Investigation Into Karst Of Southwest Missouri Using Electrical Resistivity, Donald Zachary Wormington

MSU Graduate Theses

Nixa, Missouri is located on the southwestern edge of the Ozark Dome which has a karst geomorphological environment. Near surface geophysical methods can be used in determining the location and nature of karst features such as caves and sinkholes. Electrical resistivity methods have been shown to be among the most useful methods in deciphering sinkholes and caves. To investigate a known cave and related sinkholes and faults within Mississippian carbonates south of Nixa, Missouri, a series of two-dimensional electrical resistivity profiles were collected using the dipole-dipole and Schlumberger arrays. Terrain data was collected to include in modeling. The data were …

Investigation Of The Energy Source For An Early Dynamo In Vesta From Experiments On Electrical Resistivity Of Liquid Fe-10wt%Ni At High Pressures, Eric M. Lenhart

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Investigation of energy sources in an early dynamo in Vesta has been carried out using high pressure-temperature experimental studies. Electrical resistivity of Fe‐10wt%Ni was measured at 2-5 GPa up to 2082 K in the liquid state and compared to previous results of pure Fe and pure Ni. Thermal conductivity was calculated from electrical resistivity to determine adiabatic core heat flux. The results are applied to determine whether thermal convection could be responsible for the putative dynamo in early Vesta’s core. An adiabatic core heat flux of ~300 MW at the top of Vesta’s core is estimated from this study and …

AlB2 is also similarly shown the presence of …

Geophysical Techniques Used For The Analysis And Prediction Of Soil Strength And Mechanical Behavior, Matthew A. Hurley Jan 2021

Geophysical Techniques Used For The Analysis And Prediction Of Soil Strength And Mechanical Behavior, Matthew A. Hurley

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

Determining soil properties involves extensive laboratory testing of samples at discrete timing and location. Non-destructive analysis methods, such as electrical and seismic, presents alternatives to means of gathering soil properties accompanied with increased flexibility due to spatial and temporal applications. This research examined the ability of seismic wave data to predict soil behavior such as stress-strain and pore pressures using a modified version of Duncan and Chang (1970). Friction angle predictions were also analyzed using shear wave velocity and a modified form of the Santos and Gomez-Correria (2001) equation. This research also analyzed the use of electrical data to predict …

Investigation Into Reduced Thermal Conductivity For Half-Heusler Alloys And Identification Of Novel Multinary Chalcogenides Possessing Intrinsically Low Thermal Conductivity, Dean Hobbis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The current climate makes the need for sustainable energy production a priority, leading to keen interest towards the advancement of “green” energy sources and technology. This necessity has led to a multidisciplinary scientific approach with collaborations across various fields that are looking to solve this extremely important problem. One such technology is thermoelectric devices, which are attractive due to the fact that they provide direct solid-state conversion of heat to electrical power, and vice versa. This in turn allows for both waste heat recovery and sustainable refrigeration. One key aspect that is preventing the wide scale commercial use of thermoelectric …

Electrical Conductivity And Resistivity Study Of Heterogeneous Sediment In Inwood Hill Park, Manhattan, Ny, Rea A. Khaleda

Dissertations and Theses

The area near the inlet of Spuyten Duyvil Creek in Inwood Hill Park in New York City exhibits complex hydrological processes. The inlet is a tidal flat, which contains brackish water; a mixture of saltwater and freshwater. The area was modified by man, built on a shell bed and contains heterogeneous sediment. One field adjacent to the inlet contains several small sinkholes. Electrical resistivity and ground conductivity techniques were used in order to get an understanding of the hydrological processes of this field. It was hypothesized that the formation of the sinkholes is due to the tidal forcing of the …

Geophysical Assessment Of Subsurface Soil Conditions Using Capacitively Coupled Resistivity, Folaseye Coker Aug 2018

Geophysical Assessment Of Subsurface Soil Conditions Using Capacitively Coupled Resistivity, Folaseye Coker

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to explore the applicability of Capacitively-Coupled Resistivity (CCR) as an improvement on traditional drilling and sampling methods for subsurface soil investigations. The CCR method could be used to identify critical locations for drilling and sampling such as expansive clay layers and anomalies (sinkholes, unknown landfills, etc.) rather than uniformly sampling across a site. CCR surveys were performed at Alpena, Arkansas along a highway expansion project changing US 62 from a two lane to four lane highway, and at Alton, Illinois along the Mel Price Levee, a 5.2 mile levee along a portion of the …

Magnetotelluric Analysis Of Central Kenya Kenyan Rift Volcanoes For Geothermal Development, Anna Wairimu Mwangi

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Abstract

High temperature geothermal resources are vast along rift margins because of emplacement of magma in shallow crust. This is the case along the Kenyan Rift valley also known as the Gregory Rift. It is the Eastern arm of the East African rift and a chain of volcanoes along the rift graben characterizes it. We use (MT) magnetotelluric method to image beneath the peralkaline province of the Kenya Rift i.e. Olkaria, Eburru, Badlands, and Longonot volcanoes. The resistivity structure shows active geothermal activity happening at the upper 3km from the subsurface as evidenced by low resistivity cap rock comprised of …

Effects Of Gradation And Moisture Content On Resistivity Of Mechanically Stabilized Earth Wall Backfill Materials, Jose Luis Arciniega Jan 2018

Effects Of Gradation And Moisture Content On Resistivity Of Mechanically Stabilized Earth Wall Backfill Materials, Jose Luis Arciniega

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The service life of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls depends on the corrosion rate of the metallic reinforcement used in their construction. The resistivity of the backfill aggregates needs to be measured accurately in order to estimate realistically the corrosion rate of the reinforcement. Resistivity testing is usually performed using the traditional soil box on the portion of the aggregates that passes a No. 10 or No. 8 sieve to either select or reject the backfill. For a more reasonable characterization of the corrosivity of coarse backfills, it is desirable to use their actual gradations. To that end, several resistivity …

Geophysical Assessment Of Kinion Lake Dam, Tim Allen Moody Aug 2017

Geophysical Assessment Of Kinion Lake Dam, Tim Allen Moody

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Geophysical methods including Capacitively-Coupled Resistivity (CCR), Electrical Resistivity Tomography/Imaging (ERT/ERI), Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) with Love and Rayleigh waves and a Full-Waveform Inversion (FWI) were performed on Kinion Lake Dam, an earth-filled embankment dam that has historically experienced significant seepage and internal erosion issues. Surveys were completed along the crest and downstream toe of the dam. Results from the surveys indicate that each method is capable of resolving the bedrock depth within 1-2 m of locations shown on previous drilling logs, though some discrepancies between the methods exist. A weathered bedrock layer is believed to have led to …

Thin Film Thermal Deposition At Various Pressures, James Kela Yee Keen Grace May 2017

Thin Film Thermal Deposition At Various Pressures, James Kela Yee Keen Grace

Senior Theses

This research was to verify the hypothesis that resistivity of metal's thin film deposited in a low-pressure environment is the same as its solid material. Thermal Evaporation is a thin film deposition technique in which metal inside a vacuum is evaporated, then deposited onto a surface. Higher quality metal films are deposited when the vacuum pressure is lower. At higher pressures, more air molecules are trapped within the layers of metal, thus increasing scattering sites and increasing the resistance. However, reaching a lower pressure requires more time and effort. In this research, films were deposited at various pressures and resistivities …

Study Of Resistivity And Shear Wave Velocity As A Predictive Tool Of Sediment Type In Levee Foundation Soils, Louisiana Gulf Coast Levee System, Derek Stephen Goff

LSU Master's Theses

Geotechnical sediment type of levee foundation soils may be estimated by using cross-plots of shear-wave velocity and electrical resistivity for Louisiana levees. Best-fit polynomial models for estimating soil type in Japanese levees have been created using cross-plots of shear-wave velocity and electrical resistivity. A similar study or model for flood protection structures in the Mississippi River delta plain or other major river delta does not exist. We make the soil-type estimation model more relevant to the foundation soils in the Louisiana Coastal Zone by identifying silt in addition to sand and clay, and eliminating gravel as a dominant soil type. …

Fluctuations In Resistivity In The Tuscaloosa Marine Shale, Southwest Mississippi And Southeast Louisiana, Thomas Hetherington Story Jan 2014

Fluctuations In Resistivity In The Tuscaloosa Marine Shale, Southwest Mississippi And Southeast Louisiana, Thomas Hetherington Story

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Tuscaloosa Marine Shale in southwest Mississippi and Southeast Louisiana's Florida Parishes has become an unconventional target for the exploration and production of oil. Spurred by early estimates of over 7 billion barrels of oil in place, the target region for this production is the basal portion of the shale where a continuous increase in resistivity greater than 5 Ohmm can be observed. This increase was originally attributed solely to the generation of hydrocarbons from the organic matter contained within the shale, with the presence of the oil and gas impeding the flow of electrons through what would normally be …

Investigating Fault Structure Using Electrical Resistivity Tomography, Sara Michelle Monahan

Physics

The resolving power of two-dimensional Direct Current (DC) Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) is investigated in the context of shallow faults. Subsurface electrical resistivity data was collected perpendicular to a secondary fault scarp of the Los Osos Fault Zone with a Syscal KID Switch 24 resistivity meter and processed with Prosys II and Res2DInv software to produce two-dimensional cross sections of resistivity values via a smoothness-constrained least-squares optimization method. Comparison of ERT inversion results to a trench wall map of the same fault scarp suggest the location and dip direction of faults is resolvable, while detailed fault structure, such as dip …

Complexity-Driven Properties Of The Intermetallic Compounds Gd₁₁₇Co₅₆Sn₁₁₂ And Ln₃₀Ru₄Sn₃₁ (Ln = Gd And Tb), Devin Charles Schmitt

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Understanding the relationships between the structure of materials and their properties in extended solid systems is a necessity when intuitively designing functional materials. One of the most fundamental properties of a material is its ability to transport heat, which is linked to the lattice complexity of the material. Here, the single crystalline materials Gd117Co56Sn112 and Tb30Ru4Sn31 are grown to study the pronounced effect of a complexity-driven reduction of lattice thermal conductivity. The transport and magnetic properties of Gd117Co56Sn112 and Ln30Ru4Sn31 (Ln = Gd and Tb) are also presented and related to other systems. Tb30Ru4Sn31 is found to be a large …

A Geophysical Investigation Searching For Archaeological Features At Sunwatch Indian Village, Danielle Torridi

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

A near-surface geophysical survey was conducted at SunWatch Indian Village in Dayton, Ohio. The main motivations for this investigation were to evaluate geophysical methods to locate, map, and identify features associated with the SunWatch Indian Village archaeological site and to expand the area surveyed. Previous studies (Houston, 2002; Miller, 2004) have determined that burials covered with limestone slabs are relatively easy to detect and map geophysically with GPR and electrical resistivity. This was reconfirmed in this study by collecting 3D GPR data over a 'control' location previously surveyed by Houston (2002) and Miller (2004). However, similar anomalies were not observed …

In this work, the effects of a post-deposition RF plasma treatment on indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films prepared with pulsed DC magnetron sputtering in argon were investigated. The parameters of the post-deposition were studied to determine what RF power and gas pressure resulted in the greatest reduction in resistivity in the films while producing the smallest increase in substrate temperature for treatments with both argon and oxygen plasmas. The as-deposited (untreated) films and the treated films were characterized using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction to determine the effects of the post-deposition treatment on the degree of film crystallization. XPS …

Atomic Force Microscope Conductivity Measurements Of Single Ferritin Molecules, Degao Xu Dec 2004

Atomic Force Microscope Conductivity Measurements Of Single Ferritin Molecules, Degao Xu

Theses and Dissertations

Conductive Atomic Force Microscope (c-AFM) was used to measure the conductivity of single horse spleen ferritin (HoSF) and azotobacter vinelandii bacterial ferritin (AvBF) molecules deposited on flat gold surfaces. A 500 micron diameter gold ball was also used as a contact probe to measure the conductivity of a thin film of ferritin molecules. The average current measured for holo HoSF was 13 and 5 times larger than that measured for apo HoSF as measured by c-AFM at 1V and gold ball at 2V and respectively, which indicates that the core of ferritin is more conductive than the protein shell and …

Measurement Of Charge Storage Decay Time And Resistivity Of Spacecraft Insulators, Prasanna V. Swaminathan Aug 2004

Measurement Of Charge Storage Decay Time And Resistivity Of Spacecraft Insulators, Prasanna V. Swaminathan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Insulators used in the construction of spacecraft are irradiated with high-energy electrons in the space environment and this sometimes causes the insulators to charge to very high voltages. Such charged insulators can generate spontaneous electric partial-discharge pulses of the order of mA to tens of A. These pulses sometimes last enough time to destroy the expensive micro-circuitry present in the spacecraft. In evaluating the threat to the spacecraft due to these discharges, calculation of the resistivity becomes a critical parameter since it determines how accumulated charge will distribute across the spacecraft and how rapidly charge imbalance will dissipate. So far, …

Understanding The Origins Of Metastability In Thin Film Growth; Tantalum And The Early Group Vb-Vib Metals, Neme Okechukwu Nnolim

Dissertations

Tantalum (Ta) is a metal that is highly prized for its applications in a variety of industries, including the microelectronics industry, where it is largely used in thin film modifications in order to achieve various electronic, magnetic and structural capabilities in solid-state devices. Ta frequently forms metastable phases, including the well-known ß-phase, during the preparation of thin Ta films by standard film deposition methods such as sputtering and electro-deposition. In order to gain insight into Ta metastable phase formation, the Bain transformation mechanism is studied for Ta and the neighboring body centered cubic (bcc) transition metals in Groups 5 and …
