Dynamics Of Density Cavities Generated By Frictional Heating: Formation, Distortion, And Instability, M. D. Zettergren, J. L. Semeter, H. Dahlgren Dec 2015

Dynamics Of Density Cavities Generated By Frictional Heating: Formation, Distortion, And Instability, M. D. Zettergren, J. L. Semeter, H. Dahlgren

Publications

A simulation study of the generation and evolution of mesoscale density cavities in the polar ionosphere is conducted using a time-dependent, nonlinear, quasi-electrostatic model. The model demonstrates that density cavities, generated by frictional heating, can form in as little as 90 s due to strong electric fields of ∼120 mV/m, which are sometimes observed near auroral zone and polar cap arcs. Asymmetric density cavity features and strong plasma density gradients perpendicular to the geomagnetic field are naturally generated as a consequence of the strong convection and finite extent of the auroral feature. The walls of the auroral density cavities are …

An Economic Regression Model To Predict Market Movements, Timothy A. Smith, Andrew Hawkins Dec 2015

An Economic Regression Model To Predict Market Movements, Timothy A. Smith, Andrew Hawkins

Publications

In finance, multiple linear regression models are frequently used to determine the value of an asset based on its underlying traits. We built a regression model to predict the value of the S&P 500 based on economic indicators of gross domestic product, money supply, produce price and consumer price indices. Correlation between the error in this regression model and the S&P’s volatility index (VIX) provides an efficient way to predict when large changes in the price of the S&P 500 may occur. As the true value of the S&P 500 deviates from the predicted value, obtained by the regression model, …

Gravitons To Photons--Attenuation Of Gravitational Waves, Preston Jones, Douglas Singleton Nov 2015

Gravitons To Photons--Attenuation Of Gravitational Waves, Preston Jones, Douglas Singleton

Publications

In this essay, we examine the response of an Unruh–DeWitt (UD) detector (a quantum two-level system) to a gravitational wave background. The spectrum of the UD detector is of the same form as some scattering processes or three body decays such as muon-electron scattering or muon decay. Based on this similarity, we propose that the UD detector response implies a “decay” or attenuation of gravitons, G, into photons, γ, via G+G→γ+γ or G→γ+γ+G. Over large distances such a decay/attenuation may have consequences in regard to the detection of gravitational waves.

The Impact Of Solar Wind Ulf Bz Fluctuations On Geomagnetic Activity For Viscous Timescales During Strongly Northward And Southward Imf, A. Osmane, A. P. Dimmock, R. Naderpour, T. I. Pulkkinen, K. Nykyri Nov 2015

The Impact Of Solar Wind Ulf Bz Fluctuations On Geomagnetic Activity For Viscous Timescales During Strongly Northward And Southward Imf, A. Osmane, A. P. Dimmock, R. Naderpour, T. I. Pulkkinen, K. Nykyri

Publications

We analyze more than 17 years of OMNI data to statistically quantify the impact of IMF Bz fluctuations on AL by using higher-order moments in the AL-distribution as a proxy. For strongly southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), the AL distribution function is characterized by a decrease of the skewness, a shift of its peak from −30 nT to −200 nT, and a broadening of the distribution core. During northward IMF, the distribution of AL is characterized by a significant reduction of the standard deviation and weight in the tail. Following this characterization of AL for southward and northward IMF, we …

Pattern Formation Of Elastic Waves And Energy Localization Due To Elastic Gratings, A. Berezovski, J. Engelbrecht, Mihhail Berezovski Oct 2015

Pattern Formation Of Elastic Waves And Energy Localization Due To Elastic Gratings, A. Berezovski, J. Engelbrecht, Mihhail Berezovski

Publications

Elastic wave propagation through diffraction gratings is studied numerically in the plane strain setting. The interaction of the waves with periodically ordered elastic inclusions leads to a self-imaging Talbot effect for the wavelength equal or close to the grating size. The energy localization is observed at the vicinity of inclusions in the case of elastic gratings. Such a localization is absent in the case of rigid gratings.

Ionospheric Response To Infrasonic-Acoustic Waves Generated By Natural Hazard Events, M. D. Zettergren, J. B. Snively Sep 2015

Ionospheric Response To Infrasonic-Acoustic Waves Generated By Natural Hazard Events, M. D. Zettergren, J. B. Snively

Publications

"Recent measurements of GPS-derived total electron content (TEC) reveal acoustic wave periods of ∼1–4 min in the F region ionosphere following natural hazard events, such as earthquakes, severe weather, and volcanoes. Here we simulate the ionospheric responses to infrasonic-acoustic waves, generated by vertical accelerations at the Earth’s surface or within the lower atmosphere, using a compressible atmospheric dynamics model to perturb a multifluid ionospheric model. Response dependencies on wave source geometry and spectrum are investigated at middle, low, and equatorial latitudes. Results suggest constraints on wave amplitudes that are consistent with observations and that provide insight on the geographical variability …

Testing Lorentz Symmetry With Planetary Orbital Dynamics, A. Hees, Q. G. Bailey, C. Le Poncin-Lafitte, A. Bourgoin, A. Rivoldini, B. Lamine, F. Meynadier, C. Guerlin, P. Wolf Sep 2015

Testing Lorentz Symmetry With Planetary Orbital Dynamics, A. Hees, Q. G. Bailey, C. Le Poncin-Lafitte, A. Bourgoin, A. Rivoldini, B. Lamine, F. Meynadier, C. Guerlin, P. Wolf

Publications

Planetary ephemerides are a very powerful tool to constrain deviations from the theory of general relativity (GR) using orbital dynamics. The effective field theory framework called the Standard-Model Extension (SME) has been developed in order to systematically parametrize hypothetical violations of Lorentz symmetry (in the Standard Model and in the gravitational sector). In this communication, we use the latest determinations of the supplementary advances of the perihelia and of the nodes obtained by planetary ephemerides analysis to constrain SME coefficients from the pure gravity sector and also from gravity-matter couplings. Our results do not show any deviation from GR and …

Impact Of Declining Proposal Success Rates On Scientific Productivity, Ted Von Hippel, Priscilla Cushman, Todd Hoeksema, Chryssa Kouveliotou, James Lowenthal, Bradley Peterson, Keivan G. Stassun, Sep 2015

Impact Of Declining Proposal Success Rates On Scientific Productivity, Ted Von Hippel, Priscilla Cushman, Todd Hoeksema, Chryssa Kouveliotou, James Lowenthal, Bradley Peterson, Keivan G. Stassun,

Publications

Over the last decade proposal success rates in the fundamental sciences have dropped significantly. Astronomy and related fields funded by NASA and NSF are no exception. Data across agencies show that this is not principally the result of a decline in proposal merit (the proportion of proposals receiving high rankings is largely unchanged), nor of a shift in proposer demographics (seniority, gender, and institutional affiliation have all remained unchanged), nor of an increase (beyond inflation) in the average requested funding per proposal, nor of an increase in the number of proposals per investigator in any one year. Rather, the statistics …

Self-Accleration And Instability Of Gravity Wave Packets: 1. Effects Of Temporal Localization, David C. Fritts, Brian Laughman, Thomas S. Lund, Jonathan B. Snively Sep 2015

Self-Accleration And Instability Of Gravity Wave Packets: 1. Effects Of Temporal Localization, David C. Fritts, Brian Laughman, Thomas S. Lund, Jonathan B. Snively

Publications

"An anelastic numerical model is used to explore the dynamics accompanying the attainment of large amplitudes by gravity waves (GWs) that are localized in altitude and time. GW momentum transport induces mean flow variations accompanying a GW packet that grows exponentially with altitude, is localized in altitude, and induces significant GW phase speed, and phase, variations across the GW packet. These variations arise because the GW occupies the region undergoing accelerations, with the induced phase speed variations referred to as “self-acceleration.” Results presented here reveal that self-acceleration of a GW packet localized in time and altitude ultimately leads to stalling …

The Impact Of Climate Change On Select Ecosystems, Mary Snow, Richard Snow Sep 2015

The Impact Of Climate Change On Select Ecosystems, Mary Snow, Richard Snow

Publications

Terrestrial and marine environments are experiencing pronounced changes. As species and their ecosystems undergo rising temperatures, varying precipitation patterns and alterations in their chemistry and phenology, there is a great deal of added stress on many organisms. Many species attempting to adapt to a rapidly changing climate are forced to migrate or to become extinct. Forest communities are changing in composition as well as migrating northward. Often, roads, cities, and other forms of development physically impede migration. Some species are not able to migrate at the pace with which their ecosystems are warming. In some forest communities, southern boundaries are …

Gaise Into The Future: Updating A Landmark Report For An Increasingly Data-Centric World, Michelle Everson, Paul Velleman, Beverly Wood, John Gabrosek, Megan Mocko, Robert Carver

Publications

Ever since its official endorsement by the American Statistical Association in 2005, the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) College Report has had a profound impact on the teaching of statistics. Now, a decade later, it is important to recognize the changing nature in what and how we teach our introductory statistics students. Changes in technology and assessment practices, just over the past 10 years, have made it possible to do new and exciting things in our courses, in very different ways than were envisioned by the authors of the original GAISE College Report. Further, our world …

Two-Dimensional Structures In The Quintic Ginzburg-Landau Equation, Florent Bérard, Charles-Julien Vandamme, S.C. Mancas Aug 2015

Two-Dimensional Structures In The Quintic Ginzburg-Landau Equation, Florent Bérard, Charles-Julien Vandamme, S.C. Mancas

Publications

By using ZEUS cluster at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University we perform extensive numerical simulations based on a two-dimensional Fourier spectral method Fourier spatial discretization and an explicit scheme for time differencing) to find the range of existence of the spatiotemporal solitons of the two-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with cubic and quintic nonlinearities. We start from the parameters used by Akhmediev et. al. and slowly vary them one by one to determine the regimes where solitons exist as stable/unstable structures. We present eight classes of dissipative solitons from which six are known (stationary, pulsating, vortex spinning, filament, exploding, creeping) and two are …

The Aerospace Corporation's Nightglow Imager (ANI) observes nighttime OH emission (near 1.6 µm) every 2 s over an approximate 73¬∞ field of view. ANI had previously been used to study instability features seen over Maui. Here we describe observations of instabilities seen from 5 to 8 UT on 24 March 2012 over Cerro Pachon, Chile, and compare them with previous results from Maui, with theory, and with Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS). The atmosphere had reduced stability because of the large negative temperature gradients measured by a Na lidar. Thus, regions of dynamical and convective instabilities are expected to form, depending …

Formation Of Three-Dimensional Surface Waves On Deep-Water Using Elliptic Solutions Of Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation, Shahrdad G. Sajjadi, S.C. Mancas, Frederique Drullion Jul 2015

Formation Of Three-Dimensional Surface Waves On Deep-Water Using Elliptic Solutions Of Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation, Shahrdad G. Sajjadi, S.C. Mancas, Frederique Drullion

Publications

A review of three-dimensional waves on deep-water is presented. Three forms of three-dimensionality, namely oblique, forced and spontaneous types, are identified. An alternative formulation for these three-dimensional waves is given through cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The periodic solutions of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation are found using Weierstrass elliptic ℘ functions. It is shown that the classification of solutions depends on the boundary conditions, wavenumber and frequency. For certain parameters, Weierstrass ℘ functions are reduced to periodic, hyperbolic or Jacobi elliptic functions. It is demonstrated that some of these solutions do not have any physical significance. An analytical solution of …

A Meteorological Analysis Of The 2013 Alberta Flood: Antecendent Large-Scale Flow Pattern And Synoptic-Dynamic Characteristics, Shawn M. Milrad, John R. Gyakum, Eyad H. Atallah Jul 2015

A Meteorological Analysis Of The 2013 Alberta Flood: Antecendent Large-Scale Flow Pattern And Synoptic-Dynamic Characteristics, Shawn M. Milrad, John R. Gyakum, Eyad H. Atallah

Publications

The 19–21 June 2013 Alberta flood was the costliest (CAD $6 billion) natural disaster in Canadian history. The flood was caused by a combination of above-normal spring snowmelt in the Canadian Rockies, large antecedent precipitation, and an extreme rainfall event on 19–21 June that produced rainfall totals of 76 mm in Calgary and 91 mm in the foothills. As is typical of flash floods along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, rapidly rising streamflow proceeded to move downhill (eastward) into Calgary.

A meteorological analysis traces an antecedent Rossby wave train across the North Pacific Ocean, starting with intense baroclinic …

Gravity Wave Propagation Through A Vertically And Horizontally Inhomogeneous Background Wind, C. J. Heale, J. B. Snively Jun 2015

Gravity Wave Propagation Through A Vertically And Horizontally Inhomogeneous Background Wind, C. J. Heale, J. B. Snively

Publications

"A combination of ray theory and 2-D time-dependent simulations is used to investigate the linear effects of a time-dependent, vertically, and horizontally inhomogeneous background horizontal wind field on the propagation, refraction, and reflection of small-scale gravity wave packets. Interactions between propagating waves of different scales are likely to be numerous and important. We find that a static medium-scale wave wind field of sufficient amplitude can channel and/or critical-level filter a small-scale wave or cause significant reflection, depending upon both waves' parameters. However, the inclusion of a time-dependent phase progression of the medium-scale wave can reduce energy loss through critical-level filtering …

Solar Wind Energy Input To The Magnetosheath And At The Magnetopause, T. I. Pulkkinen, A. P. Dimmock, A. Osmane, K. Nykyri Jun 2015

Solar Wind Energy Input To The Magnetosheath And At The Magnetopause, T. I. Pulkkinen, A. P. Dimmock, A. Osmane, K. Nykyri

Publications

Using Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions During Substorms observations, we show that the efficiency of the energy entry through the magnetopause as measured by the Poynting vector normal component depends on the combination of the solar wind speed and the southward component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF): Most efficient energy transfer occurs when the IMF BZ is only moderately negative, and the solar wind speed is high. This means that for the same level of solar wind driver parameters (electric field, epsilon, or other), different combinations of V and BZ will produce different driving at the magnetopause. …

Direct Atmospheric Evidence For The Irreversible Formation Of Aqueous Secondary Organic Aerosol, Marwa M. El-Sayed, Yingqing Wang, Christopher J. Hennigan Jun 2015

Direct Atmospheric Evidence For The Irreversible Formation Of Aqueous Secondary Organic Aerosol, Marwa M. El-Sayed, Yingqing Wang, Christopher J. Hennigan

Publications

The reversible nature of aqueous secondary organic aerosol (aqSOA) formation was characterized for the first time through direct atmospheric measurements. Water-soluble organic carbon in the gas and particle phases (WSOCg and WSOCp) was measured simultaneously to quantify aqSOA formation in Baltimore, Maryland. During the nighttime, aqSOA formation was evident as WSOCg increasingly partitioned to the particle phase with increasing relative humidity (RH). To characterize the reversible/irreversible nature of this aqSOA, the WSOCp measurement was alternated through an unperturbed ambient channel and through a “dried” channel maintained at ~40% RH (with 7 s residence time) to mimic the natural drying particles …

While a quantitative climate theory of tropical cyclone formation remains elusive, considerable progress has been made recently in our ability to simulate tropical cyclone climatologies and to understand the relationship between climate and tropical cyclone formation. Climate models are now able to simulate a realistic rate of global tropical cyclone formation, although simulation of the Atlantic tropical cyclone climatology remains challenging unless horizontal resolutions finer than 50 km are employed. This article summarizes published research from the idealized experiments of the Hurricane Working Group of U.S. Climate and Ocean: Variability, Predictability and Change (CLIVAR). Observer-Based Sliding Mode Control Of Rijke-Type Combustion Instability, Jaime Rubio-Hervas, Mahmut Reyhanoglu, William Mackunis Jun 2015

Observer-Based Sliding Mode Control Of Rijke-Type Combustion Instability, Jaime Rubio-Hervas, Mahmut Reyhanoglu, William Mackunis

Publications

Observer-based sliding mode control of combustion instability in a Rijke-type thermoacoustic system is considered. A commonly used thermoacoustic model with sensors and monopole-like actuators is linearized and formulated in a statespace form. It is assumed that the velocity or pressure sensor locations are chosen to assure the observability of the system. An observer-based sliding mode controller is then implemented to tune the actuators so that the system is asymptotically stable. The effectiveness of the controller is illustrated through a simulation example involving two modes and one sensor. The successful demonstration indicates that the observer-based feedback controller can be applied to …

Magnetic Flux Circulation In The Rotationally Driven Giant Magnetospheres, P. A. Delamere, A. Otto, X. Ma, F. Bagenal, R. J. Wilson Jun 2015

Magnetic Flux Circulation In The Rotationally Driven Giant Magnetospheres, P. A. Delamere, A. Otto, X. Ma, F. Bagenal, R. J. Wilson

Publications

The giant‐planet magnetodiscs are shaped by the radial transport of plasma originating in the inner magnetosphere. Magnetic flux transport is a key aspect of the stretched magnetic field configuration of the magnetodisc. While net mass transport is outward (ultimately lost to the solar wind), magnetic flux conservation requires a balanced two‐way transport process. Magnetic reconnection is a critical aspect of the balanced flux transport. We present a comprehensive analysis of current sheet crossings in Saturn's magnetosphere using Cassini magnetometer data from 2004 to 2012 in an attempt to quantify the circulation of magnetic flux, emphasizing local time dependence. A key …

Barotropic Frw Cosmologies With Chiellini Damping In Comoving Time, Haret C. Rosu, S.C. Mancas, Pisin Chen

Publications

For nonzero cosmological constant Λ, we show that the barotropic FRW cosmologies as worked out in the comoving time lead in the radiation-dominated case to scale factors of identical form as for the Chiellini dissipative scale factors in conformal time obtained recently by us in Phys. Lett. A 379, 882 (2015). This is due to the Ermakov equation which is obtained in this case. For zero cosmological constant, several textbook solutions are easily obtained as particular cases of our formulas and hypergeometric solutions are also reminded.

A Statistical Study Of The Dawn-Dusk Asymmetry Of Ion Temperature Anistrophy And Mirror Mode Occurrence In The Terrestrial Dayside Magnetosheath Using Themis Data, A. P. Dimmock, A. Osmane, T. I. Pulkkinen, K. Nykyri Jun 2015

Nykyri

Publications

We present a statistical study of ion temperature anisotropy and mirror mode activity in the Earth's dayside magnetosheath using 6 years of Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) observations focusing on the quantification of dawn-dusk asymmetry as a function of upstream conditions and distance from the magnetopause. Our statistical data show a pronounced dusk favored asymmetry of T⊥/T∥ which drives a similar asymmetry of mirror mode activity. T⊥/T∥ decreases with increasing solar wind Alfvén Mach number, whereas mirror mode occurrence increases. In both cases, the relative asymmetry between the dawn and dusk flanks decrease with increasing …

Integrable Equations With Ermakov-Pinney Nonlinearities And Chiellini Damping, S.C. Mancas, Haret C. Rosu May 2015

Integrable Equations With Ermakov-Pinney Nonlinearities And Chiellini Damping, S.C. Mancas, Haret C. Rosu

Publications

We introduce a special type of dissipative Ermakov–Pinney equations of the form v_ζζ+g(v)v_ζ+h(v)=0, where h(v)=h_0(v)+cv^{-3} and the nonlinear dissipation g(v) is based on the corresponding Chiellini integrable Abel equation. When h_0(v) is a linear function, h_0(v)=λ^2v, general solutions are obtained following the Abel equation route. Based on particular solutions, we also provide general solutions containing a factor with the phase of the Milne type. In addition, the same kinds of general solutions are constructed for the cases of higher-order Reid nonlinearities. The Chiellini dissipative function is actually a dissipation-gain function because it can be negative on some intervals. We also …

Lower Thermospheric Response To Atmospheric Gravity Waves Induced By The 2011 Tohoku Tsunami, Yonghui Yu, Zhiyu Yan, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D. May 2015

Lower Thermospheric Response To Atmospheric Gravity Waves Induced By The 2011 Tohoku Tsunami, Yonghui Yu, Zhiyu Yan, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D.

Publications

Previous GPS observations have revealed that while ionospheric TIDs were seen propagating in all directions away from the 2011 Tohoku earthquake epicenter, the total electron content (TEC) fluctuations associated with the subsequent tsunami were largest for waves propagating toward the northwest of the epicenter. Ionospheric motions observed approximately 10min after the earthquake were attributed to fast acoustic waves directly produced by the earthquake. Waves that first appeared about 40 min after the tsunami onset in TEC measurements were attributed to atmospheric gravity waves. In this paper, we conjecture that the remarkably different responses observed for the eastward and westward propagating …

Barotropic Frw Cosmologies With Chiellini Damping, Haret C. Rosu, S.C. Mancas, Pisin Chen

Publications

It is known that barotropic FRW equations written in the conformal time variable can be reduced to simple linear equations for an exponential function involving the conformal Hubble rate. Here, we show that an interesting class of barotropic universes can be obtained in the linear limit of a special type of nonlinear dissipative Ermakov–Pinney equations with the nonlinear dissipation built from Chiellini's integrability condition. These cosmologies, which evolutionary are similar to the standard ones, correspond to barotropic fluids with adiabatic indices rescaled by a particular factor and have amplitudes of the scale factors inverse proportional to the adiabatic index.

Developing A Bilingual, Computer-Tailored, Hpv Vaccination Promotion Intervention Targeting Latino Parents, Angela Chia-Chen Chen, Ashish Amresh

Publications

In this paper we present an innovative, computer-tailored application aimed at increasing Latino parents' intention to vaccinate their adolescent children against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). HPV infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. Latinas have the highest age-adjusted incidence rate for HPV-associated cervical cancer compared with their counterparts in other racial/ethnic groups. HPV vaccines offer hope against HPV-associated diseases. Because parental consent is required for children under age 18 to receive t h e HPV vaccination in most U. S. states, parents' attitudes and intention to have their children vaccinated are keys for promoting HPV …

Interactive Cause And Effect Comic-Book Storytelling For Improving Nutrition Outcomes In Children, Ashish Amresh, Madhumita Sinha, Rebecca Birr, Rahul Salla

Publications

Obesity among children and adolescents is increasingly becoming a major public health problem. Poverty and lower socio-economic status as well as lack of parental awareness regarding a balanced diet and adequate exercise all contribute towards childhood obesity. Unfortunately minority children have been especially vulnerable, among them inner-city Latino children continue to have the highest incidence rates of overweight and obesity; hence targeted intervention for this population group is of paramount importance. Access and affordability of smartphones and mobile internet devices provide an opportunity to create nutrition education interventions that can significantly impact and change attitude and knowledge regarding healthy diet …
