Towards Robot Theatre, Marek Perkowski
Towards Robot Theatre, Marek Perkowski
Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series
The talk will present the idea of futuristic robot theatre and work done towards it at the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at PSU. After a short history of robot theatre from antiquity until 2008 we will present recent work on robot theatre in the world and at PSU, including two plays: ancient Korean folk tale "Hahoe Pylyshin" and "What's that? A Schroedinger Cat" or a debate between Einstein and Schroedinger Cat about quantum mechanics - an educational theatre. Several models of robot theatre will be discussed: animatronic theatre, interactive theatre and improvisational theatre. We will …
Random Graphs: From Paul Erdős To The Internet, Michał Karoński
Random Graphs: From Paul Erdős To The Internet, Michał Karoński
Dalrymple Lecture Series
Paul Erdős, one of the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century, was a champion of applications of probabilistic methods in many areas of mathematics, such as a graph theory, combinatorics and number theory. He also, almost fifty years ago, jointly with another great Hungarian mathematician Alfred Rényi, laid out foundation of the theory of random graphs: the theory which studies how large and complex systems evolve when randomness of the relations between their elements is incurred. In my talk I will sketch the long journey of this theory from the pioneering Erdős era to modern attempts to model properties of …

Water As A Complex System: Understanding The Dynamics In A Changing Environment, Heejun Chang
Water As A Complex System: Understanding The Dynamics In A Changing Environment, Heejun Chang
Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series
The water resources system is constantly evolving over space and time at a range of scales. Human-induced climate change and land development are probably two major driving forces of water resource system changes. However, the impacts of such changes are region specific, which depend on watershed characteristics such as topography and geology. Numerical simulation models are useful tools for understanding the system dynamics by allowing the multiple interactions of system components. I will introduce case studies of the Pacific Northwest that examine how changing climate and population growth affect regional water resources at multiple spatial and temporal scales and explain …

Tb202: Composition And Biomass Of Forest Floor Vegetation In Experimentally Acidified Paired Watersheds At The Bear Brook Watershed In Maine, Peter Kenlan, G. B. Wiersma, A. S. White, I. J. Fernandez
Technical Bulletins
The percentage cover (abundance), frequency of occurrence, biomass, species richness, and species diversity of understory herbs was measured on a paired watershed ecosystem in eastern Maine, USA. This paired watershed site (Bear Brook Watershed in Maine, BBWM) has had the West Bear Brook Watershed treated bi-monthly with granular ammonium sulfate at a rate of 28.8 kg S ha-1 yr-1 and 25.2 kg N ha-1 yr-1 since 1989. East Bear Brook Watershed serves as the reference site. More than 100 plots were randomly located across the two watersheds. The data suggest that there is generally a lower frequency of occurrence of …

Tailings Tale: Mike Horse Looms Dark Over The Blackfoot, Elizabeth L. Harrison
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
In the spring of 1975, a heavy rain blew out an earthen dam holding back toxic metal waste from the now defunct Mike Horse mine at the headwaters of the scenic Big Blackfoot River. Federal agencies, a corporate mining giant, and the small town community of Lincoln, Montana, grapple with the repercussions and future of the watershed.

Potential Role Of Micro-Algae On Global Energy Supply, Sage Callaway-Keeley, Stephanie Huynh
Potential Role Of Micro-Algae On Global Energy Supply, Sage Callaway-Keeley, Stephanie Huynh
Student Research Posters
The most effective ways to reduce CO2 emissions are to improve the energy efficiency of each economic sector and to reduce the cutting of tropical and temperate forests around the world. These options, however, may not fully reach their technical and economic potential due to various political and socioeconomic. The most practical of these is to increase CO2 sinks through photosynthesis in both standing tree biomass and in ocean primary producers. The use of marine algae as CO2 sinks is for large-scale CO2 mitigation: the use of phytoplankton through Fe fertilization and macro algal (kelp) farms, which can be used …

Biofuels: A Hands-On Approach, Learning The Potential Of Utilizing Non-Food Sources, Alexandra Ham, Gabrielle Pecora, Hoaithuong Bui, Timothy Camarella, Victor Pham, Marc Ting

The global energy economy is huge and thoughts of replacing large amounts of petroleum based fuels by massive levels of fermentation of grains are not realistic. On an energy basis what global agriculture produces for food will almost cover the energy demands if all of it is redirected to the production of fuels—either as alcohols for gasoline or as fat derivatives for diesel fuel. This means that chemical processes need to be developed that allow inclusion of non-food based agricultural and urban wastes as well as forest debris into the energy economy. These represent opportunities to capture new sources of …
