Analytic Modeling Of Eccentric Binary Black Holes : From Inspiral To Merger, Dillon Paige Buskirk

The orbital evolution of black hole binaries is described by two main phases: the inspiral and the merger. Using the post-Newtonian (PN) theory for the inspiral phase of the binary, we build up a Mathematica script to obtain strain waveforms for the inspiral. We expand our previous inspiral formulation to include eccentric orbits, which greatly complicates the calculations. Since this model breaks down as the two bodies approach merger, a separate model for the merger and ring-down is required. This part of the evolution is highly non-linear and numerical relativity (NR) is required to simulate this problem. However, this is …

To obtain a better understanding of the mobility of actinide element contaminants in the environment, the association of the contaminants with specific host phases of soils and sediments must be investigated. This investigation is most commonly conducted using sequential extraction techniques that employ the selective dissolution of soil phases with increasingly aggressive chemical treatment. Though several sequential extraction studies exist in literature, conclusions cannot be made by direct comparison of data due to the lack of uniformity in the protocols used. Recent advances in the molecular bases of haemostasis have highlighted that endothelial thrombomodulin (TM) plays a critical role in local haemostasis by binding thrombin and subsequently converting protein C to its active form (APC). In addition, the binding of thrombin to TM drastically alters the thrombin's procoagulant activities to anticoagulant activities. The lipid bilayer in which it resides serves as an essential 'cofactor', locally concentrating and coordinating the appropriate alignment of reacting cofactors and substrates for protein C activation. In this work, we explore novel analytical applications of Ionic Liquids and Near-infrared multispectral imaging microscopy.
Ionic liquids (ILs) belong to a group of organic salts that are liquid at room temperature and can be, due to their unique chemical and physical properties, successfully used for a variety of applications. The main goal of this study was to explore the synergistic use of ILs in chemical separations. Specifically, chiral ILs were used as novel chiral selectors for Capillary Electrophoresis and as solvents for stationary phase in Gas Chromatography. This Master of Science thesis encompasses two projects in chemical pharmaceuticals. The first is a study of excipients and the added new information collected beyond Thermal Gravimetric Analysis and Differential Scanning Calorimetry from Dielectric Analysis. These new properties enhance our global knowledge of excipients by thermal analytical methods. Excipients, the inactive ingredients in formulated drugs, aid different functions of the active pharmacy ingredient, the drugs. Low temperature transitions, by DEA including melting of frozen solvents, e.g. water, are more definitive than observed by low temperature DSC. Recently,1 an algorithm has been derived for the explicit determination of an induced SL (n+2,R) Lie invariance transformation group for a completely integrable 2n - dimensional dynamical system defined on IR2n from that known for a free particle system with n degree of freedom. 2 In particular, the universal transitive Lie invariance transformation group for both the isotropic harmonic oscillator3 and the anharmonic oscillator4 (quartic potential) has been obtained by this algorithm. The series of compounds indicated by the formular C_6H_5-(CH=CH)n-C_6H_5 change in color from white (colorless) to yellow to orange to red to deep red as n increases from 1 to 12. Stilbene is the first compound of this series (n=1). Under pressure, exerted by a diamond anvil press, stilbene can be seen to change color from white to yellow to red as increasing pressure is applied. Similar color changes are observed for the compounds where n=2,3, and 4 when subjected to similar pressure. This study records and reports the spectra versus pressure for these compounds.

The present chemical and physical methods for the determination of ethyl alcohol are all subject to systematic errors derived from any of a number of interfacing substances usually present in solution with the ethanol. Some of the most popular methods are slow and tedious and require a good deal of skill and technique to perform. The dichromate (2), pycnometer and refractometer methods are three such methods. The interfering substances most often present in industrial and food products are fusel oils and acetaldehyde. These substances interfere in the three methods just mentioned.
