, however, have not been a"~ previously named and formally described .a.nu assigned names in this study. Two other units are described, but because of their limited exposure, are not assigned a formal lithostratlgraphic name. The oldest sediment exposed in the county was deposited during the Paleocene and the …

H I In Early-Type Galaxies. Ii. Mass Loss And Galactic Winds, S. M. Faber, J. S. Gallagher

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Implications of observed upper limits to the neutral hydrogen content of E and SO galaxies from Paper I are discussed. If gas shed by dying stars is completely retained by these galaxies and exists as H I, these upper limits will be exceeded in only 109 yr for E's and SO's and in only 2 x 108 yr for NGC 4472. Evidently, gas either is hidden in some undetectable form or is removed from the interstellar medium completely.

Sealing Farm Dams, I A F Laing, R. G. Pepper

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Research over the past 10 years has shown that it is technically possible to seal many leaking farm dams. In some situations a cheap chemical treatment is effective but in most cases it is cheaper to construct a replacement dam.

This article reviews the situation in western Australia and outlines some of the methods used for sealing dams.

Comparison Of Economic Returns From Grain Crops, H M. Fisher Jan 1976

Comparison Of Economic Returns From Grain Crops, H M. Fisher

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

While wheat is still generally the most profitable crop in Western Australia the relative profitability of barley and linseed has risen in the last few years; in southern areas they are likely to be at least as profitable as wheat.

Oats has fallen in profitability relative to wheat, and grain legumes have suffered a marked fall. Yields of these grains have increased with the introduction of new varieties but their price increases have not kept pace with those of wheat and barley. The present relationship of yields and costs indicates that substantial price changes will be needed to change the …
