This award, provided by the Office of Polar Programs of the National Science Foundation, supports participation of a researcher from the University of Maine in an expedition of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE) to study beryllium enriched minerals in Enderby Land. Beryllium is a rare element in crustal rocks and enrichments are especially unusual in granulite-facies (high temperature and pressure, and relatively dry conditions) metamorphic rocks. This project focuses on unique beryllium-enriched pegmatites in the Archean ultra-high temperature (up to 1000 degrees C) granulite-facies Napier Complex in eastern Casey Bay, Enderby Land, East Antarctica. Carbon monoxide (CO) plays a major role in atmospheric chemistry. Through a series of reactions, CO can contribute to the formation of tropospheric ozone, which poses a serious health concern on a regional scale. While anthropogenic sources of CO are reasonably well understood, relatively little is known about natural CO sources and sinks. Wetlands have been discounted as CO sources on the basis of sediment CO concentrations. However, plant leaves and stems produce significant amounts of CO when illuminated by the sun. Because of their large amounts of plant biomass, wetlands are likely strong net CO sources. Our work will …

Greenhouse gas emissions are expected to increase mean global temperature by 3-5 C in the next 50-100 years. The consequences of this warming for primary ecosystem processes are not yet understood, and have become tile focus of an emergent field of ecological research. This project will bring together a multi-disciplinary, international group of scientists representing 22 soil/air warming sites from seven countries to synthesize the current knowledge on the effects of elevated temperature on terrestrial ecosystems. This theory project develops a position-space renormalization-group approach to study driven diffusive lattice gases; the theory will be modified and applied to interacting cases and systems with quenched randomness. Systems driven far from equilibrium are prevalent in nature and particularly challenging with respect to fundamental understanding and property prediction. The models to be studied in this project are simple prototypes related to a variety of complex systems such as biological populations, binary fluid flow through random media, and fast ionic conductors. The aims of this research are to continue treatment and monitoring of a paired watershed experiment at Bear Brook in northern Maine, with an emphasis on changes in soil base cations, particularly calcium. Base cation depletion is well-recognised as a potential problem in soils that have been subjected to acidic N deposition but few data exist from well-controlled, long-term experiments. The Bear Brook watershed has been periodically treated with ammonium sulfate since the fall of 1989 and is believed to be approaching N saturation. The goal of this project was to delevop a technique for selecting information to volunteer in problem solving dialogues. The technique was to create usefulness ratings for information based on the problem solving of the agent that may communicate the information. Heuristics translate specific problem solving activities into contributions to the overall usefulness rating for the information. To this end, our objectives included determining the type of information that should be included in dialogues and implementing heuristics.

This award is for support for a program of research involving the use of inverse modeling to derive information from the measured configuration of an ice sheet to yield important information about the conditions both at the bed and within the ice column. It is proposed to convert a column-averaged model to a column- integrated model that accounts explicitly for internal thermodynamics and variations of material properties that depend on this internal temperature field. An existing finite-element 3- D temperature solver will be coupled with an existing finite- element map-plane continuity solver. The result will allow more detailed analysis of …
