The phenomenon of magnetic nonequivalence has been growing in recent years. Unequal populations of the various conformers in such molecules are normally accepted as the cause of nonequivalence, but nuclei which are stereochemically nonequivalent are not necessarily magnetically nonequivalent. This nonequivalence has been demonstrated for molecules of the type ABDC⁸CHR₁R₂, where R + H, F, and Me. Although in principle the effect is quite general this has not been previously observed in "freely rotating" systems for groups larger than methyl. The heat of polymerization (∆H_p) of α-methylstyrene (AMS) has been a source of study for many years. The structure of AMS is shown in Figure 1.

The first quantitative work was done by Roberts and Jessup.¹ Their values were more positive than those theoretically calculated by Flory² and compared with ∆H_p data of other systems. This was not totally unexpected and could be satisfactorily explained on the basis of steric hindrance and loss of resonance energy of conjugation. Using three series of alcohols, benzyl alcohols, norbornanols and substituted naphthalene alcohols, it was hoped that some meaningful data could be presented to help clarify and expand some of the theories on alcohol association. The techniques to be utilized were ir and nmr spectroscopies.

"The guidance personnel in a high school are often burdened with the duty of hand scheduling the student's courses. Using the computer as a sub-optimizing tool in the registration of students, however, can cut scheduling time dramatically and relieve the guidance department of an onerous chore. The technique described in this investigation uses a conflict matrix that schedules the student's request and keeps the class load level within the course sections. A study was conducted on the alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to determine the range and optimum growth concentrations of phosphate and nitrate. There are only a few species of algae for which this type of data is known. Inorganic nutritional data is basic to the understanding of the complexities of phytoplankton ecology and eutrophication.

The "plus" strain of this heterothallic alga was cultured in a TRIS-buffered inorganic medium with various concentrations of sodium phosphate and potassium nitrate and adjusted to a pH of 7.4. The axenic cultures were evaluated at the end of 6 days with a spectrophotometer, at a wavelength …

The hemoglobin of Tubifex tubifex is found in solution in the blood of the worm in cells as in vertebrates. The binding of oxygen to the hemoglobin can be followed spectrophotometrically. A peak of absorbtion at 540 nm is fairly constant under different condition, while a peak at 575 nm disappears from the spectrum when oxygen is removed. The hemoglobin contains heme, non-heme iron and protein.

Binding of oxygen to the hemoglobin was found to be dependent on the concentration of the hemoglobin, at low concentrations (4.16 x 10^-6 M), oxygen could not be removed from the hemoglobin. Only …

Polecat Creek is an occasionally intermittent stream which drains approximately 18,368 acres in eastern Coles County, Illinois. It travels 15.2 miles through cropland and a partially wooded valley before it enters the Embarrass River 3 miles upstream from Lake Charleston. The stream ranges from 0.5 foot to 5 feet deep at a normal water level, with an average depth of 16 inches. It averages 12 feet wide, with a range from 4 to 20 feet.

"Complexometric titrations of calcium, zinc and lead with polyaminocarboxylic acids: ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), 1,2-diaminocyclohexanetetraacetic acid (DCTA), ethyleneglycol-bis(2-aminoethylether)tetraacetic acid (EGTA) and tetraethylenepentamine (tetren) have been investigated and compared in the following organic solvents: methanol, dimethyl formamide, dimethyl sulfoxide and methyl ethyl ketone. Various end point detection methods have been used: direct visual titration with metallochromic indicators and instrumental detection by photometry, potentiometry (mercury electrode and lead ion selective electrode) and amperometry. "In these series of experiments, mixtures of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide were irradiated in an absorption cell with monochromatic radiation found in the tropospheric region of the atmosphere. The irradiated mixtures were then introduced into a Wilson type cloud chamber to investigate the effects of these specific wavelength induced gas to particle conversions on nucleation. Results showed that sulfur dioxide could not be the sole agent for the formation of condensation nuclei. "The adsorption of dichromate ion with the surfactants, tetradecylpyridinium bromide and tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide at the air-solution interface was studied by surface tension and turbidity measurements in order to better understand the process of ion flotation. Surface tension measurements were used to study the effect of dichromate ion concentration on precipitation in dilute surfactant solutions. At higher concentration, near and above the cmc, light scattering was used to detect precipitation. The concentration of dichromate required to cause precipitation decreases with increasing surfactant concentration until the erne is approached, after which increasing concentrations of dichromate are required with increasing concentration of surfactant. …

Bolaform electrolytes are those which contain two or more charges separated by an inert framework. These are intermediate in structure between simple electrolytes and polyelectrolytes. Since these are similar to both synthetic and biological electrolytes, this investigation has been undertaken to determine some of their properties in solution.

The sodium and magnesium salts of ethane, propane, butane, pentane, hexane and decane α,ω-disulfonates were prepared. Each acid was prepared by refluxing the α,ω-dibromide of the desired salt with sodium sulfite. The sodium and magnesium salts were prepared by ion-exchange techniques.

A kinetic and equilibrium study of the reaction of triphenylphosphine (PPh₃) with pentacarbonylaminetungsten (O) [(CO)₅WNH₂C₆H₅] has been reported previously. Equilibrium constants for the reaction (CO)₅WNH₂C₆H₅ + PPh₃ = (CO)₅W[P(C₆H₅)₃] + C₆H₅NH₂ in toluene were reported to be 17.1, 49.2 and 65.7 respectively. In addition, the entropy change (ΔS) for the reaction was found to be 86±5 cal mol^-1 deg^-1.
