Leaf Epidermal Transmittance Of Ultraviolet Radiation And Its Implication For Plant Sensitivity To Ultraviolet-Radiation Injury, Ronald Robberecht Dec 1976

Leaf Epidermal Transmittance Of Ultraviolet Radiation And Its Implication For Plant Sensitivity To Ultraviolet-Radiation Injury, Ronald Robberecht

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Leaf epidermal transmittance of ultraviolet radiation (280-400 nm) was examined in several plant species to determine the capability of the epidermis to attenuate solar ultraviolet radiation. Epidermal samples were mechanically isolated and examined with a spectroradiometer/integrating sphere for transmittance. A survey of 25 species exposed to natural insolation was conducted. Although the species differed in life form, habitat type, and epidermal characteristics, epidermal transmittance was generally less than 10%. Ultraviolet radiation was attenuated 95 to 99% in more than half of the species. In 16 species, flavonoid and related pigments in the epidermis accounted for 20 to 57% of ...

Esr Study Of Free Radicals In Irradiated Single Crystals Of Potassium Hydroxylamine Disulfonate, B. J. Wilson, Robert W. Holmberg Aug 1976

Esr Study Of Free Radicals In Irradiated Single Crystals Of Potassium Hydroxylamine Disulfonate, B. J. Wilson, Robert W. Holmberg

Faculty Publications

Two free radicals formed when single crystals of potassium hydroxylamine disulfonate are irradiated with gamma rays at 77degrees K were studied by ESR. The ESR spectra result from a predominant center (radical A) exhibiting large 14N and 1H hyperfine splittings and from lesser amounts of Fremy's radical [O-dotN(SO3)2-2]. The g and hyperfine tensors of these radicals have been evaluated and are discussed. Radical A, whose identity remains in doubt, may be regarded as the precursor to Fremy's radical; on warming its lines decay and those of Fremy's radical are formed. Lines from radical A decrease ...

A National Model Of Sediment And Water Quality: Various Impacts On American Agriculture, Center For Agricultural And Rural Development, Iowa State University, James C. Wade, Earl O. Heady

CARD Reports

This report summarizes a portion of the research done under Grant GI-32990 from the RANN Program of the National Science Foundation. The research is a continuation of the development and application of models of agricultural production, resource use, and the environment. Previous research concentrated on the use of resources in agriculture and the development of models to determine the levels of potential environmental harm. This extension links the resource utilization and residue-creating production activities of cropland agriculture to the quality of water in the nation's streams. The polluting substance studied is sediment.

Distribution Of Stream Pollution In Lake Water, Richard W. Tew, Samuel S. Egdorf, James E. Deacon May 1976

Distribution Of Stream Pollution In Lake Water, Richard W. Tew, Samuel S. Egdorf, James E. Deacon

Publications (WR)

Wastewater effluent-laden waters from Las Vegas Wash (LVW) form a density current that may be detected in Boulder Basin of Lake Mead at considerable distances from the wash estuary. This led to the suspicion that water from the inflowing stream [40 mgd (1.5 X 105 cu m/day)] might not be rapidly diluted in the enormous volume of the lake [19 mil acre-ft (2.3 X 1010 cu m)], but might persist as a recognizable entity to the vicinity of the intake of a major water source for populous Clark County, Nev.

Because of the detection sensitivity ...

Forage Selection And Nutrition Of Sheep And Goats Grazing In The Tunisian Pre-Sahara, Rudolfo Ricardo Griego May 1976

Forage Selection And Nutrition Of Sheep And Goats Grazing In The Tunisian Pre-Sahara, Rudolfo Ricardo Griego

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nomadic pastoralism has been the traditional method of utilizing grazing resources in arid and semi-arid regions of Africa. However, increased sedentarization accompanied by growing human and animal populations during the past two decades is thought to be accelerating the desertification process, or desert expansion. The specific interactions of the grazing animal with this process has been speculated upon but not studied in detail. A comparative study was initiated during the spring grazing season of 1974 to determine sheep and goat nutritional and production responses, as well as patterns of vegetative selection and utilization under the pastoral system currently employed in ...

The Nature And Distribution Of Enteric Bacteria In Las Vegas Bay, Samuel S. Egdorf Apr 1976

The Nature And Distribution Of Enteric Bacteria In Las Vegas Bay, Samuel S. Egdorf

Publications (WR)

The distribution of water and of enteric bacteria of possible fecal origin into Las Vegas Bay from Las Vegas Wash was determined. Determination of distribution patterns was attained by applying the concept of the population component ratio of enteric bacteria. The development and application of new techniques and methods implicit in the application of the "component ratio" concept are discussed. The unreliability of thoroughly referenced techniques and methods generally accepted as standard are treated in detail. Physical factors affecting the distribution and deposition of enteric bacteria (including those of special public health importance) in Las Vegas Bay are also discussed.

Van Der Waals Interactions Of Ii-State Linear Molecules With Atoms. C6 For No(X 2Π) Interactions, Glen C. Nielson, Gregory A. Parker, Russell T. Pack Mar 1976

Van Der Waals Interactions Of Ii-State Linear Molecules With Atoms. C6 For No(X 2Π) Interactions, Glen C. Nielson, Gregory A. Parker, Russell T. Pack

Faculty Publications

Formulas are derived for the van der Waals Cn coefficients for the interaction of a diatomic molecule in a II electronic state with an S-state atom. Two triatomic states arise from the degenerate IIstate. The average of the two energies has the usual Legendre polynomial (PL) angular dependence, but the difference in energies of the two states is shown to have associated Legendre polynomial (PML with M=2) angular dependence. Procedures for including spin orbit coupling are included, and the extension to interactions of Delta- and Phi-state molecules is discussed. Values of the spherical part of the C6 coefficients for ...
