Braving The Elements: Loss Of Metals From Mardi Gras Beads Due To Handling And Weathering, Thomas O. Carmichael, Ruth H. Carmichael
Gulf and Caribbean Research
The largest Mardi Gras celebrations in the U.S. are found along the Gulf of Mexico coast. With increasing awareness of and concern for environmental and human health risks due to pollution from Mardi Gras celebrations, there is a need for studies to quantify potential harms. We conducted a 2—part study to determine whether use—related handling and weathering of common Mardi Gras beaded necklaces results in loss of potentially harmful metals to the environment at levels of ecological or human health concern. Our data indicate that weathering and use—related handling can cause metals to be shed from the metallic coating of …

Too Little, Too Late: Congress's Attempt To Regulate Forever Chemicals Through Military Appropriations, Michael Heard Snow
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, shortened to “PFAS,” are a broad class of approximately 4,000 to 6,000 industrial chemicals characterized by a carbon chain saturated with fluorine molecules. This structure, dominated by carbon-fluorine bonds, is one of the most stable known chemical structures—and it is this stability that lies at the core of both the usefulness and the greatest issues surrounding PFAS. They are generally non-reactive except at tailored “active sites” and they never break down naturally—leading to the nickname “forever chemicals.” The persistence of their structures creates a plethora of desirable characteristics: PFAS are grease-resistant, waterproof, fireproof, stain-proof, and chemically …

Triple Threat Gateway? Respiratory Health, Demographics And Land Use In Metro East St. Louis, Missouri-Illinois, Usa, Stacey R. Brown-Amilian
International Journal of Geospatial and Environmental Research
This paper examines a triple threat for residents of two counties in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Previous environmental justice research has focused on demographics and toxic facilities. This research builds upon those assessments by incorporating hospital discharge data and demographics as well as three different types of pollution sources. Air pollution monitors were unavailable to use during the time period of 2009-2011, therefore proxy measures of pollution in the form of major roadways, industrial land use parcels, and toxic facility information from the EPA Toxic Release Inventory are utilized. This study integrates both spatial coincidence and proximity analysis methods …

Bulletin of National University of Uzbekistan: Mathematics and Natural Sciences
Today, around the world as a result of the activities of industrial enterprises, mining, their use, as well as other anthropogenic factors, there is a chemical pollution of the soil cover, a change in soil properties and fertility. Pollution of soils of various types leads to the formation of problems such as soil degradation, a decrease in the qualitative and quantitative level of fertility, as well as other problems associated with the ecosystem. Today, the urgent task is to create remediation measures for soils contaminated to varying degrees with oil and oil products, corresponding to the climatic conditions of the …

Waste Size: The Skinny On The Environmental Costs Of The Fashion Industry, Elisha Teibel
Waste Size: The Skinny On The Environmental Costs Of The Fashion Industry, Elisha Teibel
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
The fashion industry is a web of complex global markets currently valued at $3 trillion that employs somewhere around sixty million people worldwide and is estimated to be one of the most labor-intensive industries on the planet. Over the past couple of decades, the industry has evolved into a highly fragmented sector with complicated supply chains and completely unstandardized production practices, which vary by factory and by country. The most significant facet of the fashion trade is the clothing and textile industry. The current total value of the clothing and textiles trade is estimated at $726 billion and a staggering …

A Simple And Efficient Approach For Preconcentration Of Some Heavy Metals In Cosmetic Products Before Their Determinations By Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, Nai̇l Altunay, Ramazan Gürkan
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In the current study, a simple and efficient analytical method for preconcentration and determination of Cd(II), Pb(II), and Sn(II) in some cosmetic samples, using ultrasonic assisted-cloud point extraction and flame atomic absorption spectrometry, was developed. The method is based on the ternary complex formations of Sn(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II), which are available in the form of neutral and/or anionic hydroxo complexes (Sn(OH)$_{3}^{-}$, Pb(OH)$_{3}^{-}$, Cd(OH)$_{2}$, and/or Cd(OH)$_{3}^{-})$, with Victoria Pure Blue BO (VPB$^{+})$ in the presence of cetylpyridinium chloride at pH 8.5, and then extraction of the formed ternary complexes into the micellar phase of polyoxyethylene sorbitan monostearate (Tween 60). Seeking Peace In The Niger Delta: Oil, Natural Gas, And Other Vital Resources, Darren Kew, David L. Phillips
New England Journal of Public Policy
Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta region has seen little benefit from the billions of dollars earned from oil over the last four decades, prompting a growing but disorganized insurgency across the region. Irresponsible oil companies and government officials have reduced the Niger Delta to one of the most polluted environments on earth. Corrupt local and national politicians, many of whom came to power through rigged elections, have colluded to manipulate ethnic divisions amid poverty to loot the region’s wealth. Consequently, the people of the Niger Delta have no formal political voice in Nigeria’s nascent democratic system, increasing the appeal of militias …

Student Perspective: Margaret Chase Smith Library 2011 Essay Contest:, Zoe Anderson, Ali Clift, Allaina Murphy
Maine Policy Review
Each year, the Margaret Chase Smith Library sponsors an essay contest for Maine high school seniors. The focus of the 2011 contest was environmental protection. The essay prompt quoted a 1972 statement from Sen. Smith: “We must recognize that we’re not going to eliminate pollution overnight. It’s going to be a hard, long fight. It’s going to take a long time and a lot of sacrifice on the part of each one of us.” By happy coincidence, the essay contest topic fits perfectly with the subject matter of this special issue of Maine Policy Review on sustainability. We feature here …

Every living organism on Earth depends on water, many of which must consume liters of fresh water daily. Unfortunately, a readily available source of clean, fresh water is diminishing. Over the years, the fresh water supply has been polluted by biological and chemical sources. The nutrient levels and pesticide chemical contamination of several water locations in the Middle Georgia area were analyzed and monitored by chemistry majors at GC&SU over the past two years.

Human Impact On Karst: The Example Of Lusaka (Zambia), Jo De Waele, Roberto Follesa
International Journal of Speleology
Lusaka, the capital of Zambia with over 2,000,000 inhabitants, is built on an extensive plateau composed mainly of schists and dolomitic marbles, constituting a very important aquifer that provides the city with almost half of its drinking water needs. Recent demographic growth, leading to uncontrolled urban expansion, and mismanagement of the water resource and of urban waste has lead, in the past 20 years, to an overexploitation of the aquifer and to a generalised water quality depletion, putting in serious danger the future social and economical development of the capital. This third world city has, for these reasons, become a …
